General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

It's war son, the only relaxing those Terran bastards and the poncy guys in purple want is you relaxing your hold on freedom!

Uh yea, I played NC all the time in Planetside 1. :V

What a Coincidence, I am playing New Conglomerate too.

Giving a shot to Borderlands 2. Kind of disappointed thus far. I know, the writing in the first game wasn't exactly mature, and was very campy, but the new game is just ridiculously juvenile, it's something the 13-year-old son of my friends would giggle at. Guess they settled for a new target audience.

I also don't get why they'd wait 3 years to release something that's essentially a "slam dunk" sequel. The game looks, feels and plays like the first, and half the assets are the same. The "new" characters are basically the old 4 with reshuffled abilities and new models. I dunno, maybe it'll get better later on, but the first 2 hours or so weren't very good.

The toilet humor seems mostly limited to Claptrap. He ceases to become relevant once you get to Sanctuary, but then you have to deal with the utter bores that are Roland and Lilith. At the very least, I can appreciate an FPS that doesn't take itself too seriously, a rare thing in this age of terrorist, zombie and russian gung-ho shooting galleries.

And yeah, the beginning is underwhelming, but for me it picked up steam once you got to the area around Sanctuary. The guns are much more diverse and fun to use than before, my favourite thus far is a Tediore rocket launchet that turns into an actual rocket when it runs out of ammo in the clip. I also saw noticeable improvements in enemy animation and AI, and the game seems more difficult too. Plus, the robot enemies are really fun to fight. So I wouldn't say it's a slam dunk sequel so far. Then again, it might be because I'm playing as Salvadore, and dual wielding rocket launchers is a riot.

Maybe I should consider switching classes then, because I'm not too satisfied with Zero so far. Picked him cause he's the most similar to the BL1 Siren class, but it's just not the same. The combination of his love for sniper rifles with the special ability that heavily favors melee is also rather odd.

The Escapist reviewer had issues with Zero as well so he may be a bit of a dud.

Well, I'm sure he could be made into a decent melee build, but that's not what I want to play atm.

Started playing as the Commando instead, seems a bit more fun. The constant "Cool story bro!"-ing is absolutely @#@%ing annoying though. The writers for this game should be put against the concrete wall... and bashed repeatedly into it. And yeah, it's not just Claptrap toilet humor - he's actually not the worst offender. Jack is horribly written, and the AI lady is just bland and boring and I wish I could turn her off.

The game does feel a bit more challenging than the first, though I don't think it's due to the AI. Not in the large part anyway. AI does seem a bit better, but it's the fact that they gimp you from the get-go that makes the game harder. They throw you at more and tougher enemies at once without much of a learning curve; at the same time, it seems a lot more difficult to find decent guns early on. You also seem to start with much lower fire and reload speed than in BL1.

Mods dude. Lots of really great mods.

Dude, you must have 10 Luck if you managed to keep New Vegas working with mods. I logged 250 hours with it until it refused to work anymore. The game would just crash after choosing Play from the launcher. Back then I was using a slew of mods right from the start and suddenly the game ceased functioning.

Now after a hiatus and a new computer, I decided to fire up New Vegas again. It worked initially. As soon as I enabled mods, the familiar crash started happening right after the launcher. I've scoured the net for solutions and none of them solve the problem. The issue seems to be with Steam and its baleful tendrils clogging up fine games. There's nothing to worry, since I have a backlog of games to be played: Jagged Alliance, a new run in Baldur's Gate 2 after completing BG1 for the first time, Icewind Dale and Alpha Centauri.

10 Luck, or being smart enough to read the instructions to Either not install mutually conflicting mods, or to install them properly.

Or having a good PC.

Yeah this. I have 92 mods installed for Oblivion and it doesn't crash.

Morrowind. Like the rise and fall of the sun, so goes Morrowind on my computer. Every few years I install it and have a new adventure. For some reason this time I decided to be super hard on myself and it's been crazy fun. I decided to put some restraints on my character and give him a philosophy to make the game different and more interesting than a usual play through. I'm also playing the game on the hardest level which makes it very difficult. I've hit level 3 now and this is the most fun I've had playing this game in a long time.

I played Oblivion before playing Morrowind, and I've always found that game super boring. Is there a way to make it actually fun? I've heard how great it is and I just don't understand. It's like Oblivion except nothing is as good. :\

What do you find boring? I think it's great fun. The quests are awesome.

If you're interested there's a mod out there that replaces the Morrowind Engine with the Oblivion Engine. It's called Morroblivion.

Here's a comparison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRe1-KxJ4Fc.

People are also working on replacing it with the Skyrim Engine.

Can't say for sure. I just specifically remember the combination of free-play without scaling was annoying as hell (because there's no indication on which places will rape you, thus the beginning consisted of me wandering around getting killed by everything) but more important I spent several hours downloading all the Better Textures packs and whatnot (this was a few years before Morroblivion existed) and then I started playing and it didn't really suck me in at all. Nothing was amazing, nothing was impressive, it was just An Old Game With New Graphics.

Oblivion on the other hand, or any super-classic RPG pulls you in immediately. There's some kind of epic opening sequence, and you want to start out. Think FF3, Chrono Trigger, Fallout 1 & 2, etc. The music and movie intro of Oblivion are fucking amazing.

Just nothing in Morrowind ever jumped out and saiud HEY THIS IS AWESOME RIGHT? YOU SHOULD PLAY ME! like every other great game does.

My roommate can't play Mass Effect 1 now that he's played and beaten Mass Effect 2 because to him, literally everything about #2 is superior. Maybe I'm just having a similar experience?

Morrowind does not scale to your level. I actually prefer it that way along with most of the people at Codex. Man, it hurts my brain to see someone say Oblivion is better than Morrowind. Honestly. :seriouslyno:

I guess it would have been better if you played it when it first came out.
