everyone always talks about their favorite guns, the Brush Guns, the YCS/186, Gobi etc but in all your time wandering the Mojave what are the weapons you've found to be the most worthless, ineffective you've come across, the vendor trash so to speak

Cleavers are pretty much useless junk, same thign with straight razors and boxing tape.

Any SMG, or things like knives and cleavers.

Edit: New Vegas really needs a "backstab" mechanic for stealth characters, as in silent one hit kills for any backstab attack that you pull off while hidden.

SMGs useless? I have find them to be quite useful, also Knives are actualy useful when starting as a melee character.

I'm going to have to go with Walpknut on this one, i've found SMGs to be plenty useful, sure not at long range but i've found them te be, pound for pound the best weapon option when being swarmed by lightly armored mobs, honestly i tend to like SMGs even better then shotguns when facing lots of mobs at close range.

High ammo consumption rates, low accuracy, low range, and useless against armored enemies means that SMGs aren't really worth it. I find it's better to sell them to vendors and buy a rifle instead.

The 10mm SMG, which shows up early in the game, has better dps that any pistol or non-DLC rifle (except for the energy weapons multiplas rifle). And that's not even considering the 9mm SMG (almost as good and available even earlier) or the frighteningly powerful 12,7mm SMG, which has the highest dps of any weapon in the game and can even be silenced on top of that. I get that you don't like them but how you can consider SMGs "useless" is beyond me.

Not counting the obviously weak ones I'd go with:

-Recharger Rifle: it weights a ton and has only 7 shots. The laser pistol packs the same power and weights only 3.

-Euclid C-Finder: nevermind that the damn thing works when it wants, it weights a ton (again!) despite being just a gun, can be used only once a day and only outdoor and is very, very weak. Wasn't this weapon supposed to be some kind of doomsday weapon? I remember interviews hyping it as such. It was downgraded with one of the patches?

-12.7mm Gun: ok, saying that it's useless it's an exageration but unless you didn't invest at all in Guns-related perks and mods is outclassed by others, more easily available guns. It's not the strongest, it doesn't have a lot of mods, it's not affected by any particular perk, it has only Hollow Point ammo and free spare parts are rare. You made a crit-based Courier? That Gun becomes comparable in terms of damage and is more flexible (AP ammo). You picked Hand Loader or just the recipe for 0.44 SWD ammo? The regular Magnum is better. You picked Cowboy? Any revolver but the weakest one is better. You have more than one of the above? Forget this gun even exists.
The only good thing it has is that it can be silenced.

Duh, then all automatic weapons suck since they suffer the same "flaws". What's next? Shotguns being bad for sniping?
The 10mm SMG is actually a great automatic weapon against unarmored opponents, much better than the Minigun or the Assault Carbine.

If this was at launch, when mobs had twice as much DT as they do now, when the balance of the game was completely skewed in favor of hard hitting weapons vs high DPS weapons then i'd agree with you, but after bug fixes and tweaks they are plenty useful.

its not to say that a 9MM SMG would replace my scoped varmit gun (at low levels) as my main gun, as it wouldnt but that has more to do with the general nature of encounters in New vegas (which is probably more an issue/limitation of the engine more then anything else) you tend to only run into 2, maybe 3 mobs at a time. but for those few timse when you have 3+ mobs in your face an SMG is your best friend

My problem with submachine guns in the game is that for reality, they should basically be like their handgun counterparts, but more awesome for being fully automatic (and probably having more range). But for balance, they aren't, because it would basically rapidly become a reason of "never ever use a hand gun again". Like the 10mm Pistol and 10mm SMG from FO1/2.

What I like about the 9mm and 10mm SMGs is that you can run full speed with them drawn (12.7 and .45 don't work like this though, but have massive DPS), which I find really useful in indoor areas like vaults and caves. They aren't great against high DT enemies, but there are really that many high DT enemies to worry about, and you can easily switch weapons for them.

On topic, for me the worst weapon is the bumper sword. Its heavy, has a non-trivial skill requirement, a very high STR requirement, is not a hold-out weapon and does significantly less damage than the Rebar Club, which is similar, very common and found earlier.

That's exactly why I don't like them in NV, they have high DPS but low DAM. DPS is only good against unarmored enemies, and how many unarmored enemies do you meet exactly? Actually, being unarmored just makes rifles and other high DAM weapons more effective, so there's never really any need to use a high DPS weapon.

The only automatic weapons I like are the Laser RCW with the ammo saving mod (the DT remover helps with the low DAM, and this weapon is actually ridiculously accurate) and the automatic rifle from Dead Money (it eats up ammo fast but .308 ammo's pretty common). I would say the .45 SMG from Honest Hearts but .45 ammo's too expensive to waste like that, the .45 pistol is an overall better choice.

A lot, actually. Almost all the enemies that aren't:
    -NCR
    -Legion
    -BoS
    -Deatchlaw
    -Large Radscorpions
    are unarmored/very lightly (5<) armored.

Firearms are more effective than melee/unarmored weapons so they are bad too? I think you are missing the point of the game...

You don't like automatic weapons but they aren't bad per-se.

And how many people do you find that don't fall into those categories? Unless you're having a really hard time fighting fiends or powder gangers, you don't really need automatic weapons.

No, melee and unarmed weapons have the advantage of not needing ammo. It's just that if you've got a bullet that can be used in either an automatic weapon or a rifle, you're better off using it in the rifle. It's killing one enemy with two shots, as opposed to killing one enemy slightly faster in ten shots.

I'm not missing the point of the game, there are weapons that are more effective than others. I'm not going to waste ammo with automatic weapons just for the hell of it, that's almost as stupid as the people who pretend they're guards in Oblivion. If one weapon is useful on all enemies and another is useful on a very narrow niche who are still easy to fight with the first weapon, then I'm going to pick the first weapon.

Edit: Just like I'll never use mines, because there's never really any need to. I might carry one or two around just in case, but there will probably never be a time in the game where they could kill someone more effectively than my other weapons.

I'm pretty sure my unarmed/melee weapons run was the easiest so far. It was extremely easy to literally punch people's faces off. Like, one or two punches, tops. Power fisted uppercut, head goes sailing through the air, hell-motherfucking-yeah motherfucker.

Automatic weapons aren't that bad, but I agree with you, in the game beginning I use the Cowboy Repeater, it's better than any SMG available.
    Except with Cazadors.

Ok, real weapons don't work this way and I hope you can understand what I'm about to say, but you are forgetting one thing that an automatic weapon can do and a rifle can't in the game: sometimes you don't need to aim too much, you just point and click. ;)

If you choose to help Ringo and Goosprings, those 3 mines in Primm are very good for defeating the Powder Gangers.
Just drop them in the road and if you don't kill at least 3 or 4 gangers on the spot, they will be left with very little health.

I normally do that quest long before I head to Primm, abandoning Goodsprings and going to Primm just kind of kills the mood. Besides, I've never had much of a problem killing the powder gangers with a 9mm pistol/laser pistol.

mines are kinda awesome for fighting melee creatures, just toss 'em and backpedal like crazy.

Cazadores, Yao Guai, Lakelurk, Green/Fire Geckos, Ghost People, Raiders, Nightkin, Nightstalkers, Feral Ghouls...

But they have the disadvantage of being close range only. Long range is better than close range, it's not like ammo is scarce.

In a role-playing game like Fallout the point isn't using what is more effective but choosing a character and sticking to it. So if someone likes automatic weapons or wants to make a character focused only on automatic weapons the question becomes: are they good enough? Yes, yes they are and the 10mm SMG is actually one of the best automatic weapons in the game.
