I think that is not a desperate gamble at all! All the Oblivion fans (which are many) will buy Fallout 3 just because was made by Beth$. In my opinion, Fallout 3 will be a commercial succes. I cant wait to see Beth'$ hype campaign.

Wouldn't they sell an in-house developed new PA franchise called "Fowlout" to those as well...if the only reason for buying it is that it's made by Beth?

I mean if they only aim for their current fanbase,there's no need for a well-known name to do it.

It's most likely -like you say- not a gamble,but I think the reason is rather that they hope to get better sales due to using a well-known franchise to those that has had no previous knowledge of Beth than to sell to those who already know what to expect...(but it's just my opinion)
