I like bethesda's view on the BoS.

First time out of the vault
Yes i like beth's brotherhood in both fallout 3 and 4. yes i know what you're thinking, but let me explain. This is one of the few things that bethesda evolved through the sieries. in Fo3 bos changed becose hs become an absolute monarchy,in which an elder can radically change the brotherhood's codex and mission. This is why lyons had the power to cause a internal war in the capital chapter .The reason why maxson can change it again to return to the main mission or move war to an unknown enemy in a foreign country withouth telling his troops why and who are fighting it's that his a sort of absolute tyran. The bos hes become the Enclave.
the brotherood with maxson has become an army, his men are brainwashed,he's a sort of semi-god because he's the descendent of the founder of the brotherhood. Just like Caesar. they also want to clean up the wasteland from ghouls, synth and supermutants but thanfully no wastelanders like the enclave. but even if they have a quasi-fasctist military government,at the same time they're a miniarchy who don't exircise abslute power on teir people. I mean, they don't take taxes and their troops are volunteers.
Why this change? because the original brotherhood was an oligarchy, with different chapters and outposts at the same level. When the capital chapter lost communication with california chapters the elder become eastern bos's only leader.
what do you think about it?

Too bad it's not very well written. Lyons decides to help people "just because" and for no better reason than that. He comes, sees how much of a shithole the CW is and decides to help people at the drop of a hat. Also, screw knights in a shiny armor BoS and their "steel be with you". They are a bad joke, not the Brotherhood of Steel.
At the same time, Maxson is written as an all-round BADASS that is great at everything he does and every decision of his is the correct one. Nobody every doubts him, nobody tries to oppose him. He is perfect in every way possible. Flat and shallow as hell.
But still leagues better than F3 BoS.

this is why in eastern brotherhood an elder has absolute power. Lyons helps wastelanders just becuase he can and he wants, and can order the death of who disagree (outcasts). Idem,Maxson is potrayed as a king,a supreme leader. paladins, scribes and knights idolize him just like legionaries, preatorians and frumentarii idolizes Caesar.

You like the fact that they make you a Paladin just for showing up to the police station?

I think what you mean is you like the IDEA behind their Brotherhood, because I sincerely doubt anyone can believe they are written well as presented in F4.

Its hilarious as fuck that you are made a paladin right away. Bethesda knows what they are doing. :D

*So I've heard the BoS in F4 is more similar to the classic BoS in regards of their mentality and practices.*

---- Cutback to F4 ----

Paladin Danse Whistles at the player character, beckons him to come over.

"hey you! man I like your style! look at those mooooves! dayum son! How would you like to become a Paladin? I'm so gonna sponsor you I mean man look at you you're dope man! you're dope!"

*We get on the Vertibird and meet everyone*

"So Paladin Danse sponsored a wastelander into our ranks? cool! Get your Power Armor from the Armory...btw these are some of the most powerful suits in the world as we know it! and we're trusting it to you...a stranger Danse just met! Nice seeing you!"

Paladin Danse looks at you.

"Dayum you're totally rocking that suit brah! btw I know that I'm your higher up, but I'm gonna take orders from you from now on man cuz man you're just awesome I feel totally cool with that!"

-----

feels just like the old brotherhood.

Contrast this with the Brotherhood sending Wastelanders on a suicide mission to the Glow in order to get rid of the riff raff in the original Fallout games, or even Fallout 3 where they scoff at the notion of letting you into the brotherhood until at least some time later after you've done a lot more than just showing up.

I'm really sick of Beth games making me some kind of ultimate powerful God in charge of every f***ing organization for doing nothing more than showing up. It was tolerated in oblivion and Fallout 3 and then completely stupid in Skyrim (becoming head of the mages guild was dumb as hell in that game) and Fallout 4 has taken it all the way when Preston Garvey calls you General in the first 30 minutes of the game and hands you some power armor and a mini gun to go kill deathclaws. It plays out like a Call of Duty game in that first 1 hour.

This studio is going to need new writers unless it wants to keep it's intellectual level at Potato.

Honestly, the change felt too dramatic, and I don't like how the Capital Wasteland is mentioned by the BoS soldiers to still be a lawless dump. Seriously, after defeating the Enclave (that somehow still existed after 2), solving the water problems in Broken Steel, the Lone Wanderer killing who knows how many raiders and Talon mercs, and Maxson re-uniting the Outcasts and the Brotherhood he couldn't pacify the Capital Wasteland? Makes the whole Fallout 3 game feel pointless.

Also, BoS (and the Minutemen and the Railroad) should've had more quests for you to complete before you could climb up the ranks. But then again, Bethesda has been making it easier and easier to climb up the ranks of any and every faction and guild with each passing game since Oblivion.

Paladin is kind of a moot point when you're already a general.
Yea, your full title in Fallout 4 is General Paladin Institute-President Railroad-leader Sole Survivor.
I have to have that many jobs, do you know how many of my companions i'm in a relationship with, that ain't cheap.
Just buy more lockpicks and they'll stay with you forever.

MMMM... just pick that lock!

Oh you mean the Brotherhood that would get rid of Brotherhood wannabes by sending them to dangerous places like The Glow(a radioactive danger zone by the way) to retrieve a holodisk? Yeah totally like the "Here take a rank with all the perks that come with it like power armor and powerful weapons stranger!".

Yeah it's almost like a bad joke. I mean, heck the least they could do was to make us the general AFTER we retake the castle.

It's just so silly that all these factions are so trusting when it comes to you like you're some kind of god with superficial powera which makes everyone suddently want to suck your dick or call you their BFF for life!
