This is old, I know, but I still want to say something about it. You say sniper rifles don't have much battlefield use. I say they have. Check this out : In Korea an American soldier shot 60.000 bullets to kill one enemy on average. In Vietnam that was 200.000 bullets to mow down one Vietnamese (I don't know where these numbers come from but I've read them somewhere). Snipers, on the other hand used, in both wars the same amount for bullets for one kill ; 1,63 bullet(s).the sniper's credo isn't "One shot, one kill" for nothing.
And think of the psycological effect. Imagine being in the bush somewhere, and you here shots, people around you drop dead to the ground, but you can't figure out who is shooting them. So I think snipers have a damn good battlefield use.
