The degradation of Fallout purity all started with Fallout 2, as we now know, but I will guide you through how I see things.
We will briefly look at Fallout 1 and the Mutants.
This is your standard Mutant. The straps were added because they look cool. They have historically cobbled together whatever they can to use as armor. You can see this really take hold in Tactics though.
----
It all started by rushing Fallout 2 and letting people over develop certain places like New Reno while leaving San Fran totally empty of loot. The scattershot design of the sequel muddied the waters of the lore. Easter Eggs shifted to Wild Wasteland being the norm. Disregarding the previously discussed ghosts and pop culture stuff, let us look at Frank Horrigan. Because he is the problem with the entire series. Yes, I said it.
He was the most notable part of the game for sure.
Tactics started morphing things a lot more due to a totally different team having total control over it with little oversight. The Mutants don't look like Orcs quite yet.
Fallout Tactics is again below on the left, next to PoS. For the record the often time confusing mix up with noobs between Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel (PoS) should be resolved by a memo where we call Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout Tactics, with no exception. I always did anyway. To me this (I think) is confusing to people that did not become aware of the game until years down the line. Hell when it came out I just thought it was called Fallout Tactics. Wikipedia did not exist. Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel should only be called PoS. That is PIECE OF SHIT people.
Once again though we have a decreasing scale of shit. Fallout 76 will likely be better than PoS despite being just as retarded in concept. The difference is they have a budget. I mean who thought to market BAWLS in PoS anyway? I want to know. Fallout 76 will likely become the new black sheep when it converts a new legion of fans to like MULTIPLAYER ONLY FALLOUT.
So take that shitty PoS Mutant up above. Yes, they both look shitty. The one on the right.
PoS began the bloodthirsty Mutants trend by nearly taking them to STOP HUMAN levels.
Looks awfully Behemoth like.
This you can see is where it diverged totally to your standard ORC. Not just in design but PERSONALITY. The one pictured above is not that bad, but the shitstorm below is clearly apparent. On some level it is good that Fallout 3 has Mutants that are different. It also makes them boring.
It should be noted that the picture below is a Van Buren Mutant. Not too much different from Tactics. Btw the concept art for Tactics was pretty shitty.
People blame Tactics for minor lore flubs. What about SKYNET in Fallout 2 and the alien reference? Beastlords? People can do that without mind powers, which I might add are in several of the games, namely New Vegas. By comparison CALCULATOR is not so bad. At least it is original.
Calculator not lore friendly enough? It isn't considered AI so pretty much the design is the only thing wrong with the robots, and even then they look like some robots in old sci fi comics. Vault 0? No more absurd than Big MT or any other secret base. COUNT ON MORE OF THOSE IN THE FUTURE. Even if Obsidian made the game they would make some uber secret death laser in space that could have won the war, but was conveniently not active or some shit.
These robots were going to be in Van Buren but they were in Tactics. They are commonly cited as a reason why Tactics sucks. Does every robot need to look like Lost in Space?
These brain bots don't break canon.

That looks a lot like....
Bethesda went over all the games and borrowed ideas. They are still doing that with some Tactics 2 concept art by using it for a Fallout 4 creature. So which entry is the black sheep? I still say Tactics is the real black sheep. Hardly anybody has played it through all the way. A lot of false information is thrown around because of this.
It is silly that Tactics is not considered canon. Lyons was looking for the chapter that crashed in the Midwest for fucks sake.
