Movies that don't suck

the wicker man [original 1973 UNEDITED version. both the remake and the american edit are blasphemy.

I'm under the assumption that the new one with Cage is actually a comedy that was marketed as horror/drama by some clerical error- but they were too proud to admit they fucked up, so the just went with it. Otherwise, I will say it still wins because it's hard to make a movie that sucks and is still fun to watch without anyone riffing it. I laugh everytime I watch that movie. But yeah, it's a bad movie, but at least it's really funny.

It's the same with The Departed.

Dark Knight sure as hell doesn't suck!

I liked Diary of the Dead very much as well. I think it really portrayed our society today with how much information can be absorbed through multiple outlets. George Romero continues to impress me,but I recently heard that he planned on making a Diary of the Dead 2. That is something I am wary of.

I saw both the Hulk and Wanted over the weekend. Hulk was ok, but the visuals didn't do it for me. I had low expectations for Wanted, but was pleasantly suprised. I know it deviated from the comic but didn't mind (Do we really need another comic book movie?). Reminded me a violent Fight Club/Matrix and was fun but probably not memorable.

Quintin Tarentino's "Natural Born Killers"

Tarantino had very little to do with that movie. It is an Oliver Stone film and for all intents and purposes an Oliver Stone script.

Y'know, I'm surprised there hasn't been any mention of Fido in this thread. It's kind of a dark zombie comedy that runs in a 50's Americana vein shared by a certain computer game we all know and love, complete with SCIENCE!

In short: space radiation starts animating our Earth dead, so trusty neighborhood megacorp ZomCon builds a bunch of Leave-It-to-Beaver-esque walled communities to keep life safe, complacent, and zombie-free. They've even built control collars to turn wild zombies into cheap domestic labor. When schoolyard outcast Timmy Robinson's parents bring home a zombie of their own, the lonely boy starts to form a bond with the creature. Hijinks ensue.

It really is a smart little film... I actually had to buy two copies, since one of them is constantly on loan.

I totally agree I loved that movie it was very funny and dark and had an amount of charm to it....and it had billy connolly in it with no hair and no beard.....THAT was scary

i have to agree with the malk. eastern promises is great. iirc, naomi watts starred in it, and for some reason i love that actress. i dont agree with the bathhouse fight scene being the greatest in this movie, but mortensen being naked there i have a fairly good idea why you thought so.

wanted was, as i expected, quite entertaining. jolie is frighteningly thin there, either a consuming illness or just the boring midlife bulimia, who knows and who cares.

ironman was well done, but was beat by batman. cant exactly tell you why, since both movies are superhero movies, and i dont really care for them. hancock was funny though, but the end was so... corny and abrupt.

thanks for pointing out "fido". refreshing to see that not all people posting here are limited to the big box office movies. otoh i have to admit that i havent seen a really good film in the last years that wasnt either

a) a pure work of art and entertaining as heck
b) in my canon of good movies anyways.

the last movie i watched that made me think a bit and was quite eye-candy was "waking life". looks like some edited real-life movie to look like a cartoon and is basically about a (possibly) dead guy reviewing his life and his views on it by dialogues with all the persons that were important in his life. there was a movie in that visual style starring k. reeves, was about some drug, forgot the name.

You're thinking of "A Scanner Darkly," based on the work of the very good (and unfortunately very bankable) Phillip K. Dick. Your milage may vary. I never saw it, myself.

Name on the back said Quintin Terentino, so that's why I said... But cool, I did not know that.

Other Movies that don't suck:

The Postman (with Kevin Costner, Post-Apocolyptic type movie, very cool)

Dark City

Warlock (okay this one sucks a little, but it's one of those old "gotta see it" type "Cult Clasics")

Just saw Diving Bell of the Butterfly or whatever its name may be. Wow, that was impressive. The filming was incredible as well.

Put that one on the list.

After all its hype, I felt it was a bit bland and maybe rushed, the paces could've been better handled. But an entertaining movie, it is (:
