ICC- Zombie Apocalypse- At the Truck Stop

"Hey toots, some more coffee, please." Luke says taping his mug as the blonde waitress darts past.

He gets up and walks to his car.

"Don't worry, I'm not stupid enough to run with a highway policeman a yell away..." He says preemptively as he exits the diner, expecting protest.

Once at his car he unlocks the glove box, pulls out his revolver, clips the holster to the back of his belt & pockets 2 speedloaders.

The bullshit at the diner had made him nervous. First riots everywhere on the TV and then those racist morons looking for blood. Hehe, maybe they could get more than they bargained for.

Another cup of coffee might be a bad idea, the day seemed exciting enough as is, but he really didn't feel like hitting the road yet. There was so much road to cover & quite frankly Luke doesn't like to spend much time behind the steering wheel. Ironically, his job made him drive all over.

As for racism, Luke had learned a long time ago that the color of the skin changes nothing. Everyone is equally worthless until proven otherwise, he reckoned. Either way, he wouldn't mind splattering the brains one of those morons all over the counter, if they decided to get out of line. Double pay off: he'd be doing the world a favor & getting the good ol' feeling of satisfaction that one is only able to get after an exciting kill.

Before he reenters the diner, he briefly looks at the people outside near the hotel. Seems like they're looking at something, but Luke can't tell what. And quite honestly, he doesn't really care.

OCC:

Luke - Idea: 66 roll vs 45 skill

OCC- Mr. Foo succeeded at his Electrical Repair roll (6% roll vs. 70% skill)
Mr. Foo failed his Know roll (94% roll vs. 90% skill)
Mr. Foo succeeded at his Idea roll (62% roll vs. 90% skill)
Mrs. Foo succeeded at her Know roll (12% roll vs. 55% skill)

In the garage-
Stephanie had developed a rather thick skin and tried not to be offended by Earl; she had heard a lot worse from guys at college. "Yes, I work for the EPA," she said, her smile unwavering "but I've been on loan to Dr. Hausmann for a year or so. She's very busy with important work. I'm her assistant, so she sent me here to work out the details. Now that we've done that, all she'd need to do is talk to you for a few minutes and sign the paperwork. If it means getting the chopper up a lot sooner, I think she'll agree."

"Send her over, then," said Earl. "In the meantime, I've got to get back to work."

"Thank you, sir," said Stephanie. "I'll do that." She and Bo left the garage and walked back towards the cruiser.

This time it was Bo's turn to be impressed. "That was amazing," he said when they were out of earshot. "I've never seen anyone get the better of Boss Earl before."

"I didn't exactly get the better of him. Dr. Hausmann will still have to convince him to sign off on the deal, and he'll get paid quite a lot."

"Yes, but I'm sure that's just a formality. And it's not as much money as he thinks it is. You saw how he doubled his gas prices. The way things are going that'll happen everywhere; Earl just did it sooner than most. And when everyone else charges six bucks a gallon, Earl will charge at least ten. The price of everything will go up."

"Yeah, I know." Stephanie marvelled at Bo's confidence, and some of it was rubbing off on her. "With Gary and Earl's team helping, Bob should be able to MacGyver something up pretty fast."

Bo nodded. "Earl's guys may not be a NASCAR pit crew, but they'll get the job done fine. And Earl will really want that bonus, so you can be sure it'll be done by one. He didn't even insist on a down payment. That's not at all like him. He must be smitten with you, and who can blame him?"

Stephanie glanced up at him as they reached the car. "Are you flirting with me, Officer Richards?"

"Please, call me Bo. And may I call you Stephanie?" He opened the door for her.

"Sure, Bo," she said, sliding into the shotgun seat. She had never had such strong feelings for a man before. She felt like she was glowing like a Bunsen burner. Intellectually, she knew it was just pheromones, chemical reactions, and her innate mating instincts, but in her heart she couldn't help but think it was more than that. She was having some very irrational, unscientific thoughts - and she liked them.

Bo got in the driver's seat and started the car. "Let's try the radio again while he head back to the diner," he said, turning it on. "Maybe we can reach someone." He pulled away from the gas pumps.

In the Motel 8-
Mr. and Ms. Foo looked at the picture of the young woman Bud was showing around. Mr. Foo didn't recognize her at first, but there was still something about her that tugged at his brain. Ms. Foo stared at the photo a little longer. That girl seemed familiar to her somehow. She searched through the muddled recesses of her memory.

"I most humbly apologize for the delay," Mr. Foo told his guests. "Let's see if I can get this sorted out." He kissed his wife on the cheek and said something to her rapidly in Chinese, then sat down at the computer and inspected it, making sure the network cables were properly connected. "When I was outside, I saw a bright glowing light coming from Sidney," he said as he worked. "It looked like a fire to me."

"A fire?" asked Felice. "But Sidney is so far away, how could you see it?"

"I do have good eyes, but yes, it must be a pretty big one to be visible from that far away. There were cars going that way, but none coming back. I wouldn't head in that direction if I were you until we find out more." He looked up at Ms. Foo. "Dear, why don't you turn on the lobby TV and see if there's anything about it on the news?" Ms. Foo nodded, walked over to the set, and turned it on.

Luke-

As Luke goes to his car he passed Baldwin returning with a tookit and a large wrench. Baldwin leaves the toolkit by the garage, and Luke notices that Bladwin is carrying the wrench behind his back.

OCC- nice to see you back Suaside. Anything you'd like your other players to do? At the moment they are busy doing repairs.

Stephanie and Bo-

OCC- I assume you are trying the get the police radio? Or the local radio?

Mr. and Mrs. Foo, Bud-

When Mrs. Foo turns on the television she gets on snow from local station and frozen images from national networks. She tries every station without success.

Those outside the hotel can now see a dark trail of smoke coming from the area of Sidney, far to the horizon.

OOC : Flip fails idea roll; 50% skill vs 62% Roll http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=494389

ICC : In the Diner- Flip was still at the table, accross from horst, waiting for hammond to finish with Dave. "Can't Fuckin' believe this. Nigga's, Chinks, Mouthy skirts, all rolled into one fuckin place, all while Hammond takes his sweet fuckin' time."

Outside of the motel 8 - Alex had began his run, Fallowing a stretch of dirt road. The marine reservist ran at a slower speed, this was more of a jogg, than a run.

OCC- Yes, I meant the police radio.

IC-
In the Motel 8-
The Foos were worried that the TV didn't seem to be working either. They were still getting electricity, but there was no signal. "I'll try the Internet when I'm done checking this out," said Mr. Foo, working on the computer. He knew that ARPANET, the precursor of the modern Internet in the 1960's, was designed with the ability to continue functioning even in the event of nuclear war. The network connection looked okay, so he reasoned that he should be able to get online no matter what was going on unless his service provider was having similar problems.

OCC- I am waiting for Fireblade to post something but...

Stompie- Alex can only jog on the train that goes north. This is in the direction of the meteor and the PMS compound.

Alex is just going to running and leave Jenny in mid sentence? A young marine guy will just run off on an attractive college girl?

Suaside- note that Luke is not in the diner at the moment but is getting his gun from the car. This is for future reference- you'll see.

Mr. Handy- I have posted on the OCC thread about the ARPANET. While the rumor or myth of surviving nuclear war might be true, right now the Foos got no internet or cable TV.

I will post either tomorrow or Saturday. Hopefully Fireblade will post up.

OCC- Some edits here-

"Did you just say 200$? Just like that? For one day's work? Man, did I ever miss my calling!" Said Thomas.

"Look here boy, I haven't got all day! I want a straight answer right now: yes or no?" Said Rita impatiently.

"Are you kidding me? 200$ and I don't have to wash dishes all day? You just found your man!"

"I'll take that as a yes... But I want you here tomorrow and on time! Don't let this go to your head, boy! You'll probably be washing dishes for a long time, seeing how you're such an educated man and all..." Rita said with a scowl on her face. "Now get your ass over here and meet your employers for the day!"

"Yes ma'am!" Thomas realised that he had just stepped on the wrong toes and and was wondering what he could do about it.

After thinking things over for a whole 2 or 3 seconds his attention turned to another 'small' oversight he had just made: he had a date of some sort with Ashley. Well that was just fubar. I'd better tell her, he thought. This could get messy...

"Ma'am, I just have one thing I've got to take care of. It'll be just a minute! " Said Thomas who then walked over to the counter and looked around the room for Ashley. She was just returning to pick up an order.

"Hey, Ashley, guess what just happened! "

"I don't know, what?" Said the young girl.

"I just got offered a better position!" Said Thomas, a slight lie.

"What? Is Rita promoting you to full chef or something?"

"No, I just got in the television business! I'm going to join a news crew!" Said Thomas proudly.

"But... how? ... why? have you been drinking on the job?"

" No, Ash! This is for real! This could be by big break! I get to go out with a news crew! Maybe I'll be on TV!"

"Well, I'm glad for you, but what about tonight? " Asked Ashley with a frown.

"Oh, well... maybe we could put it off until later? I know I promised you but this chance is just too good to pass up!"

"Funny, I thought you would think the same about tonight... " The offer of yet unrealized passion clearly suggested.

"Damn Ashley, why do you have to be like that? You know I love you! I'm doing this for you too! How do you expect me to be able to provide for a family if I'm stuck with this lousy job?" Said Thomas in a sudden flurry of thoughts.

"Hold on there! Aren't you rushing things a bit? Are you sure you know what you are saying? " Said Ashley, now looking at Thomas with the kind of look that one reserved for the socially awkward or unwelcomed.

This look was somewhat lost on Thomas. "Damn it Ash! I've never been so sure about anything in my life! I love you and I want to be with you for the rest of my life! "

From back in the Convenience store, Rita called out, "Thomas! Are you coming today?" Rita had returned to the counter in the little shop and with her were the two news people, the old scruffy guy and a fashionably dressed young woman.

"Just one second! Ash, trust me, this is going to turn out fine! I'll make it up to you when I get back. Bye!" He said.

Thomas rushed away to join Rita, Tisha and Willie, wondering why Lady Luck was smiling on him so suddenly. He should be careful though, the tides of fortune are whimsical...

Ashley remained there, at the bar, somewhat shocked and rather unsure what to make of all this. Then she shrugged and continued on the business of the day.

OCC- Edited to include the early part of the post, where Mrs. Foo talks to Bud.

IC-
In the Motel 8-

Mrs. Foo looked at the picture of the girl again and suddenly recalled where she had seen her before. Glad to have remembered an obscure detail for once, she excitedly told Bud: "I see girl before! She stay here, few months ago."

"She did?" asked Bud, interested. "Did she say where she was going?"

"Yes. She stay here one night, on way to San Francisco. I not think she have car, though. She pay in advance, but I not see her check out. Last time I see her, she go to diner. Left room clean. Missy Ellen might remember her too, or ask at T-Bone."

Mr. Foo finished going over the computer. Physically, it seemed all right and could run the software installed on its hard drive, but it could not send or receive data over the network. Its Internet connection was down. Since the entire Internet could not be offline, his ISP must be down, just like the TV.

"I can't connect to the Internet, either," he said, standing. He spoke briefly to his wife in Chinese, and she nodded.

"I try phone," said Mrs. Foo. "Call network provider." She picked up the receiver.

"Excuse me, please. I'll be back soon." Mr. Foo went into his private room in the motel. As he walked, he considered the disturbing events that had taken place this morning.

At first he wondered if maybe someone had finally gone and pushed the button, but quickly dismissed the thought. With the missile base in this area, it would have been a primary target in the event of nuclear war. They would have surely heard a blast or felt a seismic tremor, plus the electromagnetic pulse would have fried the computer's chips and it would not have worked at all. Sidney was burning, but it had not been nuked or there would have been a mushroom cloud.

Perhaps the meteor shower Jenny Cooper had mentioned had something to do with the problems and the fire. She did say it had done some damage. Still, the only way to find out for certain was to establish contact with the outside world. Some of his contacts from the old days were still around, and they might have more information. He closed the door behind him.

On the roof of the Motel 8, the satellite dish began to rotate.

Outside the Hotel-

Alec begins his run, heading North on the single dirt road. It's in the general direction of where the others mentioned the Prairie Militia Society has its compound, but as Alex clears the first rise he sees little but desolate grasslands that slowly rise towards the Northwest. Somewhere beyond that are the mountains.

OCC- Alex is running about 10 miles so it will be awhile before he posts.

Jenny and Michael agree to drive out to see the meteorite. Michael returns to his room to gather his things while Jenny breaks her camp.

In the Hotel-

The Lathan family is finally up and heading towards the office and then to breakfast. They make enough noise that Samantha the zoologist is now awake, although she is tired from watching the shooting stars the night before. She flicks on the TV and finds it doesn’t work.

Felice is not sure what to do; as she lacks the cash to pay the tab. Azadeh is paying cash and waits for Ms. Foo to give her change.

Bud???

In the garage-

Bob
has gotten much of the gunk that has blocked up the fuel pump out when Gary comes in. “Hey. One of your guys said you might need a hand so what can I do? I got to tell ya, I know shit about helicopters. Got a fuel problem? Maybe you need to be able to drain your tank before removing the fuel lines? Is there any kind of additive you might be able to add to the fuel to dissolve blockage?”

Boss Earl is looking over Dave’s shoulder…. “What do you know about helicopters kid? You think you can work on it?

Max is scratching himself and then lies down and falls asleep.

Father McCormack remains on the balcony… unsure what to do (Fireblade???)

In the parking lot-

Jim Kerr is able to hear that the military helicopters are reporting that Cheyenne is ablaze. They helicopters that have been sent out from the airbase are being recalled from their efforts to rescue base personnel. Apparently the helicopters are being deployed to recon the base perimeter while guard units are deployed. Combat helicopters are asking whether they have the right to engage “hostile elements” near the main gate.

In other news, Jim hears that a helicopter unit of the Nebraska State Police is flying relatively near their position but is short of fuel. “This State Trooper Erica Spears…. Is there any airfield out there were I can land my bird for fuel? Come in please?”

Luke packs his bags back up, slips the gun into a holster underneath his jacket and repacks his bags before heading back to the restaurant. He looks down the road (Rolls Spot Hidden).

Bo is sitting with Stephanie in the State Trooper Cruiser hears the following. In Sidney a patrolman calls in from his car. “Help! Anyone Help! The fire is out of control… the entire fire department is gone, just fucking gone. The station house… there was blood everywhere…. No one left alive. The city is fucking crazy…. Everyone is out of control….. Holy shit! I can’t get through the crowd. Their all over the hood, climbing on it. Banging on the windows…. I can’t get through….” Bo and Stephanie can overhear what sounds like snarling or moaning coming from the background. “Oh shit… oh shit…. They’re smashing the window in….. aaaaarrrrghhhhh……” then the radio cuts off.

From Kimball, they get a dispatch. “This is Kimball County Police HQ calling all units….. Come in if you’re out there…. This is Kimball County Police HQ calling all units… Is anyone out there?”

There is also a State Trooper. “This is State Trooper Joe Barring. I’m heading up I-80 Southeast of Sidney…. Is there anyone out there?”

Bo and Stephanie also see Willie, Tisha and Thomas leave the diner and head towards one of the news vans. Luke also sees the news crew leave the diner.

In the Junkyard-

Mitch and Wallace continue to look for the truck part. They’ve inspected a couple derelict trucks but still no luck. Mitch is wondering who the hiding kid is.

Buddy has taken interest in something and is running through the Junkyard, heading northwest.

(Mitch Roll Spot Hidden???)

In the diner-

Dave the Trucker is still talking with Boss Hammond, although no one is quite sure about what.

Alice is waiting to tell Rosie that she’ll be right back. She wants to know how long it will take to repair her car that broke down last night.

Dr. Haussmann continues to work on her laptop and doesn’t notice as Rosie fills her cup. Rosie is curious to find out what they are working on but knows better than to bother them.

Kimberly, the pharmacist says, “Hey, why don’t you try a radio station?”

Lynne looks at her sharply and continues to flirt with Randall.

Ashley is taking Robert and Duke’s order. Beth is eating her toast and eggs, and is looking at Robert, wondering if she should make conversation but quite sure that she’s got no place she really needs to get to at the moment.

Charlie returns to work to see Thomas leaving and grumbles, “Fuck, now I have to cook and clean dishes?”

He looks out over the crown as Baldwin walks back into the diner. Charlie sees that Baldwin is carrying a heavy wrench behind his back.

Horst sees Baldwin return, and perhaps should worry about what Baldwin is hiding, but he’s still annoyed to be waiting. Flip is sitting away from Baldwin and has to turn nearly around in the small booth to see him. It’s too difficult a turn given the cramped conditions of the booth. it would be a difficult thing for him to take the switchblade out of his pocket even if he did.

When the black man enters the diner, Horst says, “ Well, the nigga returns like a good slave should.”

“I said you should mind your manners.” Says Baldwin.

“Who the fuck are you to talk down to me, boy” Says Horst.

“The Mother fucka that killed you, bitch.” Says Baldwin as he brings out the wrench and swings.

Horst is incapable of moving out of the way but raises his arms for the blow. The first fall of the heavy steal wrench falls on Horst's arm, breaking it. Horst cries out in pain as Flip, shocked with the sudden attack is stunned by the sudden attack.

Horst arm falls limply and he tries to duck, his other arm sweeps the table, pushing dishes and cups off the table, including a plate into Flip's lap, that crash and shatter on the floor. Horst tries to escape under the table, but the effort is only partially successful. A second blow connects with Horst's neck rather than his head. Horst is a big, strong man, but so is Baldwin.

Horst's body goes limp and begins to slide under the table. With one arm he tries to bring himself up and looks up as Baldwin delivers a third blow across Horst's face that breaks his nose in shatter of blood that sprays onto Flip’s face, momentarily blinding him.

Horst slides down the rest of the table, his face a mess of blood.

Baldwin brings back his heavy wrench to deliver a blow and turns to Flip, but holds back the blow. “What are you gonna do Nigga. Give me reason, muthafucka, just any reason at all. You want this like that fucker did. Do ya? Well?”

Flip roll sanity.

Inside the restaurant, everyone is momentarily stunned, and Flip can see the two young guys who were sitting at the counter come across to grab Baldwin. Behind them Hammond comes stepping out of the office with Dave following. Hammond is saying, "What the hell is going on here?"

Rita in the gift shop watches dumbstruck as Baldwin beats Horst with the wrench. She turns her gaze to one of the displays.

The garage -

"Yeah, we're gonna have to drain the lines. I'm cleaning the fuel pump first, almost done with that." Bob Larkin answers "I'm Bob, Bob Larkin. Thanks for the help."

"Gary." the black man answers as they shake hands "I know a thing or two about engines. Been workin' on 'em for the better part of my life."

"Good, I can use all the help I can get." Bob says "I can probably fix it all solo, but it would take forever... And time is pretty much the one thing we can't spare."

"Another problem is fuel." he continues "I don't think we'll make it without refueling unless we recover all the fuel we can. I hope we can filter the dirt out."

"Can you finish up on the fuelpump? I'll go prep the helo for the other repairs." Bob asks with the intent to see how skilled Gary is before letting him loose on the chopper.

Outside the diner -

(Spot Hidden: 44 roll vs 55 skill)

"What the..." Luke mumbles as he spots something down the road.

Thinking his slowly aging eyes might be deceiving him, he returns to his pickup & grabs his binoculars for a closer look.

The garage -

"Helicopters? Nuthin', Boss." Dave replies to Earl "But an engine is an engine & mechanics are mechanics. I'm willing to learn."

In the Motel 8-

Ms. Foo couldn't get through on the phone, so she gave Azadeh her change and scribbled a note to herself detailing the transaction so she could enter it once the system was back up. Before Azadeh left, Mr. Foo returned to the lobby. He was still a little stunned by what he had learned, but he knew he had to take charge of the situation. The Lathan family emerged from its room, the children still rubbing their eyes.

"Please, don't leave just yet," he told Azadeh. Then he addressed all of his guests. "Why are all of you still standing? Please, have some seats. That's what the couches and chairs are for." This was better than telling them they'd better sit down, or they'd know he had alarming news while they were still standing up. He didn't want any of them to faint and fall down. He motioned his wife to the chair behind the front desk.

Once everyone was seated, Mr. Foo continued. "I was able to reach some friends of mine on another line and found out more of what's been going on. I'm afraid it isn't good. Events like the fire in Sidney aren't limited to the local area. There are massive riots in major cities, and the authorities are unable to deal with them."

"Is this happening all over the country?" asked Felice, in shock.

"All over the world, it seems. The trouble seems to be concentrated in populated areas. China has been hit especially hard, and it has quite a large population." Not as large as it did yesterday, of course. Mr. Foo had mixed feelings about the news about China. As much as he hated the Communist government in China and wanted to see it lose its power, the Chinese were still his people and China was still the land of his birth. He didn't want them to suffer; the Reds had caused far too much suffering as it was.

Ms. Foo gasped. "World go crazy!" she exclaimed.

"The world was already crazy. Now, though, everyone can see it." He switched to Chinese and rubbed his wife's shoulders. "It will be all right, dear heart. When we were children we survived the Japanese invasion and the Communist revolution. We'll survive this too."

"Are we safe here?" asked Bud.

"For now," said Mr. Foo, returning to English, "but that may not last long. I would recommend that nobody head out on their own. We need to organize and come up with a plan, but we won't be able to stay here too much longer."

'Why not?" asked Ms. Foo. "We not in city."

"No, there aren't many people in the immediate area, but Warren Air Force Base is. Governments around the world are in disarray and growing increasingly unstable. It may only be a matter of time before someone panics and launches their nukes, if only to try to beat the other side to the punch. If that happens, this whole area will become a barren radioactive waste."

This situation reminded him a little of when he was a young guerilla in the Kuomintang. Too young, but in 1949 they were on the ropes and couldn't be picky. The Reds had been beating them back on all fronts, and in the end Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek had been forced to evacuate his people from the mainland to Taiwan. He and Ms. Foo, who had been his girlfriend at the time, had gone with them. But this time was worse. This was happening all over the world. Was there any place to which to flee?

In the parking lot-
"This is Trooper Bo Richards," Bo spoke into the radio. "I'm at the T-Bone truck stop on I-80 between Kimball and Sidney. Over." He pulled up near the news van and rolled down his window to address the news crew.

"If you guys are thinking about heading out on the road," said Bo, "you ought to reconsider. It's extremely dangerous out there. Sidney is on fire and completely overrun by mobs. I've been hearing similar reports all across Nebraska."

"He's right," called Stephanie. "We should all stay put for now."

OCC- I am looking to give SuaSide some moderation duties to help keep this thread clean.

IC-

In the garage-

Boss Earl nods, "Well keep an eye out an if it gets complicated let me know. We might be shifting away from Wallace's truck to that chopper. If Wallace gives you any shit, let me know or send him to me. Now where the hell is Mitchell. I bet he's fucking off again."

Bob and Gary discuss repairs and it seems that Gary is quite adept at repairs. While unfamiliar with more complicated mechanics, he can perform most functions. Also, Bob has the simple manual in the helicopter.

In the parking lot.

Tisha says, "Willie, I'll drive. Give Thomas some basic instructions on the audio gear." Then to Thomas Tisha says, "Hopefully we'll get you back here by tonight. Depends how work goes in Omaha. If we go past 6 pm, we'll pay you double and let's not tell that bitch in the convenience store about it, ok?"

sung_hi_lee_flower.jpg

Tisha
They are in the truck and about to pull out when Bo pulls up to the van.

Tisha shakes her head. "If things are bad up ahead officer, than I appreciate your escort, but that's where the news is. Not here. We're off to Omaha on reports of mob violence. It's what we're looking for. So unless you have a warrant to arrest us or otherwise detain us, we're going forward."

Luke peering down the road towards Sidney can see something moving. He takes out his binoculars, but the image is distorted. Still it seems like people, a few at least, walking down the highway in their direction.
12587401_7f656726ca_m.jpg

He also sees Sean who has now reached Jim Kerr at the helicopter. Jim Kerr has been talking with the military base which insists that they cannot deploy a helicopter to assist. The State Police helicopter is a possibility, but it does not have enough fuel to reach the Truck Stop and is looking for a place to land.

In the Hotel-

Azadeh asks, "Is this some kind of attack? A terrorist strike?"

Felice sits down and says nothing. Perhaps she's happy that she doesn't have to barter her jewelry. "Can we stay here?"

Mr. Lathan is perhaps the most worried. The kids take seats and seem shocked and Mr. Foos sees Mrs Lathan shake something into her hand and then pop it in her mouth. Mr. Lathan begins to try the television in a panic and seeing little result, says, "Is there a radio? What abotu the radio? Maybe the radio is working?"

Mr. Foo rolls psychology-

In the parking lot -

"Hey officer!" Luke yells out "There are people down there. On foot..."

He points down the I-80. The reflections of the sun in that direction makes it hard to see, but slowly a group figures are forming on the horizon.

OCC- Mr. Foo succeeded at his Psychology roll (56% roll vs. 82% skill: http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=501016 )

IC-
In the parking lot-
"I know I can't stop you," Bo told Tisha. "I needed to warn you, though. I don't know if you realize just how bad it is. I'm sorry I can't escort you, but I've got some other people I need to make sure get to Omaha and we're waiting for the chopper to get fixed. If we can't fly out of here we'll have to take the highway, and maybe I'll catch up with you on the road. Be careful, and turn back if it gets too hairy."

As he listened to the police radio to see if anyone responded, he squinted down I-80 towards Sidney with his hand shading his eyes to look for the people Luke had told him about. The morning sun was in his eyes and the road was backlit by the distant blaze, but now that Luke had pointed them out he thought he saw some figures moving towards the truck stop. "Maybe they're fleeing from the fire and rioting in Sidney," he said to the hunter. "Are they just walking down the middle of the road? I know there's no traffic coming from Sidney, but they ought to move over to the shoulder."

"There's Jim and Sean," said Stephanie, looking at the helicopter. "I'm going to fill them in quick and see how they're doing, and then I'll go get Dr. Hausmann so she can seal the deal with Earl. See you inside." She got out of the car, shut the door, and trotted over to the chopper.

In the Motel 8-
"I try radio," said Ms. Foo. She turned on the radio on the desk and turned the tuning knob, searching for a station that was still on the air.

"I do not know if it is some sort of attack or terrorist strike," said Mr. Foo. "It is possible, but this seems to be affecting every country in the world. I'll have to talk some more with my friends after we decide what to do." He puzzled over what could possibly cause people to go berserk in such large numbers. He considered the possibility that last night's meteor shower was an indicator that an asteroid or comet was on a collision course with the Earth and that word had leaked out and caused mass panic, but he had heard nothing to even suggest that such was the case, so it seemed unlikely. Could it be some sort of new disease? Mind control? All of these ideas seemed far-fetched, but he was at a loss to find any reasonable explanation.

"We could stay here for the time being," Mr. Foo told Felice. "Don't worry about paying for your room. That's not important any more. Right now this place is safer than the cities, but if cooler heads don't prevail someone might launch their missiles and the other side would retaliate. I don't think we should stay here any longer than necessary."

"Where can we go?" asked his wife.

"Somewhere away from cities and other populated areas. That will reduce the risk from both the rampaging mobs and nuclear weapons. I'm thinking we should head north. The Dakotas and parts of Canada are more sparsely populated. Ideally we would want a large vehicle that could fit all of us, like a bus. A tractor-trailer could work in a pinch. Failing that, we can form a convoy of vehicles. I'd prefer vehicles that are fuel efficient and have larger capacity tanks. Refueling won't be easy.

"Anyone who wants to stay is welcome to, but we should all pack our things and be ready to leave at a moment's notice. We'll need food, water, medical supplies, tools, weapons, and ammunition most of all. Those of you with vehicles should fill your gas tanks at the truck stop while you can. Maybe we can coordinate with the people there to form an evacuation plan. Someone should let them know what's going on if they don't already know."

I-80 on the way to Sidney-

Tisha pulls the van out side the road as Willie begins to explain to Thomas how the audio gear works. Tisha first goes West on I-80 until she finds a suitable turn off and then proceeds East.

She quickly passes the T-Bone and the Foo's Motel 8 and is proceeding towards Sidney. Thomas and Willie are in the back when they hear Tisha say, "Holy shit."

"What?" Asks Willie.

"Looks like a big fire in Sidney. Maybe an explosion. There are people walking away along the highway. I can see lots of cars ahead are stopped. The road looks blocked up." She says. "Better get the camera ready. We can do a report from here."

Willie asks, "Maybe we should call up Cheyenne to see what they want to do?"

"Yeah." Says Tisha still driving.

Willie tries the phone. "It's dead."

"Well maybe its a temprory break down. Let's roll a quick bit here and then see if we can get going."

Willie looks at Thomas. "Ok, get ready."

(Thomas gets a quick 15% at Operating Audio Visual gear).

In the parking lot

Luke gets a better look at them. People, stumbling about along the highway. They seem dazed and confused, their clothes in tatters. Some appear injured.

At the Hotel-

Mr. Foo realizes that Mr. Lathan is about to panic. Ms. Lathan seems to have tranquilizer herself. The kids are doing alright. Felice and Azadeh seem to be worried but otherwise fine. Bud seems the most relaxed and unflappable of the group.

The garage -

Bob leaves the fuel pump in Gary's hands, confident that he'll do an adequate job. He goes to the chopper to grab its manual and to prepare it for the other necessary repairs.

In the parking lot -

"Hey, officer." Luke says to Bo while peering through the binoculars "They look wounded. Shit, look at how they're walking... They gotta be badly hurt or in shock or something. I think you'd better find out if we have anyone with medical experience here, or grab your first aid kit. It really aint lookin' pretty..."

The garage -

Dave continues to drain the brake fluid from Walace's truck while whistling Auto Pilot from Queens of the Stoneage.

OCC - Welsh, is it possible to remove the autocorrection on the RP board? Luke is supposed to be not so well educated & i presume he speaks less then perfect english, but thats kinda hard if the forum automatically changes what i write into "{I've been dialectized into moron-speek! HELP!}"

OCC- Not really SuaSide. Sorry.

Also, there is more going on with the helicopter- Does anyone want to play that out?

OCC- I also found the autocorrect annoying when writing dialogue for Mongo in Systematic Annihilation, but I got around it by using a different misspelling. As for the helicopter, I was just about to get involved with that.

IC-
In the parking lot-
"I know just the person," said Bo. "I'll go pick her up." He drove across the parking lot.

Stephanie reached the helicopter, where Jim and Sean were talking. "Hey, guys!" she said. "Good news! We found a mechanic to help Bob out, and I think I've convinced Earl and his crew to help us with the chopper."

"How did you swing that?" asked Jim.

"I turned on the charm - and I offered him an awful lot of the taxpayers' money. The only problem is he doesn't think I can foot the bill, so I'm going to have to get Dr. Hausmann to have a talk with him. We could be up in a few hours."

"Good job! That black truck driver also said he'd help out. Say, there's another helicopter in the area being flown by a lady state trooper, but she's almost out of fuel."

"Tell her to land here. Maybe we can transfer the fuel from this chopper and she can fly us to Omaha."

"She doesn't have enough fuel to get all the way here, though."

"Well, perhaps there's a place she can land nearby. Then we can bring her enough fuel in jerry cans from the garage to get her the rest of the way. Bo should talk to her, since he's a state trooper too and he knows the area."

"You're on a first name basis with him already?"

Stephanie blushed. She turned to go find Bo, but she didn't need to look far. Bo had just parked near the chopper. She ran up to his window and they filled each other in.

Bo got out of the car and went with her back to the helicopter. "Those people on the highway seem to have made it all the way from Sidney, so I guess they can wait a few more minutes. The State Police chopper could run out of fuel any time now." He had felt bad about not being able to assist his fellow troopers, but now he finally had a chance to at least help one.

"Don't forget that those people could be some of the rioters," said Stephanie. "They could be dangerous."

"Good point." Bo spoke to Jim Kerr. "Mind if I use your radio?"

"Be my guest," he said, passing him the headset.

Bo put it on. "This is State Trooper Bo Richards at the T-Bone truck stop on I-80 between Kimball and Sidney to the State Police helicopter. There's a broken down government chopper here, and its passengers need to get to Omaha urgently. I think we can help each other out. I might be able to find you a place to land nearby and bring you enough fuel to get here. Come in, please." He tried to think of a safe place for her to set down.

In the Motel 8-
Mr. Foo approached Mrs. Lathan and addressed her. "I noticed you taking a pill just now. Are those tranquilizers by any chance?"

"Why do you ask?" she said.

"It's just that I think your husband could use one now." He looked to Mr. Lathan. "Please try to remain calm, sir. If we keep our heads on straight we can get through this okay." Then he turned to his wife. "Let's get the other guests and Ellen in here so we can all discuss our plans."

Ms. Foo went to the window and looked outside. Jenny was still outside, but there was no sign of Alex. The Englishman had not yet come back out of his room, so he was probably still packing. "Missy Jenny, please to come inside," she called.

Next Ms. Foo went to room 8, where Ellen Cody was cleaning. "Do you need something?" she asked.

"Please to help me gather the guests into the lobby. Cleaning can wait."

Back in the lobby, Mr. Foo was thinking aloud. "We can't go directly north, because that road leads to the PMS compound. We can't go east, either, because of the fire and chaos in Sidney. We could take I-80 west to Kimball, then cut north on Route 71. After that we'd want to head east to Route 385 and take it north. Now that I think about it, there are some huge missile bases in the Dakotas as well, so we'll need to give those a wide berth. We could cut through eastern Wyoming and Montana instead. They're also low population areas and there's not much there to nuke. From there it should be a clear run to Saskatchewan, Canada."

In the Motel 8

Bud was siting on the couch listening to what Mr.Foo had to say. He watched the reaction of those in the room as Mr. Foo delivered what could easily qualify as grim news. Most of the folks seemed to take it well enough, except Mr. Lathan. "That one might cause trouble" Bud said to himself. Bud knew a couple of things about crisis situations and he knew very well that panic spreads fast in moments like this one. They had to do something to calm Mr. Lathan down before he would get a chance to do something stupid. Foo's idea with the pill seemed as a good enough solution; "If that doesn't work we might have to do it the old fashioned way and knock some sense into him" Bud thought. It seemed that Mr. Foo had already come up with something that sounded like a plan, but there still were a lot of details to work out. Fuel for starters: in a crisis prices would rise a lot and profiteering would bloom. Then where would they get a bus... but he was getting way ahead of himself. He needed to focus on the present.
"Excuse me, Mr. Foo, but where did you find all of this out?" Bud said. "How did you get in touch with those friends you spoke about, I thought the internet was down and I suspect the phones aren't doing any better?"

In the news van

Thomas was going over the instructions in his head, just to make sure he wouldn't fuck it up. "After all this could be that once in a life time opportunity" he thought.
I'm ready! Thomas said as he got up. He opened the slide door of the van and got out. The view was grim. Crashed cars littered the highway and some were on fire blanketing the road with smoke and making it rather hard to see clearly. On the horizon more smoke, "That looks bad, really bad." he said.
He noticed some people in the distance walking away from the city, well, it was more like limping, they seemed injured. Thomas turned to Willie and said "What now man?"

The chopper -

"Hey, brake it up, brake it up! My chopper aint no mall to hang around in." Bob says with a smile as he reaches his chopper "Some people have to actually do some work, so make some room, kids."

Bob grabs the helicopter manual to later show to Gary & any other guy with a mechanical affinity that turns up to help. He then pops the side pannels of the chopper & starts preparing for the other work that is needed.

The diner -

Luke sees the news van closing in on the wounded people & decides to let them sort it out. He informed a state trooper & other people were already on the scene. His civic duty was fulfilled as far as he was concerned. He then moves to walk into the diner.
