First time out of the vault
Hello fellow members,
I recently bought the Fallout 1 & 2 jewel cases so the CD games not from Steam, while waiting for the items to arrive I read that it does run on Windows 10 but has to be messed around with to function on my laptop. When I got my order and inserted the disc (Fallout 2), I tried to install it, but an error pops out and says, "Error initializing video mode". I have read that to get it to install and run, people recommended patches such as The Restoration Project and The Unofficial Patch, listed in this link:
http://www.nma-fallout.com/threads/fallout-2-restoration-project-2-3-3-unofficial-expansion.202265/
To be honest, I am not any good at following instructions and when I do some of "easy/known" instructions aren't included. I need help into trying to configure this, not someone blabbing that it can be done or that it's easy to do, I have never dealt with things like this. So please help, because I want to finally play these games for the first time. So does anyone want to help:help:?

Ok, first of all you need to stop using random fonts and colours and stuff ;)
Second, I envy you for being able to play Fallout 1 and 2 for the first time these days. That's awesome, I hope you'll like them.
Anyway, if the installation doesn't even run, that's a problem. Have you tried running the installation file as administrator or in compatibility mode?
(Right-click on the setup.exe or install.exe or whatever on the CD and click on "Run as administrator" or click on "Properties" and check "Compatibility Mode" for Windows XP under "Compatibility").

Sorry new to this get excited with the features they offer:dance:... Well I tried both of things you mentioned and tried on compatibility mode to changes certain settings, but it still showed the same error. By the way, do you know how to posts threads like these to the public, or does it have to be under a specific section?

CD versions? Don't use their setup.exe because they're ancient. Follow the manual installation guide, after that you can run RP 2.3.3 installer which should be simple enough.
Also, Fallout 1 & 2 never need the Compatibility Mode in Windows. They can work perfectly fine without it in Win2000/XP/2003/7/2008/10 (all the "more modern" Windows versions I've tested).

What do you mean "public"? Your first post wasn't public because it contained a link, and due to spambots we moderate the first few posts of every new user to need manual approval if it contains links and stuff.
So if that doesn't work, do what @NovaRain suggests and use the manual installation guide.

Yeah, I don't recall ever using it, either, but hey, never tried it on Win 10 :D

Well, hopefully, I can follow this without screwing up... Like what is an NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3, what is it necessary for?

I guess you're quite young :D It's a very old version of Windows (Microsoft kinda branched Windows back then into Windows 9x and Windows NT, the first as a consumer version still based on DOS, the latter as a more professional OS better capable of networking, with a completely new kernel. Since Windows 2000/XP the consumer Windows versions were also based on the NT kernel instead of DOS).
Just ignore all of that and follow the instructions, it should work.

Sorry, if I am bothering you, but I am stuck on step 5 that says, "Next install the official patches for Fallout 1 or Fallout 2, it's easiest just to unzip/unrar them into the Fallout 1/2 folder. " Does it mean the patches from the disc? When I looked for the patches in the program/win there was only one under PATCH000.__
If it were that one it does not give the option to unzip/unrar

If you can't find the patches on the disks, you could use these links for the patches on the site:

http://www.nma-fallout.com/resources/categories/patches.22/

EDIT: I'm not too sure what else to do tbh since the GoG version is quite easy to install.
Here are some links to FIXIT and the Fallout 2 Restoration patch: http://www.nma-fallout.com/threads/fallout-fixt-0-81alpha-july-5th-2015.194562/

Rename it to PATCH000.dat, but actually you don't need to do that since RP 2.3.3 includes all content of official patch, plus unofficial fixes. Step 1~4 already gives you a working (but buggy) installation of the game.

Ooof, that OP hurt to read. Welcome to the forums, anyway.

Fuck its not trying to run now it says "Error initializing video mode 640 x 480", can someone point out what is wrong
?

Disable the compatibility options again, especially 640 x 480 mode. RP and FIXIT already involve hi res patches that let Fallout render at higher resolutions.

I downloaded the FIXIT FULL/CUSTOM and its not doing anything for me, very confused... this was is not easy at all for me, could be I am overlooking something simple... like some mistake but I carefully tried following instructions. On the forum, it says I have to have a Windows NT 4 server pack 3, could that be why? or should the patches help fix all that?

No, it says that you have to have NT 4 SP3 or higher, which is what Windows 10 is.
Are you trying to install FIXT on Fallout 2? It's only for Fallout 1, while the Restoration Project is only for Fallout 2.
Alright, have you installed Fallout 1/2 following the manual installation procedure described above? Do you have a fresh folder with all your Fallout files in it, like, does it have a FALLOUTW.exe, a DATA folder, a MASTER.DAT and a CRITTER.DAT?
FIXT and RP go on a clean installation and, as far as I know, include all the necessary patches already.

Okay, I redid everything to make sure I didn't mess up and I'm at the part to install the Restoration Project patch, but where do I install it is the question? I am not given the option to install into the Fallout 2 file I made...
The only acceptable option it gives me is in the WINDOW (C:) , but the Fallout Restoration Project pg. says not to install it in the program files directory. When I try to install it in New FIle or anywhere else in the the WINDOWS (C:) it gives me:
"Fallout 2 RP must be installed to the main F 2 installation directory. Pls make sure the file Fallout2.exe is n the directory you are installing to."

I think I finally installed the restoration project patch to my Fallout 2 file, I tried to launch it ,but its the same error popping up "Error initializing video mode 640 x 480" I don't know what to do from here, if I don't need to mess around with the compatibility ...

"Windows" is the name of your HDD partition. Your game appears to be installed on your desktop, so the path should be something like "C:\users\YOURUSERNAME\Desktop\Games\Fallout 2".
Could you post a screenshot of what your game folder now looks like, please?

Thanks, yeah I successfully installed into the F2 folder. This how it looks like currently.

Ok, that looks good. Have you run the f2_res_config.exe? Maybe that will help.
