Movies that don't suck

I'm silently waiting for someone to say Boondock Saints so that I can pretentiously and delightedly tell them that it sucks.

Hamburger Hill
is a decent war flick in the vein of Full Metal Jacket, it doesn't have as many likable characters though, although I guess that was the point.

If you're up for a nice long one, The Longest Day is a classic and worth watching if you enjoy seeing older films just to see how groundbreaking they were for their time, both technically and dramatically.

Tora! Tora! Tora! is another kick ass war movie, and it makes up for that abomination of a film Pearl Harbor if you're keen on that event.

When Trumpets Fade isn't very easy to find, and it's a TV movie, but it's better than most big budget flicks, I'd definitely recommend it, if not for the acting alone.

Also, if you liked Requiem For a Dream I recommend Pi, mostly because Aronofsky didn't have his head stuck up his ass yet and personally I find it to be a better film.

Tengoku to jigoku
or
High and Low for non-fags is an awesome thriller that you should certainly check out, because it kicks mega ass, it destroys that ass actually.

Sono otoko, kyôbô ni tsuki or Violent Cop for non-fags is another awesome thriller. I just can't get enough of these. Really.

These are not new films but I like them

Life of Brian
Evil Dead 1-3
Maniac cop 1-2
Fistfull of dollar
Sareface

motivated by this thread i checked imdb.com. took a look in the 250 best movies of all time. sadly, i have seen and/or own most of these 250. maybe youll find some nice flics there:

good ones:
_________________________________________

"the man from earth". quiet movie, like a little get-together with some of my more academic friends. great plot, great actors. dont expect any action - its like a good book, everything happens in the dialogue and on the inside. of you.

I'm sorry but you just lost any credibilty you might have. That movie... okay, some intellectually stimulating points. But great actors? That had to be the most low budget movies with the most terrible acting in the world. Characters overreacted at almost every moment and the constant outbursts just didn't fit well. It had some interesting ideas but TERRIBLE execution.

On other movies, from what I've seen in the list:
Out now movies:
Iron Man, Prince Caspian, The Hulk and Get Smart are all great.

On dvd:
I totally agree with the Lucky Number Slevin pick.

Some that I've seen recently that I'd recommend:
If you want a chick flick: Definitely, Maybe is great, as is August Rush

If you want Sports:
We Are Marshall was top notch

Action:
Deja Vu

Comedy/Drama/Both?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Everything is Illuminated

I advise you stay away from Semi-Pro though. Awful, awful movie. If you want to see Will Ferrell, stay away from his outlandish comedies and see Stranger Than Fiction.

I really liked Semi-Pro. Sure you could make the argument that Will Farrell movies are the same shit over and over again; but that 'same shit' is hilarious. For movies like that, you gotta know what your getting into. If you expect too much from a movie, you might as well not go.

I don't know Prez, I guess I've never seen any of his real outlandish comedies (I've only seen him in Anchorman and Stranger Than before I saw Semi-Pro). I thought there were brief funny moments, but the movie just sort of swung randomly about with no real cohesive direction. I remember sitting there during the poker scene when the guy gets shot, and then the movie moves on and just thinking to myself... what the ^#%#$.

Haha, yeah, Will Farrel comedies are usually rubbish... yet, somehow, strangely, they entertain me. This is the sort of entertainment during which i completely shut down my brain, and even though i know it's wrong and i shouldn't, i let out a merry chuckle now and then. Dunno.

The poker scene was ace, though, reminded me of The Big Lebowski. :D

Newer movies; Indy 4 and Iron Man
Also imo superhero movie was fun >< But I hear it got lousy reviews.

strangely i still like "the man from earth". maybe i was influenced by my recent stints into "real" theaters - the acting in theaters is a lot less subtle than it is in movies.

"stranger than fiction" was great, no doubt about it. "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" was way better than i expected - definitely worth to watch it.

right now it seems that there are a lot of, say, mid-class movies out there. its like watching CSI in the background while you do something else... if you catch my drift. there goes:

we own the night - mr brooks - shooter - trainig day etc etc. they are fairly recent and failry decent. if you plan on doing a dvd evening, put them last, you will probably fall asleep watching them but be nonetheless entertained on your way to sleep

Ghost Dog - Very good movie about a black 'assassin' who follows the code of bushido.

Letters from Iwo Jima - Movie about grunts in Iwo Jima, directed by Clint Eastwood. IMO this should have won the Oscar not the Departed...

The Deer Hunter - Flick about the effects of war on people, their personalities and family. Theres about 50 seconds of action in this movie. The characters are really good and the acting is terrific.

Taxi Driver - A somewhat anti-social guy doing his job and witness the dark side of the city. Later he meets a 13 year old prostitute and decides to save him from her brothel... with a .44 magnum

Goodfellas - Best mob movie ever.

Phone Booth - Guys gets pinned by a sniper in a phone both in new york city, and must change his lifestyle if he wanna survive.

Cop Land - Stallone's best acting, although the big name actors were a waste of money i think, they characters weren't really developed.

watched "Cloverfield" on a recent trip over-sea's...pretty ho-hum. Also watched "The Eye", another japanese to american make-over of something that scares japanese people but I found it quite lame.

Just watched Cube 2: Hypercube and Cube:0....if you liked the first Cube(awesome movie), skip Cube 2 which got caught up with CGI and really stunk, Cube 0 isn't too bad though...closer to the first one.

Watched Cypher with Jeremy Northam and Lucy Liu, not bad, but not good...another ho-hum film. Planning on watching Revolver tonight, and maybe the old classic Silent Running.

As far as something recent you may not have seen goes, I'd recommend Persopolis. Fantastic French animated flick about a girl growing up in Teheran around the time of the Islamic revolution. Best film I've seen in the past couple years.

I'd also suggest Miller's Crossing. It's a Coen Brothers take on a gangster flick, a bit silly and over the top at times (intentionally and well done I'd say) but the characters are superb. John Turturo and Gabriel Byrne are great in it.

Nah... nothins more foolish ten a mahn chasin his hat.

everyone who is saying indy 4 doesn't suck belongs on a rocket to the sun. indy 4 ruined my night, my childhood, and possibly my marriage and my life. stay tuned.

movies that really don't suck:

the proposition
the wicker man [original 1973 UNEDITED version. both the remake and the american edit are blasphemy.]
the dreamers [pseudo-incest and eva green naked for 99% of the movie? i'm so in.]
dancer in the dark [most von trier films are worth a watch, but this and 'the five obstructions' are my favourites]
the wind that shakes the barley
good night, and good luck

Donnie Brasco - Pacino and Depp, based on true story, one of my favorite movies

Carlito's Way - Pacino, Penn, mob movie, another one of my favorites

Bullet - Rourke, Tupac, very underrated street crime movie, one of the best soundtracks ever

Highlander - got an oscar for the best movie ever

Brother, Kikujiro, Zatoichi, Violent Cop - Takeshi Kitano movies, nuff said

Iron Man.
The incredible Hulk.
Spiderman 1 and 2
Diary of the Dead
Mad Max
Highlander series
Once upon a time in Mexico
Cube
Night of the living dead
Dawn of the dead
Star wars IV,V,VI
Blade Runner
A boy and his Dog
Evil dead series
Man with no name trilogy
Donnie Darko

Just saw Eastern Promises (2007).

It is a dark crime drama about Russian mafia in London. I was not disappointed after having watched this film.

Directed by David Cronenberg
Stars Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts

Oh, and thanks to the individual who mentioned In Bruges a while back. That too was a good film.

Me likey the non-mainstream (Hollywood) crime films.

* snatch
* lock stock and two smoking barrels
* the game
* fear and loathing in las vegas
* train spotting (although not as good as the above one)
* the game
* boondock saints
* hellboy
* all the indiana jones movies

could go on a while

It is awesome. One of the best films of last year, for sure.

The bath-house fight sequence is mind-fuckingly incredible.
