Game reactor interviews Todd Howard

Why am I also starting to get the felling that outisde of D.C., Megaton seems to be the only town. Have they mentioned any other places besides Megaton?

It's been showing up a lot because it's pretty much the only one that the 30-min previewers could comfortably reach. Those who had more time got to Arefu for instance.

It's been my experience that Bethesda utilizes a strange definition of the word "town". Where most people use it as a substitute for "densely populated area of considerable extent", BethSoft uses its rather ancient jRPG connotation best defined as "a small number of largely uninhabitable buildings (Shops'N'Inns) and about a dozen or two NPCs roaming around, mostly purposelessly or with the sole purpose of giving the main character yet another generic quest".

In that sense, yes, there are other towns out there besides Megaton.

has anyone in any of the previews so far, killed a main quest related NPC?

I know they "aren't supposed to talk to them" or about them, but unless someone is literally watching their every move, (from this interview it sounds like they interacted with them regardless of the "rules") someone has to have run into one of those NPCs who's little tidbit of informative dialogue has to do with a meaningful step in the "main plot"..

Considering the large number of previewers who pretty much just killed and looted everything in sight for a half hour, I would expect one of them to have shot down an unkillable NPC who magically got back up a few minutes later..

Strangely enough I haven't seen any mention in any preview of someone doing that.

well... interviewer is really a retard. He asks on purpose about things that really arent the real topics and tries to make some pressure to todd... When he says "Well release date is ....p alahpal" "We havent yet gave a date " "uh sorry" is really retarded... he even isnt sorry, just satisfied with getting that creepy answer... fuck him.

I didn't see all that 'squirming', but I thought I noticed him wanting to giggle every time the interviewer pronounced words with his native 'rules', such as WATS instead of VATS. Plus if you ask a question that is specifically 'not on the table' to be asked it can lead to an awkward moment.
Yeah, well it did sound like the interviewer said "the WHAT system". If only it were called W.Ä.T.S., Benke probably would've nailed the pronunciation.

Anyway, Todd's beady eyes and constant nervous, shifty glances make his interviews really uncomfortable to watch. Best part of the vid: "You're not supposed to talk to him, that's off limits." [creepy half-smile at the camera]

He makes up for it by wearing that Captain America t-shirt.

I thought that maybe the interviewer was privvy to information that Bethesda has yet to release. For instance the release date listed on Amazon.com is October 7 and I know they like to jump the gun on that kind of stuff, but they've been having that listed date for months now.

I think they should've cut the scene with Moriarty mentioned out of the video. It's just bad manners to talk about stuff that you're not supposed to.

The European market will be probably a bit tougher for Fallout 3 than the US. The journalists here seem to be more eager to ask tough questions, write more critical previews and generally be more of a journalist than a hype making machine.

Yeah, that was the odd part, leaving that in the final edit. Like he wanted to flaunt the fact that he brought up a subject he'd been asked not to go into.

What Bethesda is doing with regards to the main story is about the only thing I can commend them on with their previews. Unless the main story is so absolutely thin that there is nothing more to be said about it, I'm glad that they're keeping that aspect under wraps. Even if I hate the combat, at least there might be a worthwhile plot to follow that hasn't been spoiled already.

I don't think that the reason that they want to keep the story under wraps is because it's thin (although it could be).

Konami forbid anybody to talk about ANY story elements (hell, people couldn't even talk about cut-scene length) in their previews of MGS4.

Even in the advance reviews these things couldn't be talked about.

Probably Beth just wants to keep their storyline under wraps and not have it spoiled ahead of time.

That's what I'm hoping for as well. Even if I can't stand what they've done to the combat system all can be redeemed if there is a great story to be experienced. Am I confident that Bethesda can deliver? No, but I do still have some glimmer of hope left that they'll surprise me and surpass my fairly low expecatations.

No, it's not. It's the duty of a good interviewer to get more out of the interviewee than he/she initially wanted to give away. That way the interviewer might just be able to add something new to what we already know from a gazillion other interviews.

Hey, maybe that's because they are bad mannered and actually dare to talk about stuff they're not supposed to ask???

That was the best part of the interview. I don't understand why you are so pissed? are you a big fan of Todd or something of the sort? :/

I love those awkward moments

p.s.

I giggled when he said "Asheave" (achieve) :P
the guy also like to say "how do you feel about that?" when he doesn't know how to properly end the question.
He needed to prepare better, but like said he looks stoned completely :)

Because it seems like the things that are off limits are things that pertain to the RPG aspects of the game.

It's like they don't want any mention of how the dialogue system works.

The FPS aspects of the game are the centre of attention, and anything that digs into the RPG side of things seems "off limits".

Honestly, I don't find that too surprising. Given that they're targeting two main groups - FPS console kiddies, and Fallout/RPG fans, they only run a risk of alienating either group by focusing on it at all.

The first group is largely illiterate, and the ones that aren't might only be familiar with JRPGs - which are little more than novels intermixed with grind. It would make sense to try and lure these people in with promises of excellent combat, and trust that they'll actually like the RPG elements when they encounter them.

As for the latter group... given how hostile and suspicious all of us are (with good reasons which I need not go into) there's little that could be said to convince us, short of actually playing the game ourselves and liking it.

Or maybe I'm over thinking things, and the dialogue's just crap; Bethesda's hoping to pull the same scam they did with Oblivion.

What irked me about this video (aside from the two creepy guys on the screen) was Todd's idea of humour. Fallout's never struck me as a comedic game - sure, there's the occasional grin, or bark of laughter, but it's always burnt with an edge of bitterness. It's closer to the bitter chuckle I utter when my car blows up in the middle of nowhere, than it is to the wackiness you'd find in a Monty Python movie.

I mean, c'mon, teddy bear launcher? They're making the fat-boy look respectable.

Yeah they don't "get" the Fallout humor at all.

Nor do they "get" the 50's Retro-future idea either. Greasers IN a fucking vault? I think they took the 50's thing literally.

Speaking of which. Has any screenshot of buildings looked anything like the style of the buildings from Fallout? I don't recall seeing any of the enormous heads on the corners of the buildings or anything.

Bethesda should have made a demo version of the game, then all elements of gameplay could be discussed freely. It's fucked up that everything is so sanitised.
