It's been a while, but I can't play too often so it has taken some time to get a real impression.
General notes; the radio stations rock.
GTA III
I started with GTA III and played for a while, (just short of opening up last island I believe), but then I encountered a mission I struggled with, and having both GTA: VC and GTA: SA to turn to I chickened out ...
In retrospect I probably sped through the missions too fast and forgot to explore and play. I did collect quite a few hidden packages though.
The most annoying thing in GTA III was the mobsters carrying shotguns; I could never drive through their district without dying due to my car not being able to survive more than two shots. (I read there is a patch/mod for this, but I did not install it since I stopped playing anyway)
All in all I enjoyed GTA III, but having already moved on I doubt I will go back to finish it.
GTA: VC
I loved the Miami Vice theme, and enjoyed the driving part much better in GTA: VC. Cruising around in an Infernus was never better!
Unlike with GTA III I stopped playing GTA: VC due to a save game bug; all attempts to load a(ny) save game resulted in the game crashing so I again moved on to the next tier (GTA: SA)
I had reached the point in GTA: VC where I had aquired the mansion and really started making money, so the game was getting interesting. A shame about the save games ...
I may return to GTA: VC and try again some day.
So then to my current favourite: GTA: SA
I love it. Absolutely love it.
Am now returned to the town after having spent some time in the countryside, and have aquired a gas station and started working for Woozie.
I spent quite some time fighting gang wars and got a lot of territory and have in general slowed down my questing in order to be able to explore, train skills and just have fun.
Am struggling with money so far so will maybe test robbery and breaking into people's houses. I have not been able to buy the shop that becomes available after aquiring the gas station yet as I have not got 30.000 and will try to avoid doing missions for it ... Don't want to progress the story too quickly this time.
The reason I love it is the writing and the voice acting - the characters seem quite thought through and I actually want my character to look good, to be respectable and in shape. I have therefore spent time getting CJ buff and fit and always look forward to new missions. Also loved the start of the game when everything was so down to earth in the hood - using bicycles etc.
The driving school was great as it made me realize I could do so much more than I was already doing with the vehicles.
I believe I will have hours and hours of fun with GTA: SA still
What has annoyed me with GTA: SA so far is:
1. Denise (?) - the wannabe girlfriend. I got bored of taking her on dates since nothing really happened so I just thought "fuck it" and stopped dating her.
2. The controls - the PC controls are awkward and I have not been able to remap them to my liking yet. Still trying ...
I am not regretting my purchase of these games in other words ... looking forward to GTA IV when the time comes (for me), but am not having any rush yet as GTA: SA is great.
