G.E.C.K....

Just a little too complex a technology for a setting where they use vacuum tubes instead of integrated circuits, don't you think?

But how, then, are the monomers found/formed?

I missed this question the first time.. heh. You wouldn't really need a lot of monomers for this, because as I said, we're talking about ultra-light weight fabrication. A heavy bag of them might be enough to make a whole town, and that can be contained within the case itself.

i'm sure i read somwhere that the geck contained all the neccesary things in creating and maintaining a city/civilisation, rather than push a button and hey presto.
but you shouldnt really question things like that. not everything has to make sense. otherwise thered be to many things to question.

The Matrix is a class movie and i dont see how anyone cant like it, yea I know this i off topic but hey!

About the GECK i think that "Results may vary" as it says on the Fallout 2 movie. :D

But wouldn't the monomers still take up a lot of space?

From my own memory of making a polymer (nylon, I think it was) out of a glass filled with a liquid monomer, the monomer didn't take up less space than the polymer.

The monomers might be very light, but they'd still have to be contained in some kind of huge vessel...

IMHO the whole idea of G.E.C.K. is stupid and unconvincing. But since they decided to put it in, it's up to us fans to figure out an explanation that makes at least some sense. Or not. :P

The ultra-light polymer materials we have today allow us to make 10cm cubes that weigh less than a gram, and can bare loads similar to steel. They have an extremely low density, but they're very, very hard. That's what I'm talking about and they're a good deal different from nylon, to say the least.

Monomers can be packed densely, so that you have several grams of monomers taking up a cubic centimeter.
