How can I become more powerful?

ianpwilliams

First time out of the vault
In F2 I've been to the Den, and the place beginning with K, and the tribes in the south west, and I've still not got enough money to buy a decent gun and ammo and medkits, so I'm going round fighting with melee weapons, so I'm really weak. What's the best way for me to make some money (without constantly reloading at the casino) so that I can be a character who actually shoots stuff?

1. how much are you stealing?
2. how much are you exploring, and doing fetch quests?
3. are you doing world map exploring and capitalising on beneficial random encounters?
4. what are your SPECIAL + tag skills?
5. did you do any grave-digging in The Den?

1 - I'm not (trying to be a "good" character)
2 - I'm doing all the fetch quests I can find, although I failed a still-related one, and I can't find Vic's radio
3 - I haven't explored too much yet. When I get random encounters I'm too weak with just my melee weapon and no ammo
4 - my charisma is very low and do everything else is high (I'm Gifted and Fast Shot). Tags are Small Guns, Lockpick and Speech
5 - No, I'm not sure how or where I would do that (and I'm not sure if grave digging is good for the karma!)

Ditch the Den, go to Modoc, I don't understand why you try to be so enormously strong :D You're still in the early game, - play the game - progress - do more quests, that's how you get more money and more guns. When a mutant hands you an automatic shotgun, just for killing some ants, you're gonna feel silly about all this casino-save-and-loading you've been doing... And to be honest, I'll sell that gun for pennies, cus by that time, I'm like drowning in guns

just be patient, and explore the game.

I'm not trying to be super powerful, I just want enough money to keep my gun loaded and have a few stimpacks, because my small guns skill is nice and high, but I'm useless when I'm trying to stab things. I haven't done any casino reloading yet either - just gambled and won a couple of hundred. But yeah can't wait to get my hands on a shotgun.

Well... think of it this way - so early in the game, what guns do you even have, and what money? In the long run, how likely are you to be holding on to, and still maintaining ammunition for this gun? You are gonna be given, gifted, thrown-guns-after sooner or later anyway :D
Tip: steal from bad guys or random nobodies if you worry about karma. I only got karma-penalties for stealing from Arroyo members, but nobody else that I can think of.

Anyway, once you're past a few hurdles in the start, you can rest assured, weapons and ammo won't be a problem. You're worrying about it cus so far they've been hard to come by. Just keep moving, and stuff will come to you. Modoc is a good next stop for you to gather up a bunch of decent-enough loot, as well as a good chunk of XP, and poof, you have plenty enough for a sawn-off shotgun
(as well as a fully automatic military assault rifle, as a gift, if you play your cards right)

I'd also recommend you invest in going to Toxic Caves, as there's someone who can teach you how to skin geckos, which can be a gold mine over time.

Yeah I did that (barely survived though). Once I'd been taught how to skin geckos I went back to the caves but all the bodies had disappeared. Worth a try though!

remember the hunting grounds?

also tbh you really should sneak through there and blind the ones that attack you, lets you get the stragglers later on.

Oh yeah, I'll head to the hunting grounds.

Can't blind enemies due to no targeting because I have Fast Shot. But I managed to get through it eventually.

I've got about 90 rounds of 10mm ammo now (albeit armor piercing), so hopefully that'll keep me going for a bit.

I'm also having an issue where traders wouldn't accept my offers even if they matched or slightly exceeded the dollar value. Not sure if that was a bug? Ended up getting annoyed so I wound up Flick until he attacked me, and then killed him, which gave me loads of stuff including a magnum, and apparently with no karma punishment either. But I might reload the save before I killed him.

But it does make me wonder what evil townspeople I could kill in order to get their stuff. Obviously there are the slavers, but I'm not powerful enough to take them on yet. But might there be anyone else?

You might be trying to buy something exceeding your total carry weight. Load off, so you have more room to buy.

Flick is a minor loss, no biggie, and with those 90 rounds you could actually try to take on the slavers, I've beaten them with terrible odds, usually because I make a stubborn decision not to leave the Den without taking care of them. If you do,
don't forget to let the slaves know Metzger's dead, as well as mention it to Becky, in her lil casino bar

I did look there, but it wasn't anywhere in there. Someone told me to look around the vendors, but I couldn't see it there either. So I'm not sure what's going with that.

I'll try offloading some items anyway, hopefully that will fix the vendor selling thing.

can you not do code wizardry in F2 and cheat it into your inv? if it's truly lost I really doubt you'll find it.

You could always plant a few sticks of timed dynamite around the slaver compound?

Yeah I might have to cheat it if I can. Although if I kill the slavers then I'm guessing I wouldn't need the radio.

I've reached Modoc anyway and I'm gradually saving up for a shotgun.

And the vendor issue was because I was trying to sell an activated item (a lit flare!).

Killing Flick is in my Fallout 2 SOP. His inventory will keep you going a long way.

It is there. There are no glitches making it disappear. It looks like a walkie talkie, and it is not a unique item - aaand - you don't actually need it!
You're making big deals of little things, dude! :D
Just blast the hell out of all of Metzger's guys, save Vic (he only needs the radio so you can buy him free - for a 1 000 caps!)
