It came from beneath the sea...

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -- A species of shark rarely seen alive because its natural habitat is about 2,000 feet under the sea was captured on film by staff at a Japanese marine park this week.

The Awashima Marine Park in Shizuoka, south of Tokyo, was alerted by a fisherman at a nearby port on Sunday that he had spotted an odd-looking eel-like creature with a mouthful of needle-sharp teeth.

Marine park staff caught the 5 foot (1.6 meter) long creature, which they identified as a female frilled shark, sometimes referred to as a "living fossil" because it is a primitive species that has changed little since prehistoric times. (Watch divers swim with bizarre, ailing shark )

The shark appeared to be in poor condition when park staff moved it to a seawater pool where they filmed it swimming and opening its jaws. (Photo gallery: More pictures of this odd creature of the deep)

"We believe moving pictures of a live specimen are extremely rare," said an official at the park. "They live between 1,968 and 3,280 feet (600 and 1,000 meters) under the water, which is deeper than humans can go."

"We think it may have come close to the surface because it was sick, or else it was weakened because it was in shallow waters," the official said.

The shark died a few hours after being caught.

Frilled sharks, which feed on other sharks and sea creatures, are sometimes caught in the nets of trawlers but are rarely seen alive.

I hate to see the thing that scared this ugly bastard to the surface.

HOLY HELL!

I've seen some weird-ass freaky things in textbooks drawn from bones of prehistoric creatures and even some that live even now, but that takes the cake!

I mean...what the fuck!? The size of its head in comparison to the body which is lengthy and thin makes it look like a humongous snake with a fishtail.

Thank you Welsh.

Yeah, look at it's head, and then look at it's gills, and you can clearly see that the creature wasn't made for these pressures, so there are monsters in the seas, but we are save, cause they would have to do more than just terraform the earth to take over. And they don't have the brains for that. Or do they.

Is there no stop for human stupidity, of course the shark dies if you move it out of their natural environment, or let's see what happens to a man in vacuum, just for the h377 of it.

I read the original article a few days ago.

The thing was probably sick, that's why it died in the tank and was so close to the surface in the first place.

Also, Jarno, don't use leetspeak. It's retarded.

*gasp*

You mean he's awake now?

Damn I got used to blame the Marsh family for all the disturbances deep down... Well, we got worse problems to worry about now...

I somehow think Cthulhu is gonna bring down BethSoft for mocking his name...

Wow, imagine that as a Iron Chef (Japan!)'s secret ingredient.

I can just see Sakai complaining about getting weird seafood ingredient not used in French cooking. Maybe Chan will do a stirfry? Morimoto will probably try to make ice cream from it.

Seriously though, if this thing eats other sharks, what's suppose to hurt/eat it?
