If Quake was done today...

The average individual going to primary school in 2011 has tested lower on all fundamental skills, compared to 2001...just imagine what how pathetic the children of these turkeys will test in 2031.

Source?

It was on my local TV news - they compared the results from 2001 to 2011, and the numbers where down on all the numeracy and literacy tests. Sorry I cant find the actual report.

The first thing I noted when watching it and make'd me scream "what the hell" was...the enemies have health bars!
So players nowdays are so dumb they need health bars on enemies? Rolling Eyes

Health bars in simili-RPG games are clearly a product of modern, dumbed down game design.

While I do agree modern shooter design holds hands way too damn much, all these comments towards people being universally dumber now than 10 years ago because video games have taken a different turn are childish.

OK, if you want me to be all PC and that, health bars on a FPS polute the interface heavelly.
And health bars are a form of holding the player hands.

"Shoot this guy, not that guy, it has more health".

Oh man. I've yet to play any Quake game for real, if Arena doesn't count.

Man, I just wish people'd go back to Counter Strike. Most of the people who play on there are pirates because they don't feel like paying for Battlefield or CoD (well, and for a good reason - come on, $60... for a game that you played last year?). It does take away from the experience because they either cheat all the time, or they suck at playing.

I think that ironsights is a way of cheating, it's so easy to press your RMB and just take off anyone in your way with a simple headshot. Now try firing from your hip, bet those console kids will go crazy controlling their bursts (of anger). I know it's realism and crap, but... seriously?

Also, pretty sure Call of Duty and linear games will die out with the invention of totally 3D virtual reality machines, people will want to explore the new world, not follow dots or arrows.

I was referencing the ability to use ironsights. OK, I could paraphrase that to 'more freedom', but hell, can't use that in the same sentence with Battlefield and CoD either ;)

hmm no I would simply call it "authenticity" because iron sights are the new shitz today which every shooter needs. Regardless if it fits or not - Day of Defeat source with ironsights ? seriously ?

It is a very very easy by game devs to give their game "more weight" like HEY LOOK OVER HERE ! YOU CAN NOW USE IRONSIGHTS SUUUPER REALISTIC GAME ! It is with the right game pretty fun which I admit. Like in Crysis. But if the effect is overdone then it is pretty useless.

Well, Crysis was a great shooter, at least for me. I still like eye candy. And the story was at least something, I mean, sure, it sucked, but for an action title it goes quite well to be honest.

Counter Strike offers quick and skilled gameplay. Sort of like Doom and Quake (especially Arena).

I liked Crysis very much.

Its just the diversity in gaming which seems to have gone down the toilet quite fast. Not that there are not games out which you cant enjoy but when compared to the "golden age" of gaming you had less titles (block buster titles) but much more diverstiy, from C&C to shoters and RPGs. Now today it seems all is a form of "mish mash" where a "good" game has to be some RPG, Shooter, Strategy, realism(!) but still arcade! In other words Mass Effectish. Or Dragonawesome 2 where the AAA button has to always cause the explosions of bodies.

It seems to me like the artistic creativity in making games today is very limited which is somewhat understandable as experiments always mean to take risks - with some limitations of course. Now a studio which is pumping several 100 million dollar in a project (for the marketing alone of CoD or Battlefield ...) wants to see at least 3 million sold copies to call it just a "win" (not even a HUGE success) while smaller teams in the past had more freedom I guess already more then 400 000 sold copies of Fallout 1 on its release would have been already a huge success. Thats why I guess it is so hard to see games like Planescape done again which actually try to NOT fall into the Mass market but still deliver a game on high quality. I mean even for its time Planescape was seen as special. Extremly mature game when it comes to the story and quests while most games today are about THE CHOSEN ONE! Using his voice to kill infinite dragoooooolooooLOOOLs! ... heh.

Chosen Ones have been around since PacMan. Only non-Chosen One games are strategy ones.

I'm supposing even Operation Flashpoint has some point of dominance in its gameplay, I didn't feel very challenged after digging myself into a ditch and killing those Soviets.

That actually looks sweet. You've got to love Counter Strike, huh? :)

On a side note, EA has done a good job too:
