Home theater

I don't have a CHOICE, you'd know that if you had read my previous post. I live in the middle of nowhere.

Dude I have to say for that room don't get projector.

That room is perfect for a nice 42" Lcd wallmounted then get the logitech Z-5500 Digital 5.1 speakers mount the speakers get a new sofa and a nice small entertainment unit it will look sexy as!

Think of it as a goal to work towards :)

I don't have a shit load of cash I got a kid house repayments all the other cost with that car repayments. I guess the saying is work hard and play hard.
I have a 42inch lcd nice speakers and a new sofa. I am not going to say it was easy, I worked fucking hard for it.

I guess what I am getting at is you got to have goals and work your ass off to finish them, in the end you get great rewards

I could buy one every two months if I didn't have my car payment. Damn expensive BMW's.

Sony makes a few good projectors. They have a few decent home theater projector...the VPL-HS60. All the other ones are way more than your dad spent. That said, it's a few years old and it's LCD based. It's not bad...and it should atleast look decent. If it doesn't, then something is not setup right. That's about as simple as it gets. If you don't have that projector, then you have a business projector...in which case you're trying to use a projector meant for powerpoint for movies and home theater instead. Calibrate the projector...it'll make a world of difference.

Also, if you're seeing pixels it means that your screen size is too large for your viewing distance. Make the screen smaller or sit further back. It's known as the Screen Door Effect.

I don't have a clue what kind of projector it is that my dad has, all I know is that it's a Sony and it's about a year old. If this helps: he can project normal tv broadcasts with it, he can use it to watch dvd's and he can use it with his pc (PowerPoint, slide shows, whatever).
The trouble he has is that his living room is too small to get a decent picture quality and size (I'd say it's about 5 metres from one wall to the other). Also, he projects the images on a screen (specially made for this purpose), so the quality of the pic has nothing to do with that either (try projecting it on a "white" wall, that's usually horrors).
So yes: he can get a nice sharp picture, but then the size of the projected image is tv screen size or whatever. That's not why he bought the thing, you know? He thought he would get a home theater, not an extra tv screen. This stuff works best in large rooms, preferably huge rooms, which can be made perfectly dark (another important point). If you don't have this setting, you'll be much better off with an LCD or plasma screen, just like 90% of all these posters have been advising our good ol' Overseer.

I could buy two every three months if it wasn't for my excessive drug use and my daily visit to the local brothel.
Damn expensive whores.

Well, blinders can be amazing. And either way, it gets pitch black around here at 4 pm anyway (polar circle remember?). If I put the projector screen, because yes, remember this; you never project the image against a wall unless it´s painted with a special paint, you get a screen. If I project the image against the short wall I get about 7 meters viewing distance. Then screen size is limited to about 3 meters, but what the hell, screens are rarely larger than 2 meters.

I´m looking into $1500 HD ready projectors right now. And as I mentioned before, the projector is only for gaming and DVDs. I´m getting a regular CRT TV for watching TV.

Update! Just in time for my birthday too, which is in 20 minutes or so!

I got a HD-ready LCD (contrary to DLP) projector with a screen, totalling about $2050 (I convinced the store to give me the ceiling mount with it), about the price of a good HD-ready LCD TV, and set it up in my living room. I borrowed speakers from a friend.

I have to tell you... It's fucking awesome! Image quality is superb, even on the 180 cm screen I have. I can play xbox 360 games in 720p, not to mention watch HD movies. Even regular DVD movies are wow!

I'm sitting a bit too close now (approx 3, 3.5 meters) but I intend to move the couch to 4 meters, which after testing myself and asking around, I consider optimal.

Played Table tennis all evening yesterday. Very cool. Here's a pic:

The projector is an Epson tw-600, which recently dropped in price because of the release of the tw-700. The reason I didn't go DLP is because I find the rainbow effect to be way too annoying. Others don't but I did. The screen is from Infocus, it's not the best out there, but it kind of came with the projector, so meh. I didn't get a fixed frame screen because of the transportation issues.

I doubt bulb lifetime is going to be a problem. The bulb warranty is 1500 hours or one year, whichever comes first. I very much doubt I'll reach 1500 hours in a year. I can run the light at low intensity and still get a great picture, because my living room is naturally dark (daylight only lasts about 4-5 hours nowadays). I might get blinders for the summer, but I don't feel like I'm in a hurry, as I can run it on the lowest setting with all the lights turned on and still get a decent picture.

This is one of the most expensive purchases I've ever made, but also one of the best.

Thanks again for all the negative comments!

Not anymore, obviously. I have to live on rice for a few months. But it was worth it! My place is the new "hip" place.

Isn't the bulb damaged more at low intensity, at least the normal light bulbs are. :?
And by the way, what's with the lamp cord in the picture?

Ooh, looks good.
I still think you should've gone for the HDTV, though. :P

Also, what speakers are those?

The lamp cord is there so I can see during the evening, without using the projector (like watching TV).

Nah, while you get a very good HDTV for that money it doesn't beat a projector.

I got to borrow the speakers and the receiver from a friend, which I am thankful for. I don't know what brand/model they are, but they work for me. I don't need all that 5.1 $15000 surround stuff they showed me in the store. I think it's overrated as I'm far from being an audiophile. Sure, I hear the difference, but meh.
