My Fallout 2 actual experience

Hyalyago

First time out of the vault
I've been a Fallout fan almost all my life, or to be honest since I discovered the first game (almost) by accident and gave it a shot. I learned a lot practising english thanks to it.

Well, since the success Fallout had with me, it came the turn of Fallout 2. SUCCEDED AS WELL!!! But I've kept playing the game from time to time since then, and my heart forced me to share a couple of things I've come to recently.

I'm playing Fallout 2 with the 1.02e patch (must be USA version since there are children) in a super machine with Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The normal screen resolution I have for desktop is 1680 x 1050. I tried to play as I would have like in Windows 98/XP but screen was very big and some details didn't "fit"... not to mention the colors mesh that just from the installation screen made it looked like shit. I came to fix that perfecly after instalation with the help of the Hi Res patch I found here. Fine. But since then, I came to a few minor bugs that I didn't have under 98/XP times. Here we go:

- In some random encounters, I ALWAYS find just one bastard that "refuses" to take the same reasonable ammount of damage as normal. For example, I find some deathclaws and they receive hits for 45 to 110. Well there's always one that won't take more than 7 to 18. A TOUGH ONE! YAYY!!!

- Miniguns won't hurt mutants, centaurs, floaters or aliens, no matter what kind of ammo are they carrying (unless you go for a critical).

- Sometimes, when saving a game in battle having action points in reserve, the game will load ignoring them and skiping to enemies turn like if you hadn't any left. DISGUSTING!

- Chris at the Navarro gas station won't believe you if you tell him you wanna join the Enclave, no matter how smart you are, 300% in all stats, all 10 in S.P.E.C.I.A.L., the armor you are wearing, if you come with company or not, or if you come with your car or on foot.

- A car bug (yeah, still). Tried to exit a town on foot, but I appear in the car at the world map (the engine turn doesn't sound). I travel and the fuel goes down as "normal", but as soon as I reach any location, the car has gone for good from the entire game. SURPRISE!!!

- Lucky thing I bought ammo like crazy from the very beginning, because from some point in the game, merchants stop restocking. Well, merchants and everybody else, because no one have even a damn stimpack. THIS JUST GETS BETTER!!!

- For some reason, sometimes you can eliminate a target with a critical of less than it's total ammount of hitpoints. YEEEAAHH, boxing at New Reno or fighting at San Francisco ring was easier than EVER, fucking those guys with criticals of 10 hit points only.

- Travelling won't restore your hit points at a normal rate like before, so you can travel from Modoc to San Francisco and find out that you only restored 2 or 4 hit points. Also the radiation taken can wear off, leaving you "healthier" making you wonder what was the magic trick XDD

And that's all for now. Maybe I left something behind but that's about all I can tell by now. If you guys feel identified don't hessitate to share your experience.

Finally, I would like to suggest merging the High Resolution mod with the Fallout 2 Restoration Proyect. It's worth a while, and you'll "see" the difference.

Thanks for reading and sorry about this whole text. Vault City prevails, citizens XDD

Many of the issues you mentioned here have been identified and discussed at length in the Restoration Project threads and elsewhere on NMA; a few searches should turn up the answers you seek. (Such as "never save in battle; it's bugged and cannot be fixed.")

Also, try installing the latest version of the RP and checking to see whether any of the bugs you noticed can be reproduced there. If so, then you can see if they're on the Wikia bug list already, and if not, add them to the list along with a savegame to demonstrate the bug. Such bugs are more likely to get fixed that way than any other.

I'm not sure what you mean by merging Hi-Res patch with the RP, but it's already included. If you mean making them the same project, I'm against. I love RP, but there might be people who doesn't even like it and still want to be able to play Fallout 2 at Hi-Res. There are people who play with the russian Megamod, for example.

But not all, right? I just wonder if they are official patch 1.02e issues or Hi Res patch problems.

As said before, play the latest version of the RP, review against your bug list, then review the current bug list - http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/Restoration_Project_bug_reports - and if then you have something new, add it to the bug list page appropriately.

I'll take a stab at it.

YAYY!!!

Not exactly sure what you mean by this, but it's normal for deathclaw and alien encounters to come in a mix of normal and tough varieties (and with deathclaws the tough ones are not necessarily adults).

- Miniguns won't hurt mutants, centaurs, floaters or aliens, no matter what kind of ammo are they carrying (unless you go for a critical).

Sounds like a combination of high damage resistance and using bad ammo.

- Sometimes, when saving a game in battle having action points in reserve, the game will load ignoring them and skiping to enemies turn like if you hadn't any left. DISGUSTING!

Old engine bug.

- Chris at the Navarro gas station won't believe you if you tell him you wanna join the Enclave, no matter how smart you are, 300% in all stats, all 10 in S.P.E.C.I.A.L., the armor you are wearing, if you come with company or not, or if you come with your car or on foot.

Should be just IN 4 and a Speech check. No idea why a resolution patch would affect that.

- A car bug (yeah, still). Tried to exit a town on foot, but I appear in the car at the world map (the engine turn doesn't sound). I travel and the fuel goes down as "normal", but as soon as I reach any location, the car has gone for good from the entire game. SURPRISE!!!

Old (rare) engine/script bug.

- Lucky thing I bought ammo like crazy from the very beginning, because from some point in the game, merchants stop restocking. Well, merchants and everybody else, because no one have even a damn stimpack. THIS JUST GETS BETTER!!!

Has been reported since long before the resolution patch, though I don't personally have confirmation that it can happen in a completely unmodded game. It has to do with the game timer and would likely be caused by hacks designed to avoid the 13-year time limit.

- For some reason, sometimes you can eliminate a target with a critical of less than it's total ammount of hitpoints. YEEEAAHH, boxing at New Reno or fighting at San Francisco ring was easier than EVER, fucking those guys with criticals of 10 hit points only.

Instant kill criticals are part of the ruleset.

- Travelling won't restore your hit points at a normal rate like before, so you can travel from Modoc to San Francisco and find out that you only restored 2 or 4 hit points. Also the radiation taken can wear off, leaving you "healthier" making you wonder what was the magic trick XDD

The first has to do with CPU speed, not mods. About the second, your accumulated radiation absorbed does not wear off, but the stat damage caused by a dose of radiation does.

I'll take a stab at it.

That's my guess too.

Not exactly sure what you mean by this, but it's normal for deathclaw and alien encounters to come in a mix of normal and tough varieties (and with deathclaws the tough ones are not necessarily adults).

What I meant is that it happens with every group of enemies I encounter. It doesn't have to be tough deathclaws or though aliens. Can be normal raiders, geckos, mutants or whatever. Wherever I encounter a group of enemies, one of them I have to let him the last and be patient because he takes much less damage than its comrades, even with criticals. kinda weird.

Sounds like a combination of high damage resistance and using bad ammo.

Hmnnn, not exactly I think. I've heard long ago about 5mm AP ammo bug, but that didn't involve normal 5mm JHP. I had an avenger minigun trying both ammo types at the Military Base, and mutants got hits for "no damage" all the time. I had to quick load for every mutant until I got a critical burst allowing me to kill them. I could only wipe the entire base thanks to criticals only. -_-

Old engine bug.

Sometimes happened, sometimes not. Loading the same turn would fix it, but still...

Should be just IN 4 and a Speech check. No idea why a resolution patch would affect that.

Hi Res patch was my best guess since it didn't ever happened to me with the official patch, at least under Windows XP. I had 7 IN and 120% speech, also 6 or 7 CHA, so it shouldn't have been any problem. Also I tried to max everything with the FALCHE2 but Chris kept telling me to go and explore south "where civilization is" (I think that's his speech)

Old (rare) engine/script bug.

I take that as an occasional bug ever experienced by people. Thank you

Has been reported since long before the resolution patch, though I don't personally have confirmation that it can happen in a completely unmodded game. It has to do with the game timer and would likely be caused by hacks designed to avoid the 13-year time limit.

I will use FALCHE 2 to make my character "younger" lowering his age. I will report if that works.

Instant kill criticals are part of the ruleset.

I didn't know that. To be honest that's new for me. I would've thought that could be the feature of some perk... Thank you, friend!

The first has to do with CPU speed, not mods. About the second, your accumulated radiation absorbed does not wear off, but the stat damage caused by a dose of radiation does.

I ignored that too! Then, having a fast CPU brings some handicaps, right? wow, thank you very much, you've been very helpful, really.

Thank you, I'll do that. Say, can I play Fallout 2 with both RP and Hi Res patch?
As I already told you, Hi Res patch is included in RP. The current included version is 3.0.3, while the newest is 3.0.5. If you want to, you can update it in your install, providing you don't overwrite the .ini included in RP (but you can edit your config there).

Oh, I forgot to mention that I also lack of encounters with some creatures like Yakuzas and some weapons are not to be found anymore at merchants like bozar and wakizashi blades.
