Getting a dog

Boo give me a break. Small dogs can be cute too. They can't do a lot of useful stuff but they can still love you. And in a small space, they don't break as much.
 
I'm partial to not having a dog at all since I would rather kill myself than be forced to walk a dog thrice a day and pick up the poo and talk with it as if it could understand what I was saying and transform into a dog person that discusses the qualities of different breeds on internet forums - but that's me. Congratulations to your new life, DexterMorgan.
 
Come on, you can just admint that you couldn't afford dogfood and would be stricken with terror each night, being the most ready available source of dog nutrients for your pooch :)
 
I am very partial to dogs, although sadly, I do not have one at the moment, as my wife is not very partial to them.

My last two dogs were a female Doberman and a male Bulldog. Both fantastic dogs. Unfortunately, Bulldogs, like Boxers, have a rather short shelf life.

My best friend and I both owned Dobermans at the same time. Hers was a large male named Zeus. He was big, dumb, and dopey, and really liked to play. Samantha, my dog, was a much smaller female, and was very loyal and had a good temperament, although she was skittish around strangers. Both Zeus and Samantha were high maintenance dogs that craved constant attention. I would have to ban Sammy from the workshop, because she would inevitably bump my elbow for attention whenever I was in the middle of something.

I would not hesitate to get another Doberman, however, I will never crop a dog's ears or tail again. I watched it being done, and it disgusted me and looked like it hurt her. My own opinion, of course.

Johnny I LOVE your dogs, both awesome breeds. ^_^

I have a doberman and a dachsund myself, I'll post a picture or two if my doggies would stay still long enough for me to get a good picture. :P

Also Dexter your dog is very nice looking as well.
 
It looks like Zippo took a little more after the doberman side. And I see you use a prong training collar, I wish more people did, I hate seeing a dog with a choker collar.
 
Thinking about getting a dog

My dog died recently and coming home at night is not the same anymore. He was a very smart, obedient, loyal and a lot more then anyone could ask for in a dog. One time when I was younger my dad came home drunk and beat me, my dog shielded my body with his own. Actually, now that I think about it, I think I came home really drunk, did something stupid and thats why my dad beat me. Regardless, I am looking for suggestions as to what dog I might want to get. I was thinking about adopting a worthless mutt that would just chill in my room and growl at everybody while chewing on my law textbooks, but haven't made up my mind yet.
here are some basic requirements:

*intelligent
*Medium-Large size no more then 100lb
*Guard/Working class
*Does not Shed much/smooth coat
*good with kids
*not a Pit Bull or Rottweiler
*no price cap

Please include pictures and characteristic description of dogs you had positive experience with that fit the requirements.

@UFT Some breeds have better receptions then others and while each dog is different you can compare them to the rest of the litter. It also helps to meet the parents.

@x'il I do like Germen Shepherd's but they shed way too much.

I had a Boxer before but I don't feel like I'm trying to replace him. I was looking at some interesting boxer hybrids like the "boxerdoodle" but those tend to vary.

You haven't seen shedding until you've met my dog. Christ, when I brush the damn thing out my lawn is covered in it's fur.

You could go for a labradoodle, a poodle, a schnauzer, or like a wheaten terrier.
 
All dogs shed, that's a biological fact. If you pick one with short fur, it'll just mean it gets stuck diagonally in the carpet instead of plain sticking to it.

I'd recommend a Labrador, seems to fill in your reqs (a bit too large, maybe, though). My mother-in-law has a Labrador, and her daughter can do pretty much anything to the beast with impunity (ride, bite, generally perster). Forget about it guarding anything, though.

Awesome, intelligent, very aware, good alarm (not much of a fighter, though, just too short), good with kids and so damn cuute. Bloody fine to train, very obedient, only needs a daily walk.

Oh yeah, and they demand belly rubs.
 
i always flirted with the idea of having a dog, but i am at the uni most of the time and i don't think i can just leave the poor thing alone at home.
besides i am not sure how much a dog will cost me(food and stuff like that).
