Joystick looks at Fallout 3

Joystick magazine has taken a look at Fallout 3. Not much to tell, here's SuAside's take/extraction:
They end with lauding Beth for not taking the 'easy' way of keeping FO the same as it always was... (though you have to read some stuff between the lines, not quite always as positive)

But a few snippets of general interesting stuff:
- They mention that sneaking around will grant you no XP, only fighting will. I hope they don't mean that for missions as well.
- Apparently the pooch is nigh unkillable... minigun, flamethrower, didn't take a scratch. hopefully only for demo purposes...
- They very heavily stress the "drink radiated water to heal" crap. looks like stimpacks wont be around much? And the pipboy has a geigercounter (without needing an additional module like in the originals)
- Stressing once again: no demo for the general public

Bonus snippet: looks like Emil voiced some supermutants.

how is making an action rpg in the same mold as every other action rpg releasing in this generation 'not taking the easy way' ... ?

I really hope that comment about fighting being the only method of gaining XP is some sort of misunderstanding. Surely it has to be.

As for the other stuff, meh. I'm sure Dogmeat was on god mode for the sake of the demo. Drinking radiated toilet water is stupid, but we've known about that for a while. The no demo part sucks, but that too is common knowledge. Regarding the geiger counter, who cares? Pointless minutia.

Oh, and as for not taking the easy way out...that's pretty amusing. What else would you call it? "Not taking the easy way out" would be if Bethesda had actually made a turn-based, isometric RPG in the vein of the old games. It would have been challenging and it would've pissed off the Xbox fanbase. Even if the game didn't turn out worth a shit, I would give Bethesda a hell of a lot of credit for trying.

That's not what it says. It says you gain experience from fighting, not sneaking, and simply doesn't mention quests. We'll assume quests give XP, so that just means that killing two supermutants gives XP while sneaking past them does not. Which is just the usual stupidity of RPGs which always ends up crippling StealthBoy.

lol, Brother None, if you had told me you were going to post about it, i'd have written something decent.

i wasn't sure this was newsworthy at all.

Yeah, I meant outside of completing quests, obviously. Thing is, this leaves me wondering about the fact that you're supposed to be able to talk your way out of situations as well - so instead of fighting the two supermutants OR sneaking past them, shouldn't you be able to convince them to let you go about your business and get some XP that way as well? Or does this "only fighting gives XP" thing refer specifically to random encounters? If that's the case, then it doesn't bother me quite as much and it's only a little annoying.

With regards to supermutants in particular, I know Bethesda has mentioned time and time again that the muties are the bad guys and they want to kill you, so I wonder if talking your way past supermutants is even a remote possibility.

your right about that... thanks for the fallout 2 mod , bearguy!

but really since you have a dog and dont have a vault 13 canteen jingling on your belt. I would think your twice as stealthy . dogmeat couldlike sneak while you fight.. "THEY KILLED DOGMEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! those were the words i shouted as i fired my first gun in real life" if he couldnt die then i would just send him in and abuse it like gaming bug.

also reminds me of that bit of text from the cafe of broken dreams were a guy said someone kept dogmeat alive while in the military base... sweeet..

i think a game like borderlands will really change the sandbox/ rpg world...have you seen that stuff?

It's not oblivion with guns. I know, I know, Todd said it is, some journalists said it is oblivion with guns and that it is awesome combination but...y'know... it's just not. It looks like chocolate, smells like chocolate, tastes like chocolate but it's not.

Since BN is being lazy and Wooz wll probably ban him for spamming soon I'll try to elaborate.
Ekhm... Pete, Emil or Todd said something like "obviously when it comes to super mutants dialogue is not an option".
Y'know, cause you couldn't outsmart Harry or talk Master out of his plans. Just no.

OK...Let me rephrase the question.

How is RT/FPP using the Oblivion engine not the easy way for Bethesda?

I think that BN joked about Bethesda's supermutants :) You can't talk to them. They are imbeciles, they are evil. Why would you talk to them.

BN, I thought you knew what I knew. Not all mutants are hostile and some you might actually be able to talk to. Remember there was an early preview/interview that mentioned you could help the super mutants against the slavers of Paradise Falls.

You have some quotes or the source for me?
