Have you moved on from Fallout?

I mean they are near omnipotent, sure, but it will take a lot of modding to change the fact that Skyrim is bland, emotionless and gray (is that some new trend or something? Is that what people do these days? Because to me it seems like someone just said 'well we cant make the game look any better, what do we do? Fuck it, let's remove the colours and call it gritty and realistic'). The truth is I'd much rather spend hours modding FNV or Morrowind - a good game on it's own.

It's trends in the air.
Morrowind was more original, it came from the designers minds, in their attempt to make something mind-boggling and impressive.
When Oblivion was around the corner, everyone had watched LOTR in the cinema, so Oblivion was much more lotr-i-fied, horses, European medieval, glittery fairy-tale exteriors, etc.

Nowadays, there is Game of Thrones. Drab, gray, gritty and realistic. Everyone masturbates to it, including me "Gnnnhhhh so gritty. Gnnnnhhh he mentioned people shitting themselves during battles, how observant hhhrnnn" so naturally, Skyrim jumped on that trend, drab, gray, and if they could, woulda shown people pooping themselves while fighting.

I find it so weird that the developers actually think like that, do they genuinely believe turning a historically fascinating and very original (as original as medieval fantasy gets) setting into something boring and derivative simply because of the idea of attracting some more people because "hey! It's exactly the same as that thing you love!"

Or is it more of a suits thing? "Our survey says the youth likes this, so you guys must make your game like this"

I'd say it's a little bit of both of the reasons you stated. It's nearly impossible but maybe Bethesda has actually learned something from Fallout 3 and might try harder to make a decent story this time around in Fallout 4. That's probably just wishful thinking though. I remember when I first played Fallout 3 and thought it was a great game until I played the originals and realized how horrible the plot and story really was.

Well, Skyrim was a step up from Oblivion, so you never know. .

They must know the critique that is out there. The question is whether they listen to that, or the money. .

Well, no. I still play Fallout (all versions, except the first person shooter thing on the consoles, obviously) - but my problem is with Fallout Tactics - which we really want to play multi player across our computers - BUT when we try to install it on our nice new computers, while Fallout and Fallout2 run perfectly, Fallout Tactics (which we have patched to 1.27) keeps demanding we put the Fallout CD in the drive. Most of the links to supposed fixes for this problem are either broken or spam-laden - so does anyone know what to do ?

Frustrated...and my degree is in IT, for goodness sake.... Help !

All the Best

Debatable. I'd say they respected lore in Skyrim more, and they also tried to write a better plot, except that they only spent ten minutes writing it. They would have used radiant storytelling more, another brilliant Bethpizda idea doomed to fail from the start. The game world in Skyrim was a lot better done and much less painfully artifical than in Oblivion. As for gameplay and RPG mechanics, Skyrim was a huge step down. There is literally no replay value in Skyrim.

They ignore NMA and RPG Codex, and probably read their own forums instead. This is not as bad as it sounds, they get exactly the same criticisms as they do on here and the Codex. Maybe even more than the usual.
The other alternative they read the Fallout subreddit, which is full of Bethesda fanboyism.

Melee combat gameplay is better in Skyrim, and the as an active member of the codex I am obligated to hate Oblivion's rpg mechanics. But I guess it's more traditional, with the classes and more than 3 stats. Haven't played Oblivion enough to fully compare the two.

Have you been to the codex?

They have probably learned a lot from both releases, and their receptions by the press and consumers; but I doubt what they've learned will be good for us, or will lead to crafting a better RPG; merely... to a better selling one.

Fallout 3 won a writing award. .
Yeah, on GDC. Meaning, developers gave it to them, who prolly know as much about stories as your average literary critic knows about developing games.

Have you been to the codex?
Yes. They don't actually criticise Fallout 3 and Skyrim most of the time, just call it utter shit cause they're too afraid to get a "Possibly Retarded" badge.
I also find it funny that you asked, because at the time of your asking, shortly before it I had asked you where you were in Wasteland 2 on RPG Codex. Of course, I know, no one reads usernames on the Codex (unless you're arguing with them or they are major parts of the Codex community), but still it's funny.

Ouch. Got me there.

But Fallout 3 and Skyrim are criticized, even if the consensus results in "it's shit" put-downs.

I would say that all RPG are criticized by the members, including some that are praised here, but on the other hand, the main reviewers are usually nicer in their review, even if they never 100% praise... Which is not bad for the sake of perspective. There is so many website that do nothing, but praise, or totally ignore things like writting/C&C as if they were irrelevant for an RPG.

Well, I always get emotional when I watch Black Isle Van Buren video, I mean....it had so much potential...it could be something....really worth the time....maybe more....sigh :puppy-dog:

I play FO, FO 2 and Tactics at least once a year.
It's about the only old game I can play anymore...for some reasons the graphics don't kill me like other same age games. Even the HD versions.
I wish they would make a new one ( Iso, TB etc ) W2 doesn't count or even come close. That game will blind you.
I have FO3 and NV and they were ok....but something was missing.

Wish I had finished my Tactics mod now...even figured out how to implement a speech tree for that game.

I don't think you can "move on" from Fallout. Gaming industry has yet to produce a better CRPG with that perfect mix of unique style & universe/story/dialogues/combat/humor/quests/depth/choices that original two had.

As for the future of Fallout franchise, I'm not in great hopes. Bethesda will stay Bethesda. They will make FO4 to appease FO3 fans (most of which, let's be honest, don't give two shits about great originals or even actual role-playing games for that matter). We may see spin-offs by Obsidian, if stars align right... maybe, and that's probably the only good thing I can see for the future of the franchise.

On the other hand, we have an amazing modding community who have dissected two original games through the length and breadth and made many great improvements and mods. Who knows what's to come up?

I would love a new fallout and i don't care if it is FPS/old school BUT i would love a game somewhere between fallout 1-2 and not F3/nv +

That's what F2 total conversion Fallout 1.5: Resurrection is for! English translation is going on fast, so stay tuned, perhaps it will quench your thirst a little. I'm sticking with it for almost 3 years, it has decent replay value for such a small modification.
