First time out of the vault

Hey guys
I played Fallout way back when, I think I bought them from a Virgin Mega Store.
Anyway, they really did make an impression on me back then and I've certainly played most of them past version 1 and 2 (NV was probably my favourite of the 3D versions)
It's been so long since I played the original ones and I can't remember too much about them. Can anyone help with couple of questions I have:
1. Fallout 1 was quite disappointing to me as I remember that it has an internal clock that counts down to the game ending... you either have the GECK or you don't which was something that hit me hard since I carefully progressed through the game inch by inch rather than rushing it to find I would never make it.. I might have cheated to see the other ending (I can't remember)... Anyway, I seem to remember Fallout 2 not having a timer, is this right?
2. I read a comment on steam (actually this is how I found this website; someone linked it), they mentioned that the Steam version has been butchered with content filtering (I imagine gore has been removed or something).. is this correct? Reading around on here there seems to be some restoration mod or something, can anyone explain the differences/benefits of this. I played the original Interplay versions back in the day.
3. Is there any places you could recommend buying fallout 1 or 2 from? I have already got the original CD's but they don't really work that well on DosBox or Windows 10 (I had some issues and I'd rather just rebuy them to run nicely with Windows 10 than have to start messing about too much to be honest)
4. Anything I should watchout for (or anything of interest) for revisiting a playthrough on Fallout 1 or 2?
Many thanks
