Gothic II, just played the demo . . Wow!!!

First time out of the vault
This game is supposed to have been released 2 years ago. Some how I have never heard about it. I just played the demo, and all I can say is . . . wow. The world seems huge, but not as dull as morrowind. Seems like there are lots of things to do and lots of skills u can learn., and very non linear world design.

Anyone played this? if so can you gime some thoughts, so I know if I should buy this or not.

Do you live in North America? It received quite a small amount of exposure, so it's no surprise you have not heard of it before. Quite a honest shame, in my opinion, but Atari has never been my favorite publisher (they handled the North American release). Also seems quite likely that there will never be an official English release of the Gothic II expansion, Night of the Raven.

By the way I talk about it, you can most likely surmise that I hold a positive appraisal of the game. The original remains one of my favorite action-RPGs, the sequel is very good as well.

Perhaps the largest flaw of the game is the control scheme. It's cumbersome, and especially in combat. Though if you stick with it, you do become used to it (the main part is getting that far, many people give up before that point). I have not played the demo, but I would assume it has the same control setup as the full game, and it sounds like you have no problems there.

The game-world is not a large as Morrowind, but in my opinion it is far more lush. Forests, farms, animals (both passive and aggressive), hunter's shacks, and everything else; it feels more real in a way. Morrowind was a bit sterile.

There is an element of non-linearity to it, but in the full game, you find if you venture into certain areas the enemies will tear you apart quickly (it does force a certain progression of the game). You can find all number of small quests, but the main quests are linear (though there are different approaches at times, though it does come down to combat often).

Also, the character system isn't completely open. You find that at a point in the game, you have to chose between classes.

In the end, it gets my heartily recommendation. If you enjoyed the demo, I think you will enjoy the full game. Like I said, the major sticking point are the controls (though the interface can also be a hassle).

The best thing about the game is how the world feels alive, they really got that right, lots of imersion because of that.

I remember Ratty mentioning this game...after a little research I decided wholeheartedly to buy it, but Im busy with college and wont get it 'til I have more time as well as finish other non-academic projects I have.

Kotario's impressions only add to my want however.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Even after reading all the recommendations from people here I still couldn't bring myself to buy it, but after trying the demo..... "wow" is right. The control scheme is a little odd and resulted in my dying more than my characters low hp did, but what I've played so far is great. I'll have to pick this one up soon.

Can someone tell me why Gothic I is so expensive? I was thinking about picking it up, but every result on Amazon is $45 or more while Gothic 2 can be had for $15. Is this game ultra rare or something? And if it is, why? It just came out like 3 years ago.

Heh, I got both Gothic and Gothic 2 for $10 each. Wasn't even looking for them. Sometimes EBGames is so great. Sometimes they suck though...

Anyway:
$29.99 at Amazon.com, first seller, "arcadestuffbuyer."

Thanks, must have missed that one. Still though - $30 for a jewel case? Unless they've stopped publishing the game that's ridiculous. I'd rather send a check for $30 to Pirahna Bytes and just download it. (Not going to download it, btw, just thinking out loud). Guess I'll have to scour the game stores for it now.

They have stopped publishing it. I've only seen it in stores once, and I bought it when I found it. Gothic 1 has a better storyline and better atmosphere, but the gameplay in Gothic 2 is better. Both of them are still great games.

The expansion pack to Gothic 2 is pretty cool too. It ties up some loose ends, and makes the world seem more complete then it was before. However, it does make the game much harder. Unfortunately the expansion hasn't come out in the United States yet, and it probably never will, but there is an excellent fan translation out there.

I played demo too and the game is perfect.Does anyone know where I can download Gothic I demo?I tried to find with Google but I only found Gothic II demo.

Both gothics are indeed great games. I've finished Gothic 2 atleast 4 times and i still find new stuff every time i play it.

Im eagerly waiting for gothic 3. :)

I forgot about that. OK, I guess I saw it in stores twice.

Montez, I hold the last known copy of the original Gothic CD.

It is still completely functional. I actually keep many things that have died out over past years on the internet. When I do post them, I get a tremendous amount of traffic and that object is allowed to be freed again.

It's like repopulating a race of animals. It's an about-to-be extinct speices and I've got the last two.

Eh, I broke down and bought a copy off amazon. Great game but I wish I had played it first, the controls are even tougher than the second one. I'll probably get around to Night Of The Raven next week, hope the fan translation is as good as people say it is.

I bought Gothic 1 a while ago, but couldn't get used to the control system and gave up. A few days ago, I started replaying it (with enough patience to learn the control system) and wow, hot damn is it good. I'm even going to the stoes tommorow to buy Gothic 2 (And probably Cossacks 2). Seriously, if you've never played the game, get it.
