This post on the inXile forum offers an early call to apply for a programming job at inXile, fans of Wasteland 2 getting priority. The post also reveals the engine Wasteland 2 will be using is the highly popular Unity Engine.
If you have a passion for post-apocalytic goodness, experience working with Unity and amazing programming skills, please send your resume to jobs[at]inxile.net. We thought we’d put this out on our blog and forums first, before opening up the search further. Feel free to spread the word if you know of the perfect person.

We are looking for experienced engineers and engineering interns.
EDIT: Brian Fargo has now confirmed this, also nothing they're working with the Unity guys for Linux support, and that it won't be a browser game.

Unity is a good choice.

I did a mock up in Unity for a PARPG about a year ago, it's pretty nice.

Not really that experienced in engines so I won't comment on that, I'm sure they made the choice that suited their needs more anyway. Also, maybe I'm misremembering, but doesn't Unity make it super-easy to port on Macs? That would be a pretty nice perk for the project. Don't know about Linux though.

Well, Unity does seem like a nice choice. You can check out some games made with that engine on Kongregate if you wish.

Although, who knows how Unigine would have turned out.

@those who are wishing to qualify

I hope you perfectly understand that by developing the game you will deprive yourselves of pleasure of playing it as an end-user! :) If so, I salute your readiness to sacrifice your pleasure for our own.

Well, it's about time. More they delay decision about the engine, less time they have left for actually using it.

As for PC user, there is a lot of game engines that could finish the job, Unity is one of them, so ... ok.

Thinking about this, I'm more interested in what tools Obsidian has relating to a dialog trees (iirc), quest development and such rpg-y stuff, because it's more of an unknown then what Unity can or can't do, but is crucial for this type of game and can make or brake it.

Unity is a great choice. Price is low, the tools are easy to work with and there is a great community. It would be quite cool if the unity project (or parts of it) was released to the public in a few years time as well :) @Fargo: *nudge nudge*

well there will be some kind of mod tools available no? A good thing would be if Wasteland 2 would see the same like Never Winter Nights where the community made awesome quests and content for the game of which some even have been as good if not even better then the full game.

So Unity is a good choice? I'm asking as I've never heard of this engine before, as a gamer.

If you say it's good, then I'm fine.

Yeah, I've never heard of it before either. Or at least not until the Wasteland 2 kickstarter started and that engine was thrown around in discussions about what engine they might be using.

Anybody here an expert with that engine that could explain the pluses and minuses? Just curious. Thanks. :p

Yes. It was in fact the first engine I thought of. It has a good asset pipeline, improving its GUI options and multi-platform capabilities. Don't get distracted by the fact that its cheap licensing options mean it's been used for crappy mobile games, that doesn't mean this is all it's capable of. As long as they have source code access and support, it's all good.

inXile is not going to use its browser functionality anyway. And I did talk a little with Fargo about Unity's relatively low optimization, but the fact is it won't be a problem for WL2, since it won't be a very high-fidelity, high-requirement game.

Well, there's a game called Red Crucible 2. It crashes really badly. Hopefully though, yeah, they'll try to make sure that Wasteland 2 runs smoothly. Interested to see the actual requirements though... Hope the people at the Wasteland 2 forums don't get pissed.
