Glittering Gems of Hatred, part III

After some delay, here is the (fairly short) third part of NMA's Glittering Gems of Hatred article. A few notes:

There's a text-info box in this part defining what the article means by "Fallout fans". This was written in response to just criticism that the article left this unnecessarily vague. It will be moved to part 1 (where it belongs) later on, but is added here now.

In response to the article, the word "manifesto" was dropped by both supporters and detractors. This is nonsense. It is not intended to be and obviously isn't a manifesto. The article serves two basic purposes: encouraging a wider audience to reconsider their opinion of the hardcore Fallout fans and urging Bethesda to foster a healthy, BIS-esque relationship with the fanbase.

Finally, I (the author, Kharn) would like to thank everyone for the interest, comments and criticism, but for the actual proof-reading would like to thank Briosafreak and per, Sander for suggestions, spelling notes and helping with the final design and, most of all, the article's chief editor, welsh, for spending hours meticulously picking out superfluous language, though I secretly suspect he spent half that time thinking up creative ways of calling my writing terrible.

Overall, it's a damn fine article trilogy. I liked the conclusion part that was meant directly to Bethesda.

Those text-info boxes are a nice add, too. I had almost forgotten what Todd had said about the fans.

Thanks, was wondering where the final part had gone.

Another good read, and a rather good conclusion to the 'Glittering gems of hatred' trilogy!

I'm happy to see stuff like this article, and also Bradylamas posted on here. I think it's a good way to 'educate' at least a few people who view the Fallout fans as rabid deathclaws. I also believe that Bethesda does read this stuff. Let's hope that they act on it as well.

EDIT: And I forgot to say, I also enjoyed those little 'snippet boxes'. Great way of bringing in related information, and it also makes the article more fun to read.

I forgot to add: after the revision, part 3 will still have two info-boxes. The fan bit (which will go to part 1) will be replaced by this (which I sadly had to leave out because it was necessary to put in the fan bit):

SLAM DUNK!
An old joke that has dwindled in relevance and kind of slipped out of remembrance, typing SLAM DUNK in the middle of a thread or, more likely, while discussing certain features of a game you didn't like was taking a stab at former BIS head honcho Feargus Urquhart, who was often percieved as trying to make a quick buck out of half-arsed titles, aka SLAM DUNKs

Dude, where's my credit for the image? Very Happy

What image?

LEWL

Actually, I had forgotten who had made the glittering gem image. You did? I don't believe you.

Very good job on the articles! I like each of them separately and all of them as a whole. And I love the ending, truly expresses most of our feelings about communicating with the fanbase.
I don't know if it's too late for them to change their politics as the game has been in production for several years. When they'll release real information about F3, it'll hit us like a bomb. In a good way or in a bad way, that remains to be seen.

decent enough :)

although throwing down the gauntlet wont do much good.

also, i'd say the reference is to Roshambo, rather than to simply 'Rosh'. more people are likely to know him by the first name.

The last part of throwing down the gauntlet is pretty useless, because at this point it's hard to imagine that Bethesda haven't made up their minds about all the core parts of the game. Also as it looks, they don't give a rat's ass about what we think and they will do as they please, what THEY think is right. It just might be what/close to what we want, but not because we wanted it. I've got some sort of feeling that when they do reveal what they have done, we're up for a big surprise...(I also think that when they reveal real info, the game will already be almost done).

And now we play the waiting game until they reply.

Wait! The waiting game has been going on for three years!

They just got served. It's on now.

I wonder why I suspect you might be a South Park fan....? :)

Another nice bit of text in the series...I want a glittering gem of hatred though...so I can release Rosh twice daily on Bethsofts HQ...(I'm sure they'd be more hesistant to do something stupid when he appears and claws away at the staff)

I'll throw down the gauntlet before your feet, Bethesda. Simply choose. Either communicate with the fans who kept this show on the road for so long and constitute the strength of the franchise. Or risk it all in a desperate gamble to make a game for a new fanbase who haven't even heard of Fallout before you purchased it. Both roads have been tried before. The former road has led to success, the latter road has led only to total failure.

Choose.

This part was awesome.

Thank you so much for those awesome readings, guys. This is exactly how every Fallout fan should notice the whole acting by Bethesda regarding us. The last paragraph is priceless.

Glittering Gems of Hatred and Don't Buy the Hype reflect our feelings towards Fallout 3/Bethesda for a beloved franchise which could simply be destroyed by Beth's lies, lack of communication and exclusion of the whole Fallout community. And it could simply be saved by talking and, most of all, listening. Just listening. Listen to a community that has survived 10 years, most of them filled with disappointments, but never gave up.

It would be a shame if Bethesda will not react on these articles.

Hah. I thought the first part had room for improvement, but taken as a whole, I'd say it's a masterpiece. The sheer amount of information and step-by-step deconstruction of "RT FPS = TEH FUTAR LOL!" should punch a gaping hole through Uncle Petey's bag of tricks.

But, err...

" ... it lost fan support and utterly failed with its console oriented FPS Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel."

FO:BoS wasn't an FPS.

...

With all the hype flying around my ears, I sometimes have a hard time following what's what. At this point I would no longer be surprised if Warcraft IV was announced as a "fantasy action hack and strategy" and Max Payne 3 as a "tactical combat simulation RPG"

So, uhm, what is Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel? Mobygames calls it an Action RPG.

Also, this from Mobygames made me chuckle:
# "Fallout: PoS" -- Angry Fan Title

PS: ah, snap, 'course BoS isn't an FPS, it doesn't have first person view *kicks self*

It's an Action game, pure and simple. Calling it an Action RPG is too much of a stretch.
It isn't first-person, though, so hence no FPS.

Good catch, though, I'd completely missed that.

where is Roshambo?

I think that is not a desperate gamble at all! All the Oblivion fans (which are many) will buy Fallout 3 just because was made by Beth$. In my opinion, Fallout 3 will be a commercial succes. I cant wait to see Beth'$ hype campaign.
