GSC Gameworld is shutting down; no S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2

[Update: Bourkovski is not in the employ of GSC, instead saying he is a friend of the company. His Tweet confirming closure stories was deleted, but he still says he has been told the studio's been shut down. That said, he's asking everyone to wait for the OFFICIAL word. Hopefully we'll know one way or the other soon.]

Might not be closing. Probably is, but MIGHT not.

This is the reason we relied on UkraNews, rather than some obscure guy's tweets.

Aah crap. I was never much of a super STALKER fan but nevertheless, the game was quite enjoyable. Always loved all those Soviet buildings, you know, that hardcore brick that I used to see everyday anyways.

And what's even worse, looks like Bethesda will keep rights to Fallout. Damn.

That's in the NMA gallery already as well. See news post.

I see no screenshots in there, though. Looks all like concept art to me.

Haven't played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. much, but what I saw, I liked.
I didn't really care much about the sequel, but too bad about the studio.

Looks like half a screeny with photoshop applied, think one other might be but it's hard to tell as they may be a mix.

I enjoyed all 3 games, mostly because of the setting and amazing atmosphere.

I hope some of the devs create their own studio and keep creating games in the same "vein"(or that this news turns out to be false).

Sorry about that, and indeed no screenies unfortunately.

Never played s.t.a.l.k.e.r but I did watch the movie.

The Tarkovsky classic? The game isn't really "faithful" to the book or the movie it only borrows certain elements from them. (Not that this is a bad thing)

I love the games and i don't think this is gonna end that way. Someone will buy the license or something but it wouldn't be the same, it's better it dies with honor and dignity.

The stalker games are truly unique .

While I definitely had my fun with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, this isn't a huge loss in my eyes. With the talk of a possibility for an always-online DRM scheme for a single player game, I couldn't really give a toot to support a product like that.

There is nothing like STALKER on the market.

It's that unique eastern europe feel - you can find in small amounts in the witcher and that's pretty much it, no other game has it - that special sort of realism.

I do appreciate the open world gameplay compared to the linear roller coaster ride called Metro 2033 and believe CoP was the strongest of the series. But as soon as they start talking about always-on DRM for a single player game(e.g. Assassin's Creed 2) I am no longer interested in the product until that DRM system is not even considered. Voting with my dollars, brah.

Ah the good old times. We used to sit around a camp fire all night talking and drinking votka then somebody would pull out a guitar out of their backpack and start playing. Those moments will stay in my hart forever.

If you read the dtoid article you'll see that they mention UkraNews which posted it first before GSC denied it, then UkraNews deleted the denial and posted Bourkovski's tweets. Chances are that UkraNews got the information that it was closing FROM Bourkovski first.

Whelp. there's no mention of this on either their website, or the STALKER site. So maybe it is just a rumor? Would definitely suck if it's not, those game scared the hell out of me. :(

I think the fear factor of the games is greatly enhanced by how long reloads take. Most of the time it was "oh no! I'm scared I might have to reload!!!"

Seriously, STALKER was a fantastic bunch of games, even though I bought them all either second hand or out of the discount bin. But I doubt they really know what they're doing. No single game had it all put together. The first one wasn't good enough in terms of mechanics, the second one had fantastic mechanics but half of the game was railroaded, the third one that great mechanics and a good story but it was too short.

Probably because the ending SUCKED!

And it was very unbalanced, for some reason...

Fuck. The STALKER series was the best damn shooter series that came out in the last few years and they've brought me hundreds of hours of pure joy and tight atmosphere. I remember going through the X-18 lab the first time, nervous as hell at what awaited me. Good times.

I bloody well hope this is just a rumor and that they've just changed buildings or something similar. There is a crapload of vicious rumors running about the internet as usual though.

The world most definetly is'nt a fair place, why can't this shit happen to some POS franchise like CoD...

I have to say it does not surprise me in some way. Even though it is sad. Those people have some of the best concept artists I ve ever seen.

Thing is just when I compare he "big words" they have thrown around before Stalker was out like that it will be a true huge free world with vehicles and even a helicopter for the player I was extremely excited. It seemed not only new but revolutionary. It felt like the game was 2 or 3 years ahead of its time. But 5 development years later we got a buggy mess. Not a "bad" game to say that. But some of those bugs really killed the game for me. Not to mention the zone/world was much smaller then they promised and well it was pretty boring as well (oh hey! I get a item quest on the other side of the world 30 min walk here I come!). Combat though was pretty fun! Since it was more a shooter and not an RPG - at least for me I am sure some disagree and see it as "great" RPG.

The good side was that Stalker reminded me much to System Schock and that was something I loved. I really would have liked to see a new System Schock game with the gameplay and visuals of Stalker (somewhat). Though ... that is rather wishful thinking.

Anyway. I really hope the people which worked on Stalker can find new jobs.

I always liked Stalker, but after all their broken promises, broken games and broken hopes, I can't say I'm very sad about their demise.
They kinda deserved it, sorry to say that.
