Just curious: How many users of this site know about this November event, or have participated in it in years past?

If you will be this year, like me, feel free to detail your story ideas.

First time hearing about it.

Essentially, it's a month-long challenge through November to write 50,000 words of a story, 10,000 more than the number required for a story to qualify as a novel. Hence also the long name of the event: National Novel Writing Month.

How many regular sized book pages is that?

I'm using the book "The Haunter of the Dark" for this guess, but at an average of 11 words per line with a pt. 9 typeface, and 38 lines per page with single spacing, that's about 120 pages. A little over 1/5th of that book's length.

Why do you need a month to write a novell? It's like ink-tober.

If you want to do et, just do et :p

Not exactly, I've seen some books cap out at 150/160 pages. They weren't tremendous in size either.

So basically, write a short book?

True, you don't, but one month where this kind of thing is encouraged helps.

That's because THOTD is a compilation of Lovecraft's works, among others, so its size is bloated. Otherwise, yes, write at least a short novel within a month.

I know a few family members and friends who are into it, but I turn my nose up at it. I love to write now and again, and for that it is somewhat interesting, but that whole mess smells of circlejerking self-righteousness 90% of the time I've seen or heard it mentioned. "Oh, you know, I'm doing nanowrimo and... *smug look and shitty anecdote about how awesome they are.*"
