Mortal Kombat Rebirth?

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Any brawler fans here? A weird 8-minute teaser hit youtube for something entitled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. I'm not sure whether it's for the planned movie or for the rumored reboot of the game series but I like what I'm seeing. The take on things is original and the vibe is very fitting. Everyone should check it out.

The timing points to it being an MK game, since the MK movie is supposed to be in its infancy and the game was supposed to be unveiled at any moment now. Plus, E3 is around the corner. I wouldn't mind seeing a movie like this though.

Moved to General Gaming on the assumption that this is a game.

dont like the trailer.

Makes Mortal Combat ... feeling to realistic (but in a ridiculous way)

Yeah, this reminds me of Twisted Metal: Black.

Instead of making an improved sequel to save the franchise, they're going for a DARKER AND GRITTER reboot.

Shit, make the fighting fun and the fatalities bloodier, I don't give a shit, but don't bother pulling off this garbage because this is the kind of shit that makes gamers look retarded.

This is most likely a teaser for the movie. I don't know where maximaz thinks that the movie is in its infancy.

It has been in development hell for a few years. I also heard that hurricane Katrina delayed it since they were supposed to film some of it in LA.

Warner Bros. hasn't commented on it, so I'll wait until E3 for further speculation. It looks awesome! ( haha, fuck you Cage! )

Well, GRIMDARK is better than actually following the Mortal Kombat storyline; it's way too fucking silly.

I see where you're coming from but MK needed a reboot for a long time now. The mythos was good during the 2D MK era (1, 2, and 3) and has gotten more and more ridiculous and cartoony since then.

The fighting has gotten increasingly silly as well. It remains to be seen if the game is good but a reboot was definitely needed in my opinion. The original 3 games were a lot darker and more serious than the MK we know today so a return to that is not all that unusual.

The movie has not been in development this whole time, it's been more of a long, uncertain, pre-production. Warner decided to reboot the project recently, after they acquired MK license.

They also announced that they got a screenwriter only a couple of months ago and the release date was pushed to 2013 (I'm getting this from imdb). This teaser does not give me an impression of a movie that just began development and is 3 years away.

Mortal Kombat hasn't been a reasonable game since MK2 and even it didn't stack up to good fighting games, it was just amusing. The plot has never been good, it was simply a western take on the generic fighting game plot. Mortal Kombat was defined by it's excessive gore and that has become common to the point where if it's what your game is all about, you're screwed.

The new movie looks like crap, the original plot line was good because it was so bad that it was funny. The movies were watchable for the same reason, they were laughable. By removing the stupid alternate dimension stuff I think you end up with a much less laughable plot, which is for the worst. That all said, this movie might be something that can be laughed at if Baraka's costume and makeup are the norm.

That all said, I'm with you that the mythos was best for the series with MK2 and doing a reboot of the series so that they could revisit it would be fine. If you want a serious series than the MK mythos is the wrong place to look, it's unsalvageable

This is the only way to play Mortal Combat. Imagine all the new consoles were this size.

Uncanny, I do somewhat agree but most of what you stated as fact is very subjective. Sure the mythos and the story is silly today but I seriously thought the plot was good back then and many others did too. It was definitely good for a video game, at least. The biggest strength of it for me were the awesome, unique characters that no other fighting game had before or since. The gore was a big part of it but not the whole. That's why the first movie, which had almost no gore, did so well. It's silly as fuck today but back in 95, it was a decent action flick.

You may think that the original plot line was good because it was so bad that it was funny, and that's fine, but believe me when I tell you that for a LOT of people that was not the case. To you, attempting to make it less silly is ruining what made it good. To me, it's not.

Like Robocop, for example, MK will never deserve to be taken too seriously but if they take the series back to its original tone, it can still be something good for what it is. This is why I'm so excited by this teaser. There is a ton of cheese throughout but there is no intentional silliness that MK has been associated with lately. It looks like they just want to bring back the dark feel and the mystery by reintroducing events and characters. The first three MK games were an era for me so nostalgia has a lot to do with it but I believe they're saving the series with this.

And thats exactly what probably will NOT happen. Its pretty easy to see MK as "dark and gritty" when it actualy was not "dark and gritty" but more just as Garlic described.

Remove the silly parts from the game / movies and you have nothing else but a generic gory actionflick. Not that MK was't generic. But at least it was dunno. Enjoyable. Hard to desribe it.
I mean whats up with making Reptile some Ichthyosis sick character and the others psychotic killers and such. Thats not MK in my eyes.

THough instead of "rebooting" a franchise they should have eventualy tried to make something new instead. But we probably reached a time where everything will be copied or rebooted over and over and over ... again.

You know I always had the feeling MK was going somewhat in a similar direction like Big trouble in lidle China. Just not THAT much comedy. Just from the art and style direction.

Also if they want the movie not to suck that much they better come up with a killer soundtrack at least

Though do you think Christopher Lambert is still feeling embarased for playing in the first movie ? ... well not that he has played in THAT many great movies anyway. But always liked him as actor.

I dunno, I kind of like it. It doesn't take itself too seriously.

Looks like it'll be an enjoyable flick.

(Confirmed by Jeri Ryan (7of9) to be a movie pitch, and not a game trailer, btw)

This...is.....AWESOME!!!!

Can't wait for the movie, I just love the cheesy gore action flicks like the Punisher: Warzone and this looks pretty similar.

Also, Jax is some tough nigga right there.

To each his own, Crni Vuk. When the first game came out, I was blown away with the sheer atmosphere. The second one made it even better and the third was a departure but still a good conclusion to the trilogy. It was never a great work of art and certainly had cheesiness, just like this teaser, but it wasn't good because it was laughably silly (at least to me). Sort of like the Highlander, it was just good for what it was. Lately, I certainly think the series was due for a reboot as it gravitated more toward the silliness. I always wanted a movie that is similar in tone to what this teaser shows as I felt it would be closer to the games than the 95 one, although I liked that one too. If you didn't see the first games the same way, certainly you won't like this and that's fine. A reboot always produces opposite opinions.

Anyway, yes, it isn't a game, it's a movie pitch. May not be made but I hope it is. What this means is that it may not have anything to do with the game reboot.

They hired a well-known former action hero to work undercover?

God I love B-movie plots.

Also Scorpion as the protagonist? Meh. All of this looks meh. Cheap, to say the least.

I doubt they'd hire Seven of Nine for a game teaser.

Oh yeah, totally expensive, high-tier actress, right. That must be why you don't even refer to her by her name

I bet it's both.

Save money that way.

Would make sense, considering Mortal Combat's mocap history.

Oh please. He's played in tons of shit. He should be more ashamed for that abortion that was Highlander 2, which should have been a clue that Highlander is not a franchise title, but somehow they kept going.

Besides, the Mortal Kombat film wasn't bad. It was a lot of fighting with cheap special effects strung together by a weak plot. Compared to the other game films of its day, it was pretty damn solid.
