Gawd brother, how can you not remember it was the lead character designer? It's like the most awful goof about them... :\

Because for some odd reason, I'm not obsessed with Bethesda's staff or their goofs.

Gary's a pretty cool guy. He's had a history of talking to and listening to fans. I used to talk to him sometimes in the only channel on irc.m0use.net back when Bethesda as a whole cared about their more devoted fans. m0use.net lived in the basement of Bethesda's offices and hosted a bunch of Daggerfall modding sites; it died around the time Morrowind came out and turned out to be a big disappointment.

The campy humor, the grotesque action, and the integrated pop culture, as well as Pip Boy (can't leave THAT out!) are what allow FO to stand out from other titles. I agree, without these, it is simply NOT FO.

Asides from specifically mentioning Pip Boy, this description could as well apply to Monkey Island games.

Grotesque action in Monkey Island? You must have had the Too Hot for PC Edition.

"Grotesque" commonly means strange, fantastic, ugly or bizarre. Remember the insult sword fights ? They do qualify.

Even if that's a bit of a stretch, replace Monkey Island with Sam & Max, or a few other SCUMM games. The point is... a lot of these guys seem to focus on "atmosphere" which in the end has nothing to do with key gameplay features that actually did set Fallout apart, such as the way it handled dialogue.

Plus, I get the feeling he is thinking of Vault Boy, not PIPBoy... PIPBoy is nothing of much importance. It's just a personal mini computer used to store info and stuff... Many games have something like that... Nobody cares about it. I wouldn't care if it wasn't included in a Fallout game...

Explains a lot about the vault suits and super mutants, no?

I presumed that the baggy vault suits were just ripped out of Van Buren?

Still, if you think the Superutants look bad, then think of the horrible, rippling-muscled, spandex-clad, pseudo-superhero, vault dwellers they'd have produced if skin-tight vault suits were de rigueur...
