Gran Torino

Mild spoilers.

Well, I'm proud to be a wop dago chink zipperheard slope kraut who disputes your judgement.

Yeah, Wally speaks in a way that is certainly "of its time", but if you take note of the way he actually behaves, he treats (at the beginning, not just talking about the later bits) the Hmong the same way he does the black kids he meets as well as his own starch white family: with a great deal of suspicion and distrust.

He may hold some racial steretypes (which all people on this Earth do) but he's not really an outright racist. He doesn't hate the chinks any more than he does the micks or the pollacks or the spooks.

I especially like how he dealt with the black gangbangers. Made me proud. I can see Clint doing that shit in real life. I rooted for him the whole movie and Tao as well.

That was my favorite scene. I laughed my ass off when he pulled out his 'finger' pistol and started shooting them. That wigger kid that he saves is actually Eastwood's son.

I was surprised at how funny this movie was. I thought it was going to be a big dose of violence but it was almost like a comedy.

So he called his real life son a "pussy"? Hahaha. Nice.

I liked the movie alot, most of what happened I could see Clint really doing which was just great, but the only thing I didn't like was the ending, I mean it was good and all but goddammit [spoiler:3681efd895]I wanted to see Clint rip one of those gangbangers dicks off and beat him to death with it after they beat the girl, I mean seriously, that just fucking pissed me off, I didn't want to see those dicks go to prison, I wanted to see their brains spattered all over the walls with that damn M1 Clint brandished so much![/spoiler:3681efd895]

And what do you think will happen to the gangbangers after they go to jail for raping a girl and killing an innocent man?

It was a good movie, and yes, he did hate everyone equally. Favourite scene was probably "my ass hurts from all the construction workers"

They'll be fine, everyone usually says "Oh they'll get fucked" and all that shit, doubt it, they'll probly get bigger in prison, get someone outside, and start up all over again, but if Clint had blown their fucking heads to shrapnel that would've ended it right fucking fast.

Rape is one thing that just grinds my shit in every possible way, even hearing that word makes me wanna knock a hole through the nearest breakable object, rapists should die... horrible flaming deaths... at the hands of crazy old korean war vets...

I don't think you understand the severity of rape, even for criminals. Criminal of minors too? You can guarantee that unless you're in solitary confinement, that you will get raped. Not only that, but before you get raped they're likely to knock in your teeth so you can bite down on man meat. Rape of minors is a no-no. Call it honour amongst thieves or whatever you might want to call it.

And sure it would have ended right then and there, but instead Clint's character gave them the suffering of having to go to jail, broke the silence of the community if they wanted to try again, thus really ending their reign in the community, even if they did want to come back.

Meh, even still, better ending would've been all of them dying a horrible painful fiery death at the hands of Clint motherfucking Eastwood, not going to prison and possibly getting raped and quite possibly getting someone on the outside to start up a whole new gang to continue the same bullshit worthy of Clints hellfire.

^ Why was it awful? Awful as in what was said or awful as in you don't agree with it?

Awful as bad directing. I think that everyone knew who will get the car, but Clint still made this text book scene of suspense which was unnecessary and looked really bad after 100 minutes of great film directing. Its just nitpicking.

Well, seeing as there's not actually any Chinese people in the movie, it's unclear whether or not he harbors any ill-will towards them.
Well I have no clue. I yet have to wait till its released here to see the movie. It just was mentioned in trailer that he said something like "why do these chinese have to move in here" or something. Trailers are not always 100% correct (you can see in some trailer even deleted scenes sometimes! ).

Well then hes not a racist. Hating all equaly is ... well I dont know what but not a racist.

Ahaha, Crni you just reminded me of the All-Ages Trailer.

About every other word out of Eastwood's mouth is overdubbed really poorly, so that there's no racial slurs in it. It's hilarious.

I'd say if you plan on seeing the movie, don't read this thread anymore. Even people giving their general impressions is a bit of a spoiler.

The comments so far are about what I expected. The movie has flaws, to be sure. Thing is though, it's still great. It's probably the deepest movie Clint's ever done, if not the best.

[spoiler:2bc3dedb4c]When it comes to whether or not Walt is a racist, I say no. I think one of the points of the movie is that actions make you racist or not, not words. It's a critique of how absurdly hypersensative society has become to "offensive" words. At the same time, society tolerates all sorts of offensive behavior.

There's nothing new about that idea, but Gran Torino says it like poetry.[/spoiler:2bc3dedb4c]

just saw the movie, and i think it's great.

i don't think Walt is a racist at all. i just think he thinks all people are equally worthless unless proven otherwise.
he also uses his gruf and quick dry wit to keep people at a distance. it's a self-defense measure on his part.

while offensive, he's what i would call an principled man with a clear view of right & wrong and the will to enforce this view to the end.

he's not a goody two-shoes and would much rather that other people do the right thing for him, but he always does the right thing in the end.

Correct. Walt judges people according to merit. His own sense of merit.

Hmm...I saw that one, but I didn't find it particularly memorable, because I can't remember most of the story. I'll watch it again some time.

Actually, most of his movies are of above average deepness. Even going back to Hang 'Em High.

well, i think Midnight can be viewed and appreciated on many levels, depending on your PoV.

kinda like you can read Candide like an adventure story and ignore all the rest.
