New poll in Iraq

I was just curious as to how the lefties on this board can discredit this article, as it is, you know, done by The Daily Worker II: This Time in Sheep's Cloathing.

Already read that in the papers.

Discredit this article?

Wait a second...I may be left-from-the-centre, but that doesn't mean I try to bend reality to my will. What is, is. The Iraqi people are happier to be free from Saddam Hussein, who wouldn't be? If you think my problem at any point with the war was "it will be bad for the Iraqi people", then you haven't been listening

In fact, do we have any extreme left-wing crazies here?

But now that we're firing articles at one another, what do you think of this:

52% of Turks have an unfavorable view of Christians? Weird. And doubtful, but mostly weird.

Doubtful? As far as I know, Pew's pretty reliable.

Not that that was the point

Well the most important thing is the Iraq data, and that is the exact opposite of what everyone everywhere was saying.

I was expecting you to say that, so:

oh rly?

Who here didn't feel from day one that the Iraqi people would be better off without Saddam? The problem I have is that I don't think it is worth lives to free them from his tyranny. Iraq was not invaded to free its people, it was invaded to remove the threat of WMD and to combat terrorism. Freedom for the average Iraqi was just a by-product of other goals that, had they been genuine, I would have supported.

But as has become clear neither of those main goals turned out to be genuine. Where are the WMD's? Destroyed years ago. Where are the terrorists? They weren't there before, but probably are there now.

I take consolation that the Iraqi people are better off now, but that does not compensate for the instability and ill will the invasion generated across the globe. I don't think that the world is much better off now than it was last year at this time. The only possible bright spot in this whole issue is Libya, which seems to have been prompted to come clean after the US demonstrated its willingness to act.

In closing, of course the Iraqi people are better off. But is the world better off too? I don't think so.

I watched a doco recently, where they interviewed random people in Iraq, and I thought it was interesting that even though they want the Americans to leave, they say they would be incapable of rebuilding infrastructure without 'security'.

One enterpreneur is counting on them staying because he was investing in an internet cafe to cater for a nearby US base. If someone will risk their savings on the fact that they will stay, it suggests that the people are not yet confident enough to stand on their own two feet.

The US presence has had many positive effects but is still an occupation.

Black or white

right or wrong

Left or right

Liberal or conservative...

Theres no middle ground for some, ok to talk about your article.

Seventy per cent of people said that things were going well or quite well in their lives, while only 29% felt things were bad.

And 56% said that things were better now than they were before the war.

Now the first statement is universal, the average "happiness" in western europe is around 80% with 20 % or so claiming they are unhappy with their lives.

The second one tht 56% belive things are better now than before, fine i not disputing that. But that only just over half of those questioned, meaning 44% think things where better before the war. Its all in the wording.

By the way i was pro war, a centrist and tired of people posting links instead of actual arguments.
