It's kinda like an avatar, as far as I understand it. But it depends on the individual how serious they take it. For some it is not more than a nick name and some image. Where as some people, really take it as representation of their personality. Up to the point where they take offense if you do something with their image/name.
I can see the appeal of it, as far as role playing goes, because it can be fun, I guess. But just like everything, it can be taken to far. However, as long people don't hurt anyone, I think everyone should do what makes him happy.

I don't get why they're called "furries" though, I just always called them anthro. I figured "furries" was only when people dress up and get fursona's only for RP purposes. Did furries hijack anthro?

From whatbi understand yeah.
I love rule34 as well. I can find some pretty obscure characters there but sometimes I get curious and the kid inside me suffers for it.
