New Fallout 3 Expansion Preview at IGN

Morbus

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
It's basically a small text about the next DLC available for Bethesda's Fallout 3. Point Lookout is the name, and here's what IGN have to say, in a snip:
Point Lookout takes you to an as yet unexplored area of Maryland that didn't suffer the same kind of devastation that DC went through when the bombs fell. In fact, it appears to be a rather quaint beachfront community that has fallen into disrepair. (...)

In fact, that's something that Bethesda is specifically going for, attempting to create an H.P. Lovecraft vibe with the entire pack. Point Lookout is stepped in thick fog, with a number of new effects for the environment, including new water, sky and tree textures to make Point Lookout look a bit more off kilter. Even stranger, however, are the "monsters" that you'll face. The newest ones are the Hillfolk, mutated people that seem completely ripped from "The Hills Have Eyes." There were a number of these creatures that silently attacked us with different implements, such as shovels, axes and even double barreled shotguns. As rustic and simplistic as these weapons might seem, you shouldn't discount them on looks alone. These items are extremely powerful, particularly if you repair these items into better condition.
More at:

Powerfull enough to even crush trough your powerarmor I am sure ... yay for shovels and axes that punch trough armor!

To me it feels as if these DLC are allowing Bethesda to create "new" games in the expansions to Fallout 3 without actually creating a new game. This latest one, Point Lookout looks and feels like a completely different game (even from their concept of Fallout) they wanted to create but just put together with the Fallout engine and name on it.

This stuff is inconsistent even with Fallout 3.

Seriously.

We got a half-baked fallout sequel with F3.
We got a pseudo military 'FPS' with OA.
We got the out-of-the-box PA stuff with TP.
We got a half-baked game catched in the pan with BS.
We will get a lovecraft/the hills have eyes ripoff with PL.

What about that alien DLC? What will it ripoff? Aliens? Star Wars? System Shock?

/rant off

Prey?

I'm not to excited about aliens, heck, I made several characters and never even found the crashed ship. The swamp stuff appeals to me so long as they keep it sci-fi and not go into outright supernatural territory.

Well, I don't know, this new DLC just screams "we're too busy to even put any kind of effort into this, so we'll shamelessly rip off Oblivion without even adding new textures this time". Seriously, the thing looks like Elder Scrolls or Dungeon Siege, if you ask me.

wow even IGN can see that they are blatantly ripping off ideas from other games and movies and shoehorning them into Fallout 3 as DLC.

I can't wait to fight El Gigante in the misty swamps of Maryland, and maybe we'll get to do that cool boat and harpoon vs giant lake monster boss fight from RE4 too!!

Mars Attack?
Indeed! Together with the music of Slim Whitman in your Pip-Boy ...

Imagine the game ...

But I have a sinking feeling, that one of the new weapons featured might be scoped crossbow.

Then we would be able to close a dozen mod request threads.

That's not the main problem.
How's one to expect to survive against those weapons, with nothing but a "Vengeance", or a FatMan? :o

Kinda remind me a game that was quite elaborated at the time (long time, actually).

Maybe some of the gamers here remember the "Redneck Rampage".
Doom style, better graphics, improved playability....but not Doom!

Crni Vuk they might go with the angel that some owned illegal high powered weapons for "hunting".
Might be from Gauss to pulse weapons who knows.

Even more owerpored then it is already now? Why dont they make for a change something that really might be good. Like a usefull powerarmor (which actualy acts like a REAL powerarmor ...) or a sniper that is not degrading after 10 shoots to dust. I was not able to stand the game for 10min without mods that corrected this situation cause I was so bored from keeping 12123 pistols, plasma rifles and snipers in my invetory for repairing ... if you could at least with a workbench, enough skills (maybe even a special perk!) and spare parts/junk repair your equipment, but nooo you always need a exact copy of the said item. Awesome. Strange enough though that a merchant can do it even when he has not the right equipment.

I dont see anyway a point in it to play the DLCs when you have already at the end (or if you play with half a brain already in the midle) of the game a character that cant be touched by almost anything. Not that It was hard to get such a character in either F1 or F2, but definetly not with the first times I played the game (and not before I have read trough a few very informative websites letz face it if you dont know about the Avanced Power armor in F2 you will not get it the first time early in the game by accident!).

All this DLCs might be nice looking (somewhat ..) and I even appreciate the idea to move in a new direction with some of it, even when it completely does not fitt the Fallout setting after all, but what I hate most is that gameplay whise all this stuff moves in the direction of a shooter that is only wearing a "I'm a RPG! For real!" shirt. I am really frightened about the imagination what kind of conclusion Todd and his team will draw out of all this DLCs for the case they are selling like hotcakes (which they say so). What it will mean for the gameplay of Fallout 4 (5?!) in all seriousness now. I think Redneck rampage as Fallout 4 would really not be that far away ...

Why are they previewing a game that has already been released? Morrowind came out in 2002.

Well the more towards Morrowind, and less towards Oblivion the better (imo).

As much flack as Oblivion gets, the single game stopping killer (beyond the animation, ai, and npc chatter) for me personally, was the level scaling. I know f3 has it, but its dialed back a bit (with set scaling "ranges" in an area, that become static, not ALL GAME CONTENT = CHARLVL, like oblivion did...ugh).

In fact id just rather have Morrowind with a new coat of paint (google "Morrowind2009"). Than another Oblivion, To me Fallout 3 skews a bit more towards Morrowind.

Referrering to Duke Nukem 3D would be more accurate.

Level scaling ? Now the they do not make everything always level up completely with you like in Oblivion, in Fallout 3 you can become always the super hero no matter what. Thats a huge improvement ... if youre a Munchkin (role-playing games)

In gaming, a Munchkin is a player who plays what is intended to be a non-competitive game (usually a role-playing game) in an aggressively competitive manner. A munchkin seeks within the context of the game to amass the greatest power, score the most "kills," and grab the most loot, no matter how deleterious their actions are to role-playing, the storyline, fairness, logic, or the other players' fun. The term is used almost exclusively as a pejorative and frequently is used in reference to powergamers and to immature players in general.
