I Think We Need To Realize Something

I thought the game retained the really bad 80's sense of humor of it's predecessor nicely. The biggest mistake that was made with Wasteland 2 was Brian Fargo using his association with Fallout to sell it. It set the wrong expectations with a lot of people.

How exactly? [honest question].

If anything the Fallout link was a harbinger of what to expect.

I think Wasteland 2 is a great game, but it's practically Fallout 3 ~as it should have been... which is bad, because the game is Wasteland 2.
(...And a good Fallout 3 == a bad Wasteland sequel.)

I never really got a Fallout vibe from Wasteland 2 beyond the obvious similarities. I feel a lot people who backed and bought the game literally thought they were getting Black Isles Fallout 3 with a different coat of paint.

I didn't. I played for choices and dialogue, and didn't really like the more combat orientated style.

That's understandable. I expected the game to be combat focused based on my time with Wasteland 1.

Fair enough. Which is why I'm getting Age of Decadence (I played a bit and loved it).

I was certainly not expecting a practical sequel to Fallout from a game called Wasteland 2. Fallout maybe inspired by Wasteland, but they were completely different in almost every respect.

*It was actually a burn of the same kind as FO3 turned out to be; for I certainly did not expect a practical sequel to Oblivion from a game called "Fallout 3".

OP may be right. Ceteris paribus, Bethesda should follow on the same path, luckily responding to some of the criticisms from old fans, but their records shows that they will remain insulated. The huge commercial success may be interpreted by them as their ultimate success in creating Bethesda's Fallout formula, which is sad and pathetic. On the offchance that their monetary success may lead them to lessen their grip on the franchise, there may be a light down the road, and then they can turn to another franchise to prey on.
