Morrowind - is this intentional?

Idiotfool

Still Mildly Glowing
I decided to play through The Elder Scrolls series since I've had them for years and I just have to know what it is that people see in these games.

I've started up Morrowind and I don't know if I have a bug or if these things are intentional.

  1. When I walk through a town and if I'm close at all to an NPC, they tell me to hurry up, that they don't have all day or something else. I didn't engage in them at all, I just walked by. Is this intentional?
  2. Occasionally, the NPC will make a sleeping/groggy sound. The kind of generic sound that one hears in other games when you sneak up on a sleeping NPC. However, I've never seen any shop close or NPC in bed or sleeping in the game. Is this supposed to be this way?
There are so many bland or boring things about this game that I can complain about, but the above is absolutely asinine and, for me, kills any enjoyment I may have with this blase game.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but this shit is ridiculous. How the hell is this shit so beloved?

1. Yes, being close enough of NPC triggers a greeting they can give out, it has been in Oblivion & Skyrim as well.
2. I would assume that is the idle sound they make when they are not really talking to anybody but themselves. Oblivion had idle dialogues as well, but they needed mod to restore functional.

Also about that, while I'm more upon Dungeon Crawling aspects of TES - games, I can see why people like Morrowind. It was upon it's time a detailed world with constructed NPCs and some choices & consequences, while rather less unlike Daggerfall, where present, in addition stuff that was removed from the sequels, or streamlined, so to speak.

Morrowind, bland and boring?, That is literally the opposite I'd use to describe it. It's the most interesting of the Elder Scrolls Games IMO.

I'll be honest, Morrowind is like Seinfeld. It is good, but people has played other of it's kind with improved visuals/gameplay gimmicks or such they don't like to take chances upon this game. And while I do agree the game has flaws, it was quite unique from TES series and I would like to get another game like it again.

Biggest flaw is the copy pasted dialog.

I would guess that Morrowind was somewhat mind-blowing in the era that it came out. It's a large sandbox world with some voice acting. But, seriously, the lack of NPCs sleeping (yet making sleeping noises) and constantly talking to me (a stranger) and telling me out of the blue to stop wasting their time is ridiculously immersion breaking.

I really hoped that these were just bugs because intentionally hiring people to make sleep noises while not coding NPCs to sleep and having NPCs talk to you about wasting their time when you haven't actually engaged in dialog with them is retarded..

Meh, NPCs saying stuff when you walk by is quite common, it's in basically every RPG. Especially the guards in all the Elder Scrolls games were very talkative, regularly establishing memes.
And Morrowind is an old game, and like all Bethesda games it is notoriously buggy and unfinished. Lack of sleeping animations/pathways sounds par for the course for them...
