Map of Metal

And now Tim Shafer has a world map ready for Brütal Legend 2.

Yeah it's pretty awesome.

I especially like the Hello Kitty island down in the bottom left corner.

Pretty nifty app, I have a few nitpicks from just glancing at it and makes me wonder what other errors they made but overall it seems cool. Her Ghost in the Fog by CoF is listed under Symphonic Black Metal but there is absolutely no traces of Black Metal left in Cradles work by that point, they had already sold out and were playing Extreme Gothic Metal by that time. Even including some genres such as Nu Metal, Rap Metal, Visual Kei, etc etc etc is a bit insulting as they are not actually metal, just bastardized genres of music that have stole metal elements.

I still get what they were trying to do, just wish they had put a bit more in the descriptions about how those genres are different from actual metal. The last thing we need is people getting more inspiration to make threads on the metal archives asking why Slipknot or Avenged Sevenfold are banned from the encyclopedia for not being metal.

I'll say it - the first Slipknot CD was pretty awesome. Mad decline from that point forward for them though.

I just like how they have the 'roads' to kind of explain the deviations of each subgenre and its 'parent'

Nothing wrong with liking Slipknot, just call them what they are, Nu Metal which is not metal at all but something very different. I like the first Slipknot album as well, Wait and Bleed is a great song. I also love the Murder Dolls, which is metal meets horror punk which is a nice combo and had Joey from Slipknot.

They did put a lot of effort into it though and for the most part were pretty spot on with most of what I see, a well done effort.

I liked Slipknot before they released All Hope is Gone, which is in my eyes a pure selling out. I've always thought of their image as stupid, and most of their songs lyrics as random nonsense. Though they had really great songs, Wait and Bleed being the best (in my opinion).
But as soon as Corey started "promoting" Stoned Sour (or something) with "romantic" lyrics (reminded me of HIM at one moment), I just thought "What the fuck is this?" and stopped listening to them.

It says right there that they are related genres, not really metal. Go to the upper right area.

Who cares what people think about what metal is? Or what they put in the encyclopedia (that anyone can edit). I listen to my metal and hard rock and i've past the point where i cared what people thought about the music i like. Also, the separatism that exists in metal today... not cool.

Jesus Fucking Christ, fuck the genres. Who cares about them anymore? It's good to categorize things up, but let go of the stiff boundaries.

I generally don't mind any kind of music, whether it is hip-hop, rap, pop, rnb, rock, metal, folk, classic or any other music sort. Doesn't mean I like some of it, but I respect other's opinion, as long as it is their own.
I mean, I am constantly surrounded by poseurs, who know shit about metal, and yet they babble about it, act smart, like they know something, while they don't. They behave like idiots (most of them), and make a bad name for metal fans. They know nothing about metal, listening to bands like Linkin Park, Slipknot, Bullet for my valentine and all other stuff. Not that I have anything against such bands, but it's annoying.
There isn't a place where I go where people don't mark me as a "satanist, cultist, sick" or something, because I have long hair and listen to stuff which they don't understand.
And all thanks to fucking poseurs.

That's the reason why (at least in my experience) there has to be some boundary between genres, between real music, and some crap out there. It is bad, but it is real. What can you do...

just asking you metal-heads is it wrong to like Korn (no clue what they are actually though >_> )

It's not about categorising, it's about organising.

Wow... imho everyone who's categorizing people in true fans and poseurs and complains about how these other guys are ruining the image of the subculture is a poseur himself.... because he cares more about his image than for the music.

You mean like how Metal is just a bastardized genre which stole form other musical genres which existed before it?
I mean really you sound as if you would have wanted to stop such a heretic music if you were norn like 20 - 30 years before Metal was 'invented'.

But it's still an interesting Map - i didn't know a damn lot of these subgroups in Metal. But well i wouldn't even think of calling myself a metalhead.

Nothing wrong with liking them per say, I enjoy them quite a bit myself. They are Nu-Metal with twings of industrial for good measure. Nu-Metal is not metal and those of the elitist mindset (especially the death and black variety) will get extremely upset when you attempt to label Nu or Core bands as Metal. While I am an elitist I am not an asshole and wont go into the technical details of what defines the lines. It is a long boring conversation for most anyways.

Anyone can edit the archives but we have a staff of diligent mods who stay on top of that stuff. Changes don't last long, especially since Encyclopedia Metallums core base are exclusively monitored by Death and Black enthusiasts so the temperament for other genres (especially non-metal) is not friendly.

No one ever really cares what people listen to. Hell, we have avid crust punk and other related genre discussions on the forums all the time. The issues come when people claim a band is metal when it is clearly not. As is this case with many Nu and Core bands.

There is not much separatism to be honest, unless you mean the backlash that Nu and Core gets, which is a different story and not a big deal. Out of the genres of metal:

Black
Death
Doom
Electronic
Folk
Gothic
Heavy/Trad
Symphonic
Power
Progressive
Thrash

Only a few really get grief. Power gets a bit of hate from some people for being "flowery", some goth bands get a bad rep for being emo, especially sell out ones like Cradle or Dimmu who were at one point Black but went Gothic/Symphonic respectfully for fame. Most though at the very least accept all the genres, it is the Nu and Core fans who try to weasel their way into being accepted as a true metal genre that get the blunt of the beat stick.

It has nothing to do with being a true fan or a poser. It has to do with being right or wrong. When some hot topic mall goth comes on the forum and makes his weekly "why do I get banned for adding Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed" spill it is because he is clearly ignorant of the differentiation between what makes each genre different.

The line is really clear cut on Nu bands, some Core ones it is a bit more tricky and really comes down to a moderated decision on which elements is more prevalent.

Here is fun thread that if anyone is honestly interested you can glance through, the third edition of "Why was X Band Deleted". Lots of interesting insight and convo actually goes on in there.

You were never beaten with a stick and a chain in the head because you're a "metal freak".
