Interplay pays up

Didn't Interplay make a deal with Bethesda that they would be able to make a Fallout MMO if Bethesda approved or something? How do they expect to hire anyone for that project (Or any project, really) with business practices like these?

There's people for everything. But I think their plan was to have something big behind their name when fallout hits the shelves so that they can tell interested parties to invest in this huge success.

Let's just see how well that turns out now...

Bethesda had Interplay backed into a corner, and offered them a deal they couldn't possibly come through on, essentially allowing BethSoft to grab the MMO rights from Interplay's corpse when the company finally implodes.

In an interesting twist, as part of the agreement Interplay now acts as a licensee of the IP as it continues to ramp up production on its own Fallout-themed massively multiplayer game, first announced in 2004 alongside Bethesda's sequel, and shown via internal documents as recently as December to have a projected $75 million dollar budget and launch date of 2010.

In a special clause of the purchase agreement, Interplay agrees that "full-scale development of its FALLOUT MMOG will commence within 24 months of the Effective Date of this Agreement" and that "Interplay will have secured financing for the FALLOUT MMOG in an amount no less than $30 million" within that time frame or forfeit its license rights for the MMO.

There is no possible way anyone is going to give Interplay $30 million. None. Investors would deal with Bethesda because they actually know how to run a business well, and not screw over their employees / business partners in the course of making a profit.

Since Bethesda really doesn't do MMOs, and doesn't seem to have much interest in pursuing any, it's safe to say that the most likely course of action would be that Interplay continues to circle the drain, Bethesda grabs the rights and locks them away in a safe place. This deal allows them to get the rights to something they'd like to have as the license-holder for the franchise as a whole, but doesn't require them to actually pay for something they're unlikely to use anytime soon.

Personally, I'd rather have no Fallout MMO than a crap one.

VICTORY!!!!! I love seeing the ol' saying "What goes around, comes around." in action.

More importantly, I love seeing cunts like Herve get slammed. I hope he dies tomorrow in the worst imaginable way possible.

and it shows that their business practices towards their employees and creditors are a lot better than Herves.

Not much of an accomplishment.

I couldn't have said it any better.

Fortunately a Fallout MMO is currently the cocaine-induced delusion of one seedy little man who wouldn't be able to run a lemonade stand, let alone a game company.
And when he loses those rights to Bethesda, hopefully it'll stay that way.

Eh, I don't think they'll let the franchise rest. Oblivion's already like a MMORPG for people that can't access the internet, so why wouldn't they try their hand at a FO:OL? Oh wait, that's not what they're used to, so they wouldn't do that . I'm sure when it came down to the money, Bethesda would magically be able to do anything.

I think FO:OL is pretty much a pipe dream, sure I'd like to play it, sure I'd like to play World of Warcraft as well, but I wont. The idea of buying a game and then paying extra if I want to use it kind of repels me.

Full-blown AIDS or just a latent HIV infection? ;)

The odds are we're going to see a Fallout MMORPG at some point, somewhere down the road, but I have no reason to believe that BethSoft is going to put a priority on producing one. They prefer single player games, and have wisely resisted the urge to fall into the online trap.

The rush to make everything into a MMORPG in recent years has been incredibly annoying to me on a personal level, as being able to buy a game, get 40+ hours out of it (or 100+ in the case of Morrowind) paying one time, and being able to walk away and come back at my leisure is something I value to a large degree.

We'll see Fallout 5 before we see Fallout Online.

The odds are against, actually. Everyone excepts Herve recognises that Fallout just isn't a valuable online franchise.

Some point = Any time between now and the heat death of the universe.

I honestly couldn't think of a way to make an MMO work, though.

Fargo also wanted BIS to make a Fallout MMO. And Feargus declined not because he thought it's a bad idea in general but he thought it wasn't a good idea to make it at that time.
