Three different sites picked up the bit on response to fans from Emil Pagliarulo in the Next Gen interview and ran with it. I thought it was interesting in that none of them seem all that impressed and their reactions are very varied. The other two got their news from ps3.qj.net:
So Bethesda's focusing on making a game that they want to play. He later said that because of the Fallout 3's momentum, and now that its release is on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC is inevitable, they really couldn't worry anymore about what fans are complaining about.

As holders of one of the most anticipated franchises in gaming history, Bethesda Game Studios had a lot going for them when they first announced Fallout 3 was in development. That quickly died, however, when they revealed more specific details of the game and were accused of butchering the franchise's legacy.

But still the studio took the bad rap and now are poised to complete the less RPG, more FPS Fallout 3, ignoring fan outcries altogether. This wouldn't be the first time Bethesda's pulled that trick on thousands of players when the studio performed a similar handstand during the bickering over The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

"You have to make the game that you’re making and know that it’s a good one and continue with that," he said. But seeing as there's a lot of outspoken gamers still bitter at Fallout 3, we might see another Unreal Tournament 3 misfire in the making. Stay tuned for more developments.
Evil Avatar:
Actually I am in the same opinion as many other roaring Fallout fans out there. Thinking that they actually butchering the Fallout franchise a little.

But, and that's a big, BUT. I know I will love and enjoy the game, but it will not be the same fallout game I was hoping for. Kinda like Fallout Tactics.
Destructoid:
Bethesda has ignored the screams of Fallout fans in the production of a game that resembles an FPS more than an RPG. The roleplaying elements will be there, but it can't be argued that the game is going to be a very different beast from the one that players were expecting. Bethesda, however, has recognized a need to be ruthless and explained exactly why it's not listening to the outraged war cry of a thousand angry gamers.
(...)
At the end of the day, Bethesda is responsible for a sequel that was always going to make people unhappy, no matter how well made the game may or may not be. It's simply impossible to give everybody exactly what they want and the studio clearly knows this. Sometimes what fans want is what's best for themselves, not the franchise, and sometimes it's just not worth trying to cater to everybody, because once you start attempting to satisfy everyone, you end up pleasing none. Like Emil said, you just have to make what you're making. Let the fans answer with their wallets, and the fallout for Fallout be as it may.
Thanks Mungrul.

Except they won't. There'll be a lot of people who will buy it but have never played FOs. Fans or just people who came across Fallout because it's another 'amazing game from the makers of the best rpg evar- Oblivion'? You decide!

Btw I like that reaction.

Wow, gaming media actually write something intelligent about Fallout 3? I'm pleasantly surprised :) .

Eh, I find their stance very disagreeable.

Answer with their wallets?
That makes no sense considering the game is being advertised to the non-fans that outnumber the fans. Alienating a devoted userbase is just plain rude.

the answering with their wallets comment is indeed pretty retarded since Beth is pretty much assured of a commercial success, regardless of the original FO fans.

besides, i suspect quite a few FO fans will buy it anyway, to see for themself... so Beth well even get a buck out of the "unhappy" FO fan...

Still, I wonder if this is the start of something bigger?
Could Fallout 3 be experiencing a media backlash such as Bioshock experienced?
Of course, the difference here is that the game hasn't even been released yet.
Maybe the industry is finally wising up to the marketing.

See, there are people that like to thin of themselves as Fallout fans, but really, they have no idea what are they talking about. Slap "Fallout" on the box and they will be happy.

Fallout was always about the settings, the decisions, and the cynical humor that bordered on the ludicrous. Drinking out of toilet doesn't sound out of character for the series.
Heard that Tim Cain? Take your "P&P" thing with you and go away.!

Iam disapointed. I seriously hope too this game fails. This project another game like fallout tactics. Its not true Fallout with worst pathetic game design... and terrible storyline.

Fallout 3 will enjoy sales that are not poor, but hardly spectacular. The game will be too unknown to the newcomers, and the majority of buyers will be the "relaxed Fallout fans".

Bethesda will be disappointed and will point the finger at the hardcore fans who "never gave the game a chance".

A few months later we will have a Gamasutra post-mortem describing how demoralized the development staff has been thanks to NMA and RPGCodex in the last weeks of development, as well as detailing an alleged suicide attempt by one of the employees who almost suffocated himself by putting on a real-size replica of Bethesda Power Armor and being unable to either take it off or reach for a phone.

Ahh! And we will all celebrate and rejoice over our victory :D

Eh, thinking about the future is depressing. After Fallout 3 has been released, after the hype has died down, after the game has been marked down $20... We still end up right where we have been time and time again: Waiting for a proper sequel.

If Fallout 3 is a commercial success or a total failure, we still lose. :| ..again.

It would be a victory if Bethesda's supposed fate would serve as a learning-by-proxy experience to a smarter company, who would quickly snatch the Fallout license from them and make something closer to Van Buren for Fallout 4.

The reality of the matter is that in case of a flop no one is going to buy Fallout, the license will be known as cursed and even Bethesda might not do another sequel, instead purely using the property for MMOs

Some would argue that is a better fate than what Fallout has now, but it's still hardly a victory.

Fallout tactics was amazing, i'll probobly end up buying it when i see it for like 50$ or maybe a bit less, not going to pay full price for it. I'm hoping it will be like deus ex 2 should of been and maybe it will be decent. I'll probobly end up with the 360 version seeing as my pc won't be able to run that

Given the current state of the gaming industry, the Fallout franchise would probably be better off if they had left if for dead after POS.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but after Van Buren was cancelled in favor of trying to pry the money from the purses of a bunch of console kiddie's mothers, there wasn't much chance that anyone would ever see a sequel that would even be vaguely recognizeable as the Fallout games we know and love.

I don't hate Bethesda for making their own game with the Fallout IP. I would love to do the same, although I have a feeling mine would be somewhat closer to the originals than theirs.

I don't even hate them for their lies, because you pretty much have to lie to sell people things these days, and their job is to make money first and games second.

It's the fact that they had my hopes up for a sequel and decided instead to deal the final crushing blow to the wounded soldier that is the Fallout franchise and tried to brush all criticism of this act aside in the name of "progress".

that's what makes me hate them.
:)

I doubt that would happen.

I've long given up on Van Buren. The only way we'll ever see anything even remotely close to it is if a dedicated group of fans decides to do a Van Buren mod to an existing game.

Van Buren then, what are we missing to make it work, we have the design docs, the story plot, we even have a tech demo don't we?

All we would need is a re-naming spree and someone with a hell of a lot more free time than I do :P

I'm sure others have posed this question in 8 years, but why doesn't someone pick up the pieces and try to build it themselves, there's a myriad of modders out there trying to piece together their mods in a not so mod friendly program, why not focus those energies into making a system that's mod-friendly AND fallout-based.

We have a road map, all we need to do is traverse it don't we, they are doing it with CoH, so it's not too big of a stretch for others to try it with other games is it?

I'm fully prepared to get laughed at for this, I know how hopefuls get treated when they ask for programmers or the like for their projects here, but I'm just curious as to if anyone's actually broken out the 'board and tried to start it from scratch following the design docs?

this isn't such a big thing, but it took quite an interesting spin.

i doubt that this reaction of the "game press" will influence the number of games sold in the end. At the end of the day, it's just free publicity. Those who care about the content of this news message are already interested in the game anyway and it won't keep anyone from buying or not buying.

what i think will be much more interesting is the next reaction from bethsoft. im curious how they will deal with this new situation.

You just need a few talented coders and writers interested in working for free. It means that there are two possibilities:
1. They start doing it and never finish due to RL.
2. They'll never start it.
