How's the DLC?

First time out of the vault
I'll start with some background. I picked up vanilla New Vegas off a recommendation from a friend. Partially because I wondered what the big deal with all this "Fallout" stuff was, partially because an open world RPG set in a post apocalyptic version of where I lived sounded like the best game ever. I enjoyed it a lot (despite the fact I got the ridiculously glitchy PS3 version) and decided to play Fallout 3. While not crashing nearly as frequently as New Vegas was a nice novelty, it was not nearly as good and I found myself playing it mostly to kill time. By time I finished Mothership Zeta I was downright irritated. After FO3 I decided to play FO2 to scratch the Fallout itch. While exceptionally good in almost every aspect, I still prefer New Vegas. It's the perfect combination of the power fantasy gameplay of FO3 and the ruthless wasteland gameplay of 2, in my mind.

But now for the topic at hand. I never bought the ultimate edition for PS3 since it was glitchy enough without all the DLC, and these games get more and more buggy the longer you play them. However, I've got an OK computer, though I only have an integrated graphics chip. Either way, my computer is supposed to run the game better than consoles according to Google. Then again, a Pentium 4 could run the game better than the PS3 did.

Long story short, I'm going to pick up the Ultimate Edition for PC pretty soon. Since I will inevitably play the DLC anyway, this may seem like a pointless question, but I'd like confirmation it wouldn't be a complete waste of time. I specifically chose to ask here as this place clearly has higher standards than other communities that usually rank Skyrim and Fallout 3 among the greatest video games of all time. The Fallout 3 DLC is generally liked elsewhere where as I found every single DLC besides Broken Steel to be varying degrees of insufferable.

So yeah, to end this convoluted first post, in your opinion, is the New Vegas DLC worth playing? How would you rank them?

Also I like cats. Are there any cat mods? I know they're supposed to be kind of sort of extinct but I want a cat. Preferably one with a backpack that can hold a bunch of power armor. And lasers.

we just hold each entry to the quality of the first game. it doesn't have to be as good just really close. :-D though, imho, New Vegas outdoes even the original :hide:.

The New Vegas DLC are perfect additons to the base game. and each of them contribute to the overall theme of New Vegas, Letting go. honestly, out of all the DLC for all the games I've played, NV's DLC are the DLC's I've seen that I would say are 100% Necessary if you're going to play the game. The Game feels incomplete without them tbh. they're all thoroughly connected to the base game and each other by characters, plot-threads, and lore. Characters like ulyseus, Christine, and Elijah have actually affected the wasteland in massive ways giving the impression that you're not the only one whose making a difference. I won't go into spoilers but it would be a shame for any fan of proper fallout to miss out on those amazing pieces of DLC.
I know they're supposed to be kind of sort of extinct
well tbh its never confirmed they're extinct. there was a woman in a bar in fo2 that thought they were extinct and house believes they're extinct as well. the second bit would probably make it a bit dumb to mod them into New Vegas Tho'.
How would you rank them?
I rank them as such:
1- Dead money- I always love the places in the wasteland that are so inhospitable that they become the stuff of legends. and boy is the sierra madre one such place. probably the DLC closest to that classic Fo1 feel.
2- Old World Blues- Like the silliness in fallout 2 but done in a much more lore-friendly and hilarious way. the gameplay here is more like Fo3 in that its basically a sandbox and you go explore. but with actually good characters and actual cool shit to find when you explore.
3- Honest Hearts- this is probably the best way lore can be handled. there's a lot of history in this DLC and Great lore is mostly all this DLC offers as its mostly fetch quests. but its a great bit of DLC if you want to see how Ceasar's legion is affecting areas outside the Mojave. plus you get to meet the legendary Joshua graham.
4- lonesome road- is a great DLC if you think about it from the courier's POV. its tied into your past a bit but its mostly a shooting gallery with some great new creatures but make no mistake its very hard to avoid playing this bit of DLC as a straight up shooter and that's why I've ranked it last.

where as I found every single DLC besides Broken Steel to be varying degrees of insufferable.
>"fallout 3 has 200 endings''
>vanilla game has 2 endings of minimal difference
>Broken Steel is released and De-Canonizes both endings
>Broken Steel doesn't write New endings for the Main Quest or the Various Towns
>fallout 3 has 0 endings.
todd was a *little* off on that estimate dontcha think?
seriously tho' I thought Broken steel and Operation Anchorage were trash, mothership zeta is just insulting, and point lookout was Meh. The pitt is the closest fallout 3 ever comes to resembling proper fallout. (and surprisingly, it gets pretty close)

Yeah, the NV DLC is pretty great. I'm currently doing my first playthrough on Old World Blues so I don't know how much help I can be.

But anyway, I suggest doing them in this order;

1. Dead Money ( once you've met ghe brotherhood and are at least level 25).
2. Old World Blues (When you're around level 30 and got some decent gear).
3. Lonesome road- Just before the 2nd battle of Hoover Dam.

Honest Hearts should be done either before or after Dead Money. Preferably after meeting the Legion.

- Old world blues is basically a Fo3 copy pasta gameplay wise, but with better writting, more fun and a ton of Wasteland references.

- Honest Heart is what the walking simulator of Fo3 should have been. Less critters, more scenery, environmental sound.

- Lonesome road is a shooting corridor.

- Dead money is more claustrophobic and challenging puzzle with occasionnal fear.

All four has way better writting than Fo3. All four has quite some lenght. But all four become repetitive at some point. Too much walking, looting, running and shooting, and some scenery and critters come back too many times. They could have dedicated those ressources into more writting and more C & C.

I think everyone here has pretty said everything I would say. However I would like to add two things ;

1. I think dead money is little bit repetitive in places and as location is kinda small but you have do abit of back tracking at times. Also it kinda be quite changeling I found this to be the hardest DLC.

2. Lonesomeroad even though is really just a shooter like throught the DLC with like zero dialogue it feels like this was done purposefully and does actually make a nice change of pace in the game. My favorite thing about it was that is it felt like a jounry a-b (It literally is a jounry). Like the main game but more of a literally jounry rather than talking to people and experiances things etc. It felt kinda good to be but in a linear kinda path for a change and it does't really well. Also I know it sounds simple it does actually feel very lonely. You will have a change to over think things etc.

I dunno its just impressive for me because I have never played something so simple that worked so well

I hated Dead Money at first but it grew on me and I'd rank that as my favorite New Vegas DLC. The rest: OWB > Loneseome Road > Honest Hearts.

its definitely an "acquired" taste. it was made for a very specific type of gamer. I think the reason it was so hated is because its actually challenging. many gamers, like children, don't like to be challenged.

I LOVE how organic the insertion of these DLCs are with the vanilla game.

My rank:

DD > HH > LR > OWB

OWB sux a lot because the bullet sponge enemies (I only play in Very hard). But great stuffs there. Gear, free perks etc

I never understood this attitude of not wanting to be challenged in games.

Like, how is it at all satisfying to get past a battle that you knew you were going to win?

I allways felt like NV was good in story and writing but it was empty. The DLC's on the other hand are pretty much spot on! Honest heart is the weakest for me besides writing and such, the rest are awesome in their own way with Dead money probably being nr1 for me.

Old world blues can be a bit annoying due to the enemies taking normal bullets like champions, but i tend to pick up a melee weapon or a fist weapon even if i have no/little points in those and just swing untill i have a good enough gun with enough ammo to finish the DLC.

I think the opposite. The DLC's for me have very interesting stories but rather uninteresting gameplay. Uninteresting as in very fun, but mostly you are following a path and killing enemies that are always hostile. I personally dislike lonesome road, which was probably meant to be the climax of the whole NV storyline.
Still, these are not your common DLC. They have good writing and fantastic backstories, that really make NV what it is. I can't think of NV without Joshua Graham or Father Elijah.
So if you are interested in the game, you should definitely play them

edit: actually replaying honest hearts now and i take back part of what i said about the gameplay being uninteresting. Granted enemies are hostile by default, which is bad for a fallout game, but the gameplay is great for what it is. A great open world, without the clunky invisible walls and barriers of the mojave, where the encounters also take you by surprise. And the writing is ace, so there's that.

For those crying, like myself, because of the sh!@%&#tty fu^%^@@^#&@cking piece of garbage the gameplay of OWB is, I recommend Puce Moose Tweak and Balance Center @ the Nexus.

You can download and install only the modules you want, so players aren't forced to use something they don't need and better yet, the OWB spawn module ENDS that boring and infinite respawn of enemies.
I'm not kidding, at one time I killed a lobotomite near Ulysses cave and the very next game hour walking by the area, the same lobotomite respawn in front of me!

And I think you will like the reduced loot module for every DLC, it change dramatically how they are played.

After all, there isn't anymore too much loot worth of picking, so let's play the DLC quests, shall we? ;)

This is something Sawyer overlooked in his mod BTW. Since he changed how weapons, damage and armor work, so you don't need an armory or even carrying hundreds of bullets/charges/explosives anymore, the loot in the DLCs should've been reduced.
You don't need them anymore, since two or three bullets deppending of the weapon now kill almost everything.

Heck, the cowboy repeater finally resembles a weapon now, specially with the cowboy perk.

All the DLC have their own little genres and morals.

They all have downsides and upsides, and for the most part are good.

IMO Honest Hearts felt a little shitty in terms of quests, but the map design and hidden stuff was very well done.

OWB is my favourite, its overly cheesy, and knows it is. Not very "Fallouty", but that's because its in an isolated place with insane brain robots.

Dead Money was a pain in the ass, I ended up cheating past the fucking instakill radio things, and legged it to the escape, taking ALL THE GOLD WITH ME!

Lonesome road was very linear, but that was the point, it was a 'road'.

All have some imbalance issues which IMO makes them a bit jarring, but Lonesome road takes the cake, with high level deathclaws in that one being tougher than the LEGENDARY DEATHCLAW.

DLC's aight mang, but in all seriousness most of the DLC is pretty good. I didn't like lonesome road very much and I hated Dead Money at first but it grew on my after the third time I played it. Honest Hearts was pretty fun, and Old World Blues was really fun.

Dead Money, hands down best DLC

OWB is fun

LR is abit linear but okay with some cool weaps/items/armour

HH has what I believe to be the best terminal entries with extra points for dreadlocked tribals ( personal bias )

NV's DLCs are one of the best in the genre and hands down the best that "modern" Fallouts offer. If I had to pick the one I enjoyed the most it would be Honest Hearts, it offers welcomed scenery change, nice piece of worldbuilding and if You are fan of exploration, this is THE DLC. But honestly all of them are great, they have their issues, but that is not something that mods cannot fix/minimize.
