GameSpot poll

If ya can't take the heat...ii.

I can take it, and withdraw my previous statement.

That same ignorance was mirrored on Gamespot.

I take great umbrage at that statement. though, sadly, many of our readers don't know much about it, most of our editors played and loved the first two games.

Need I remind you without places like NMA the general public wouldn't know shit about Van Buren or Bethesda's Fallout 3.

Hey, like I said before, I had great respect for this site until its members came after me with a meat cleaver for a humorous poll which they falsely thought was targeting them personally.

Without our fanatical rage we'd probably be reading previews for Fallout Tactics 5 on Xbox 360 and Fallout Dune Buggy Racing on Wii.

Now there's a horrifying thought...

Back up the manure spreader. Again, I never said I don't like turn-based RPGs. Nor did I say that it would be bad for Fallout 3 to be turn-based. KOTOR was great, so that sort of thing can be done. Nowadays well.
Are you actually suggesting that KOTOR's combat system was both good and turn-based?
'Cause, you know, it wasn't turn-based. At all.
See this article on the Codex and this page.

In the best of all possible worlds, there would be both a turn-based Fallout and a "Oblivion with Guns" game. However, considering that the series was basically dead under Interplay and Oblivion was a fantastic game, I'll take the latter over nothing any day.
I won't, and most of 'us' wouldn't either. I'd rather have no new Fallout game than a Fallout 'sequel' that doesn't actually fit Fallout's design.

Also, please don't double post. The Edit button exists for a reason.

As I read through this topic, I wondered why everyone was jumping on thor. He seemed like a reasonable enough guy.

Then I realized that I should actually take a look at the oh-so-controversial poll.

I don't believe for a second that his intentions were pure, or that he was simply being facetious. That poll was loaded in every sense of the word. I don't think he was attacking NMA specifically, but he was almost assuredly attacking everyone that's expressed concern over "Oblivion with Guns".

For the billionth time, it was a joke and if you can't take one then to hell with ya.

Second, if you want me to answer your accusations/assuage your fears on the air during next week's taping of the HotSpot podcast, send an e-mail to hotspot@gamespot.com or leave a voicemail at 877-506-8324 and I'll address it personally on air. I've issued plenty of posts and its obvious answering any more isn't gonna change any minds.

Tor, you haven't satisfactory answered why one poll option was barbed, while the others were not. The situation would have been much different if the Oblivion option was snarky as well. And I'm sorry, but "It was just a joke" does not sound all that good (pay attention to that last sentence).

Will you say anything different on the HotSpot? I do hope you are fair about it if it comes up, as it does provide you with an unequal platform.

I can't understand what enjoying Oblivion has to do with Fallout 3.
As Biosafreak perfrectly says in his blog, I've also enjoyed a whole lot of games but I don't want Fallout turning into one of them. What would you think of a Settlers II with guns and Mutants? Or maybe Pro Evolution Soccer with guns and mutants?

Hell they can make an Oblivion with guns, I don't care, as long as its not named Fallout.

As for the poll, well it's one of the typical ones in Gamespot. It has a little flavour of "one-sided" but since I am used to the Gamespot polls I can't say it was that big of a deal. Most people that actually answer to these polls are console-gamers anyway.

Y'all is getting way too bogged down on the poll, especially considering its hilarious (or disappointing) results.

I'm still more woried about what is going on with the many that are looking forward to Oblivion with Guns, and what happened to them that they can't reach their keyboards and express that opinion. Are they ill?

Nice link! Tell me more of this "forum jargon." I am intrigued, sir. (Pulls out pipe, dons smoking jacket.)

Oh, is that what this place is? An equal platform where you guys edit my comments and put words in my mouth, and don't acknowledge my points? I made that suggestion in the hopes that if you heard me actually speak you might--might--see that I am not pushing any agenda. Of course, given your mindset, it more likely to be like convincing Pat Robertson that the theory of evolution is valid or convincing a dog with anal puritis not to drag his ass on the carpet.

Really, everything you do is dodging questions while you keep yelling "I'm innocent, I'm innocent".
Why the fuck won't you answer why was there only one "loaded" option in that poll?

I don't see much use for you posting here if you are unable to answer some simple questions.

Are we being unfair? I'm not the one ignoring the fact that my own site's forums are filled with people saying they're afraid of Oblivion with Guns, then posting many are looking forward to Oblivion with Guns in my own newspost, thus ignoring not only a big part of the reaction to Fallout 3, but ignoring my own forum. Talk about being unfair, I don't think gamespot users are very happy, Tor, considering their reaction. If you're not pushing an agenda, Tor, how about you acknowledge the opinion of the people posting on the Gamespot Fallout 3 forum in your next newspost?

Also, the edit is a wordfilter. I know it's really annoying, and I've considered removing it, but don't claim we "edit your comments", we never edit what people say in posts, ever.

'Cept in the case of illegal linkage, or forum-breaking images and the like.

he is pretty liberal with the accusation hurling, isn't he?

I also like that he wants to placate you guys by answering you on podcast. IE a one-way, irrefutable on your side, statement from a position of authority (aka the purveyor of said podcast).

Thorsen, do you accept that not everyone thought was Oblivion was a fantastic game? That there's more there to criticize than the skill system? It seems like that's the fundamental disconnect we (I use this "we" loosely as Fallout fans come in all shapes/sizes, contrary to what you think) seem to have with the more mainstream audience/"press". And, to me, probably the most grating thing about this instant need to applaud BethSoft simply for picking up a license and running with it. Fallout and Oblivion are fundamentally very different games. In Fallout you have memorable characters, fun open dialog and most importantly options. Your game experience will vary differently from the next guy's from start to finish. Maybe I save Broken Hills, maybe you didn't, etc. In Oblivion you're stuck point A to Point B. Solving quests in pretty much the same way throughout (go clear out generic dungeon #467) and not being able to exert any influence in the outcome of the story. It's not a rewarding experience.

So for us to have this instant hesitation to not jump for joy that BethSoft is developing Fallout 3, it really shouldn't be so jarring or unbelievable to you (the mainstream) guys. Going off BethSoft's track record they haven't really pushed great dialog, dynamic story outcomes, memorable characters or any of the things that made Fallout memorable to most of us. They make pretty, open ended (only in the fact that you can follow this set of rails instead of that set of rails first), medieval versions of GTA with shitty vehicle physics. (Horseback riding, FTL.)

Pod cast.

Gamespot pod cast?

Never heard of it.

Format: Talk radio or shock jock wanna-be? Rush or Stern?

Got a Posse, a buddy side kick, and a husky voiced babe?

Got a pretty face, then future talking head. Maury Povich or Connie Chung?

Slight of hand, misdirecting glibness, blame shifting between victim and bully to create the instant authority, eternal righteousness, of a pan dimensional know it all. ... Tough GIG!

Consider exploiting the 'old boy network'. Fluff that resume with PR credits from a rising gaming house.
Be at ground zero --- if / when --- ZeniMax goes public ....
Score FO3 a 13 out of ten and win a platinum parachute for that cash flow with an earth escape trajectory.

Or stay in orbit with Howard on satellite radio!

Life is ALL good.

Polls on web pages tend to have attitude, then humor. More of a post to encourage scent marking, raw statistical poling. .... Poll-atics.

The web has stifled the print media, fewer high glossy scribblers.
The - many tubes - the many sources of information on the internet, threaten the presumed dominance of the professional web journalists. The news gate keepers.

I suggest to the NMA editorial staff that they consider sponsoring a seriously - teh funny- poll.
here and perhaps at other sites like, DAC and RPG Codex.

Where do game consumers go for credible reviews, the professional pay to play sites, or player reviews?

Pro's or peers?

Pod cast,

good way to diversify that resume ....
