Gamers heart Japan

A 1 hour gaming special from a Canadian gaming show that tries to help generate donation for the Japan earthquake/tsunami.

What's amazing is that a lot of big shots are interviewed. A lot of big names I've heard over the years are on camera. It's pretty special to see all these guys in one video.

It's interesting to hear Sid likes to play Gran Turismo.

So much garbage! I mean sure, they have had a huge influence on the VIDEO game industry, but most of the stuff that comes out today is pure garbage. And I was always more of a pc gamer.

Yeah, I mean if people are happy paying $50 for Dragon Age 2, or $60 for Black Ops, I'm sure a few of them won't mind donating a couple of bucks for a 'good cause'. Looking forward to watching that video. :ok:

And as far as helping Japan goes, it is probably the best common goal for global gamers, simply because they've been so influential to gaming, as sea already mentioned. Don't think 'Gamers heart New Orleans' would go as well, for example.

How effective these (any?) charities are is a whole other question - a debate best left for another occasion?

thats true. A lot of the influence came from the japanese market. I don't even remember how many capcom I played in the past. Or from Squaresoft. Or the other big companies. I mean if Resident Evil or Secret of Mana had no influence on the market then I don't know what.

Nice one. Very nice.
When I think about it, good part of my childhood has been spent on video games, and most of them were Japanese.

I've given a lot to this relief effort, as I have many friends in Japan who were affected by this, and Japan was my home for a long time.

As for the Japanese contribution to the gaming industry, there would be absolutely no home console market today without the Japanese. After Atari caused the crash, it was the NES that brought back console gaming.

Also, Miyamoto is probably one of the greatest game designers of all time, and we've all played (and enjoyed) his games here, regardless of how PC-centric we are.

...but I think you grossly underestimate just how much influence titles like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, have had on both Western RPGs and games as a whole, both mechanically and narratively.

Holly crap, I'm really old, I played every one of them when they were launched!
Lots and lots of afternoons beating Donkey Kong in the arcade.

I'm a PC Gamer, but sea is right: without the japanese titles, games wouldn't be what they are today.

There's a huge amount of TF2 gamers who've bought the special items pack for Japan. Ranges from 2 euros to 30 euros.

And i've seen quite a few with the full pack. Impressive.

I think this has less to do with good intentions and more to do with the fact that Hat Fortress is all about hats.
Yeah, and other people donate to charities for the tax deduction.

As long as people get the help they need, who cares about whether or not someone donated to get a small thing in return.

I hope everything goes well for Japan and they rebuild their great society...

As for the video, I liked how the developers enjoyed Super Mario 64 so much...I never understood why the industry generally looks at Ocarina of time to be so revolutionary when it was just expanding on the engine and concepts brought about by Super Mario 64...

Both are great games though...I just think SM64 was more revolutionary in terms of what it did for gaming in general compared to Ocarina of Time...

Regardless, I hope this project gets more people to donate...that's always nice...
