Happy Chinese/Lunar New Year!

Happy lunar new year to everyone.

This is the year of the Golden Rooster.

It's a special year that doesn't come around very often.

And this is the time of the year the reserved Chinese get out, party, get smashed, gamble, and talk loudly than anyone.

It's absolutely impossible to buy any tickets flying inside the country(China), since over several Hundred MILLIONS of people would be going home.

The big move is enough to shift the weight of the earth plates. Razz

Since I can't go home this year, I wish everyone else enjoy themselves, and have fun!

This is a year that comes around once in a hundred years, so take the chance and make a difference! (money, power, take over the world, etc)

Any people here celebrate lunar/chinese new year?

I bow before you Golden Rooster, bless me with the ancient secrets of good time night out.

*gambles loudly*

I do now! Any reason for celebration is a good reason. I will now venture to the local Chinese restaurant and get myself a nice Gong Bao. (I was going to do this anyway, but now I have an extra good reason).

Are there any years that DO come around very often? How's the whole year picking thing work? Is it like a giant horoscope?

And arrr... this chinese new year marks the raping of Mulan as a bloody good movie was destroyed by a stupid ass sequel :(

When I consider Disney only made Mulan to lift the ban that the Chinese government had placed on Disney products after 'Seven Years In Tibet', I can't help but hate it.

We learned about this in class this week (Far Eastern History). The Chinese have a 60 year cycle. Everything is continuous, not moving forward. There are 5 cycles of 12 years. There is an animal for each of those 12 years.

So would the Golden Rooster be any more unique than the other animals? It sounds like each one would come then every 60 years.

According to this article on wikipedia, there are only 12 animals, so the year of the Rooster comes around once every twelve years. I find no mention of this Golden Rooster business though, what's the deal with this?

And wikipedia says the year of the Rooster doesn't start until Febuary 9th; confirm/deny.

I didn't learn about anything golden. Let's ask the Chinese dude over there - >

Hell yeah, bitch, nothing like a little bit of Chinese special year-stuff to inspire a man.

Heh, that rocks though, party.

And hey, look at that, it's Starseeker! Wowzers

I'm sorry, did you just say that you were born in my ear?! That explains a lot.

And hey, look, its Starseeker!

Ozrat; always trying to crack jokes about his deafness in order to make us look past his handicap and to the individual behind his S(i)emen.

On topic, I went to the Chinese restaurant and said "Oh, and happy new year" as I was about to leave. The guy went "Yue knoow about Chinese Nuu Yeel?", ran into the back and then emerged with some weird looking ornament made out of three colored balls (yellow and cerise) and some pieces of red string that he gave me and expects me to hang up in a window.

Yeah, there was a chinese girl living at my place until a week ago, when she left for China to celebrate with her family. I got some new year's stuff.
