Never played any GTA titles; where to start?

'A bit better' is a bit of an euphemism, in my opinion. The smallest IV NPC has more personality and credibility than anybody in say, F3.

We're not comparing it to F3.

Compared to GTA III, VC and SA, the span is a bit wider, especially because you chat with them more on those stupid-ass dates, but as I said, while the main character is infinitely better, the tradition of solid characterization has been there for some time.

In III...well ok Catalina and Maria are just annoying as fuck. Donald Love is good, tho'. Also, I do so like el Burro.

In VC, the game really thrives on archetypes. Ken Rosenberg is the ultimate archetype, and it works really well, and Lance Vance is a good plot staple as well. But Avery Carrington has some of the best writing of any GTA character. Also, Love Fist is hilarious.

In SA, Tenpenny was better than he had the right to be, but it was Torino that stole the show. Also, people easily miss how important a well setup annoying character that you can punish later (OG Loc) is. Also, Woozie, man, Woozie.

Can we all agree that Dwayne was an abominable annoying character?
I can agree he was abominable in the sense he was too fucking depressing.
D: "Man Niko, I'm broke, I live in some busta ass tenements, got no job, just out of jail AND I'm over thirty. I ain't got nothin in dis world."
N: "I'm gonna go kill myself now. Kthxbai." <jumps>

Heh. He was intended to be annoying, just like Brucie and Manny, but in a different way. That's why Niko actually points out that maybe Dwayne should lighten up at some point.

You shoulda saved Playboy X instead, man

So, it is worth going back and replaying to get the different outcomes?

Also, I started playing them in order about two years ago when I bought I, II, and London 1969 in a ten dollar pack; I then bought III, VC and SA in the bargain bin. IV was the first one I played on console, and it seems like I made the right choice there judging by the reactions to the port around here..

I would definitely recommend playing in order, especially considering how cheap/free you can get most of the series. Playing I and II gives you a different perspective on the series, and they're a lot of fun in their own right.

You could also start with IV since it has almost nothing to do with the older games.

Nonsense, it's the same principle but with tighter narrative structuring and a gloomier setting.
I meant the story, not the structure and gameplay.

...I don't get it. How is GTA IV completely separate story-wise from the other titles? It's gloomier and more serious for sure, but that's been the trend for some time now in the GTA series. It's gradual.

Spoiler for those who haven't played any of the 3d GTA games:
[spoiler:8033ef7695]what connection do you see between GTA IV and the older GTA's except for a few city names and of course Lazlo? or did i miss anything in the game?
In vice city and san andreas you could see a lot of characters return. Maria, Catalina, Salvatore Leone, Paul and etc.[/spoiler:8033ef7695]

VC and SA had that connection. And? Love went from III to VC, but otherwise? How many characters do you think were carried over from I or II? And the setting? VC and SA are different cities, it's the numbered games (except II) that share a city.

Seriously, you want to put GTA IV apart from the rest because it doesn't have those easter egg appearances?

I didn't try to put it apart from the rest, :( i was just trying to tell him he can start playing with GTA IV, GTA IV is a great game, why do you hurt my feelings like this :(

buuuuaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh *starts crying*

Ahhh, Lazlo! He has a radio show IRl and he's actually pretty important in the sound design for the game. Pretty cool guy, eh hosts radio and doesn't afraid of anything.

It's been confirmed by Rockstar that all of the previous GTA protagonists are dead by the time GTA IV takes place.

There's actually a memorial wall in Bohan for them.

Seriously, everyone? That's a lot of people to all die in a fairly short timespan...though I guess there's - what - 15 years between IV and SA/III?

Really? That's too bad. Do you have a link for that?

I did like GTAIII's Claude, the mute maniac, and it was fun seeing him with Catalina in San Andreas.

15 years between IV and SA/III?

From what I remember, both III and IV are set in the time as their RL release year. So 2001 / 2008 respectively I guess.

GTA III was set in 2001.
GTA VC was set in 1986.
GTA SA was set in 1992.
GTA IV was set in 2008.

Wha-hey, there's 9 years between Claude & Catalina leaving SA and Catalina betraying Claude?

Seriously, that doesn't make any sense. Who the hell could stick with Catalina for 9 years?

He was a mute maniac, seems like a perfect match for her.

Or maybe they went their separate ways for a while after moving to Liberty allowing Catalina to meet her Colombian friend and then they wanted to rob that bank but they needed help so she calls up Claude and says like hey baby remember me let's go for one last big score for old time's sake what do you say....and there's the start of GTAIII...

...iono

Wait a second - are you telling me that Rosie, Torreno, Ron Paul and Truth don't make an appearance in GTA IV?

It's official now - GTA IV sucks!

Yup, the only person you will see(hear) is Lazlo. I was also disappointed at first. But the game is great. there are lots of memorable characters in the game.
