Okay, so Marc Ecko is a douchebag and his art sucks, but this is still pretty cool:

http://www.stillfree.com/

Mark and his buddies broke into Andrews Air Force Base in Richmond, and tagged one of the engines of Air Force One.

Edit - fuck me, this is fake. Or at least they're saying it is. Hrumph.

Still, this raises an interesting question. Is graffitti art, and should it be respected as such? I don't really know much about the laws and regulations on graffitti in Euro-land, so maybe some of you guys could chime in (I'm looking at you, Woozie).

Thank you, Kharn.

Now, back to our studio, where Silencer is about to share the story of how a friend of his once tagged an airplane and is keeping a laminated copy of the newspaper article to this very day.
Silencer?:

looks authentic, but i doubt anyone would be able to tag Air Force One... smells like a hoax to me.

either way, funny as hell to watch. aspecially after the whole "putting the blueprint on a public website by accident"-thing.

as for your question Kharn, sure, graffiti can be art, but a simple tag isn't, in my modest non-artyfarty opinion.

euhm, Malky i mean, my bad.

just saw your av somewhere while posting & mixed it all up.

please don't hurt me!

So it's a hoax then? I was having trouble believing that he'd have the balls to do it or manage to sneak into an Air Force base, but then again stupider things have happened.

You really think that somebody without authorization would be able to "tag" the Presidents lifeline? I mean come on you can say what you want about his "administration" letting terrorists into the country( witch would be bullshit), but really now do you think that thats even possible? I imagine they have guards ordered to shoot fist and never ask questions. I doubt its real, dont believe the internet...............did i even really need to say that? im a little worried about you guys......too much time staring at a computer screen most likely.

Well, it's not really that outside the realm of the reasonable. Security anywhere is never as tight as it's made out to be, and unless they have a non-patrolling guard posted every 20 feet around the perimeter of the base then someone is going to be able to sneak in if they really wanted to.

It's not the sneaking in that makes me think it's fake, it's the fact that it's posted on his website and tons of other places. First Amendment bullshit aside, I'm sure it's a felony to break into or trespass on a military base and I don't think even the ACLU could get him out of that one.

Mark Ecko Tags Air Force One

Pfft yeah.

Nobody would get anywhere close to an army plane enough to tag it, and nobody would be as stupid as to risk being shot in an air force base. Airplanes and hangars are heavily guarded areas, not to mention an air force base... that happens to guard the president's jet.

Is graffitti art

The never-ending debate.

should it be respected as such?

Respected by whom?

The people that do it obviously view it as an art, or at least as a way to express themselves. It also is a pretty big scene outside the graffiti writers' circle, amongst different kinds of people.

Respected by the law? Ain't going to happen, and would be illogical in every possible way to be able to legally paint anywhere you want. It'd take half of the fun out of graffiti, for sure. There are legal walls, in any case, on which everyone may come and paint. The biggest legal graffiti wall in Europe in Warsaw is an example. Abused by corporations and political parties lately, paying kids to spray-paint advertising shit over good pieces.

Respected by the average, Archie Bunker citizen? What for?

My friend was in the Air Force and delivered pizzas on the side to make some extra cash. He crossed the flight line while delivering pizzas and was promply arrested. The MPs even knew him. Totally a fake.

However, is graffitti art? Some of it is. Tagging in my opinion is generally just being a douche. On the other hand, I have seen some amazing murals that I would totally classify as art.

Its obviously fake...I mean come on.

I'd more likely believe that Usama Bin Laden is manager of the White House's Maintenance crew than this.

It's this completely irreverent, over-the-top thing that could really never happen: this five-dollar can of paint putting a pimple on this Goliath.
Well, five dollars of paint and a little extra money to rent a 757, repaint it, store it, and keep everyone involved silent on the matter.

The moral of the story is if you have enough financial backing, you can create a replica of anything you want and pretend to do anything with it.
