modded f3 opinions?

It Wandered In From the Wastes
I know that as a whole, the majority of members on these forums are not fond of F3, to say the least. I'm in the minority there, but I do enjoy the more intelligent debates on these forums as opposed to the official ones. And I can get to these forums at work, so that helps.

Anywho, now that F3 has been out for 1 1/2 years, New Vegas on the horizon, all DLC is out, and some good mods have been released, i'm curious as to how people feel about F3 with some good mods. Granted, the level of writing will always be about the same.

I'm playing now with just a handful of mods, mainly Fellout and Fallout Wanderers Edition. Fellout gets rid of the green-ish tint over the land, and makes the world much more "sunny" and vibrant, while adding damn near pitch black nights. Fallout Wanderers Edition adds a HUGE survival aspect to the game that wasn't there before. I have to eat, and drink. I have to really watch my radiation. Stray bullets can cripple and kill. Falling more than ten feet hurts. Levelling is slow. I could go on.

All that being said, i'm wondering if there are some other forum goers that have enjoyed a game of F3 with some good mods. And if so, what mods?

I use Fellout and FWE too. Makes the game mechanics more challenging. Still - [spoiler:960a6279ac]u can easily get i.e. Gladiator Armor with DR like 40 - 50 on Level 2 or 3 if u go to the small Talon encampment and kill the Talon guy who has only a sledge. With the right tactics u can smash him with 10mm pistol or the Sniper rifle found behind megaton in hidden stash. Its like what? 30 minutes of playing? Get out of Vault, sell junk in Megaton, get the Sniper rifle behind the town, go to nearby Talon encampment, kill the sucker.[/spoiler:960a6279ac]
Sure FWE fixes a lot of issues of the game, but it cant fix the story, NPC's, quests etc. Still I find good gear is much too easy too find, and Power armor can be penetrated with fists or lead pipes.

However - FWE makes F3 the best u can get out of that game. I have tons of fun playing it - although - some things just bug me.

I do agree with above poster. The idea isn't that mods can fix what the writing, just if they make it more enjoyable. The game now feels more like a game of survival. The early levels with FWE, without exploiting anything, are brutal. Just finding water and keeping my purifier up and running iis a mean task. And I HAVE to explore the waste to find food and water. The writing is still sub par, but the feeling of actually being there is enhanced immensely.

thing is. If you dissliked Fallout 3 for its gameplay. That can be eventualy changed by mods.

if you dissliked F3 for its story and writtings. ... Well no mod will help you then I guess.

Most of those gameplay changes are awesome. Sure. But they sadly dont interest me thaaaat much cause what really was boring for me was the writting in the game.

FO3 was okay with mods. It's pretty unplayable without them. FWE made it a bit better. Nothing has been able to fix the story. However, I found an interesting downward spiral with mods for Bethesda's games. Morrowind was pretty amazing with mods. Oblivion was okay with mods. Fallout 3 was still pretty shit with mods.

While I don't necessarily find F3 or Oblivion shitty, I do think there are some trends forming. Morrowind had an amazing storyline and background lore, locations, and even a handful of cool characters (dagoth-ur himself, yagrum, divayth fyr, vivec, etc.) The mods for Morrowind added the things that Oblivion added later: houses, new lands, new graphics, better combat, new quests, etc. The problem is, most of the mods for Oblivion, and now Fallout 3 are trying to make the games better as far as what their predecessors had. I can't count how many Oblivion mods are out that add features from both Morrowind and Daggerfall, or attempt to make cool new meanginful NPCs etc. The Fallout mods seem to be focusing on making the world more immersive, which was F3s big strong point to begin with.

Long story short, you can't fix sub par writing and quests. Morrowind, for all it's "walk around 24/7" characters and simple quests, had real depth, and real story. Oblivion is the action blockbuster sequel, and sacrifices depth for accessibility. Fallout does similarly, but with a different universe. Mods can't fix bad writing though.

Morrowind had houses. And I also felt like Oblivion took away lots of quests. I was a fan of fucking around with the whole political thing. There were shit loads of quests for different factions and political group, religious groups, etc. Hell, you could join the military. Oblivion took most of that away and just gave you a few quests in a couple of "main" factions (mages, thieves, etc.).

Plus I thought some of the locations were pretty cool in Morrowind, over Oblivion. Like the tree houses and shit. As opposed to basic "medieval" houses everywhere in Oblivion. Plus I kinda liked the mix of machinery and magic in Morrowind dungeons, as opposed to straight up cliched Oblivion.

I really felt like Oblivion was dumbed down. Not in the usually "console bashing" way. Just in an overall gameplay and content way.

Hi, just finished all the RPG's and TPS that pretends to be an RPG (ME2) and have found my old dusty FO3 disk lying around. I wanted to ask what mods are there for it, and see that people have already suggested a few.

Which ones are the best though keeping in mind that I'll probably just play FO3 once to just finish the damn thing since I feel sorry for the money wasted and never go back to it again, so I'd rather have the best experience possible from this thing.

Is that Afterwar thing compatible with the others mentioned?

I know Afterwar is compatible with FWE because you can turn some of FWE's things off to make it compatible.

Thanks for the info. I like some of the things in both these mods and as I've said, my FO3 experience will be a 'go through/grind through and throw away after' one.
