GORE: It just works baby!

So some weirdo on youtube reviews gore effects in video games. I don't know why, but it's the internet so sure why not. Anyway, I found this video because just from watching videos of Fallout 4 I could tell the gore effects looked terrible.

For those of you with no interest in watching a "gore review", he gives Fallout 4 a score of 45/100. Pretty satisfying seeing a low score for Bethesda so close to release for once.

Anyway, as a schlock-lover, it's shocking to me that Fallout's gore has actually gotten worse with Bethesda, considering they touted it as one of their selling points. As usual it's probably the engine's fault, 'though I have seen mods that improve the effects so we can probably just put it down to Bethesda's usual level of competence.

Anyway, we can continue to enjoy the glory that is Fallout and 2's gore effects at least. I'm really just posting this thread because the animations in Fallout 4 really bothered me.

Left 4 Dead got better gore and death animations for regular zombies than Fallout 3 and 4 got.

Bloody Mess in this game is just lame. Gibbing enemies in 3 and NV was nice, with a satisfying *squick* and mangled body parts everywhere. Now, enemies just turn into Kool-Aid dispensers and have their organs plop onto ground with no fanfare.

Bethesdean gore sucks ass because they're sticking with generic default Havok ragdoll animations. You've seen one of them, you've seen them all. That's why BIS Fallout handcrafted mo-cap animations kicks ass so hard!

A shotgun critical is one of the most satisfying moments.

I hate the gore effects in Bethesda games. Not just because they look crap, but also because I can't shoot anyone in the head without it getting blown off, regardless of the gun I use. It just takes me out of the game. Thank god for mods (as usual).

Fallout 3D gore was always disappointing. Too clean, too unrealistic (not saying realism is needed, but there are some lines!) , too underwhelming. Not enough giblits, not enough anything really.

I wanna see more realistic approach in Fallout rather than zombie slasher type of SoF2 or Killing Floor 2. At least leave SoF2 approach to Bloody Mess perk.

Realistic approach? Why? Fallout 1 didn't have realistic death animations. Fallout should have over the top gore.

Because it was isometric. Fallout should hide over the top gore behind crits and bloody mess perk like New Vegas hides aliens behind Wild Wasteland perk... Like it did anyway though, replay the classics more thorough.

Yeah I never said that Fallout had 'constant' gore. I don't like that either. I don't even like the Bloody Mess perk/trait. I think that it should only be behind critical hits that kill the NPC. Point still stands, you ask for a more realistic approach but those crit deaths ain't realistic at all, which is what I pointed out; That Fallout has never been realistic when it comes to gore.

I was talking about bullets' impact on a body of humans or creatures but derailed again. Isometric classics can't show it as detailed as needed because, well... sprites are small and 'camera height' is too big. Bethesda can't show shit because they are assholes.

That was my point about heads and limbs being constantly blown off. If I got shot in the arm by a pistol my limb wouldn't suddenly snap off, even if it was relatively close range. Most gore effects should just be a simple blood splatter and a pool of blood, akin to what we see in Fallout and Fallout 2. At best maybe their corpse might show signs of bullet wounds.

Critical hits on the other hand, should be allowed to go as crazy as the animator's imaginations can go. Fuck corpses turning into green goo. THIS is what should happen when you shoot someone with plasma:
