New Reno

Vigil

First time out of the vault
Hello guys,

I just took my first few tentative steps in New Reno and I immediately had a question.

Is there a lot a moral character can do in or with this city? I feel like 90 percent of any of the quests I can get here will net me bad karma, or can be considered "immoral", which is something I am trying to avoid for RP purposes.

Thanks in advance.

I guess the Wrights are the best choice for a „good“ character.
You can do some good, especially for them, but yeah, New Reno is kind of a scummy town.

There is so much good karma to be gained killing raiders in the eastern part of the map (between Vault City and Broken Hills) that there's no reason to not do all quest in Reno, except for roleplay reason of course. Plus, the encounters give a ton of loot and decent XP.

Seriously, you'll have a hard time finding where to put all those guns, no merchant has enough money to pay for them all at once, and after you trade some of it for top equips in San Fran it'll take MONTHS to empty the car trunk. Unless you simply leave the loot, which is heresy.

I usually end the game with 99.999.999+ gold in each NPC plus myself and my desk in the Chop Shop.

I'll check out the wrights, thanks Hass.

Also yeah, it's mostly RP reasons Makenshi. I usually just try to avoid doing any sort of bad things when I play a "moral" character.

Thanks for the answers guys. I was wondering, I remember someone talking about how they were shipping jet to Redding. Is there a way to stop this? Also is there a way to help the NCR take over different places or not.

Question: do you consider doing ANY job for the families as a bad thing, even if it's just a deliver (Mordino pack to the stables) or colect (Salvatore's protection tax from Renesco)?

What I mean is, maybe a task isn't necessarily bad (as in, spreading pain, death, fear and chaos in the wastes) just because the game gives bad karma when doing it. Notice the emphasis in the word necessarily, because most actions to which the game gives bad karma are indeed bad actions.

But man, 1000 caps just to deliver a briefcase to the stables is not a bad thing.

Collecting the money Renesco (a scumbag btw) own to Salvatore MAY be bad, as he doesn't really have a choice - it is extortion, after all -, but the dude is so deep into sin that one can say "Fuck Renesco, he will be charged anyway, so it better be me to collect and and not someone else, as least i won't hurt him bad... plus I get something from that crapola hehehe".

Not necessarily. As a moral character I can't see anything that isn't you know, causing someone misery who didn't earn, to be really bad. But then if the game gives me negative karma I have to avoid it anyway. Which kind of sucks. I guess the only thing I'm doing is killing Bishop, destroying the jet plant, and then leaving.

Being a porn star would be considered immoral by some characters. You might try RPing a vigilante since so many of the New Reno quests could be considered 'immoral.' The wright family is one that my good character, Arianna, joined. However, even they are technically a mafia family, and therefore, by definition, they are criminals. They're just...lesser criminals.

By vigilante, I mean you could go through and kill Renesco for selling drugs to anyone (even children if they wanted it). He's even worse than Jules or Jagged Jimmy J. You might also assassinate the heads of the mafia families, as that could be considered vigilanti-ism.

NOTE: Since this is your first time in New Reno (therefore, I assume, your first playthrough), I would caution you **heavily** against doing the vigilanti thing, however...you won't be able to gamble at the casino's as you will become an enemy of each family--unless you manage to assassinate the mafia Don's without making it clear who the culprit is. I'll avoid spoilers, but I will say that you can find ways to kill every mafia families Don without making yourself an enemy. I'll leave it to you to figure out how.

The boxing matches were awesome. I must say, I've killed the last guy by dealing him a critical hit worth 1 hitpoint only.

Besides the tried-and-true methods that can be employed to kill ANY random NPC, what methods were available to use on Wright? Not like I'd be out to kill him anyhow, but I know the other 3 had specific scripts you could use that resulted in genuine assassinations, but I can't recall any for Wright...

Boxing WAS pretty awesome. Once I got the hang of knocking everyone out with shots to the junk (which TECHNICALLY should be against the rules...) those matches became a study in hilarity. Just "smack, smack, smack, shot to the junk, down he goes!" XD

But yeah, if in RPing a "moral" character you're avoiding ANY shot of negative karma, then there's quite literally a mere handful of things you can do, most of which are just working for the Wrights.

Which is VERY funny to do, I might add. Nothing like giving a loaded pistol to an 8 year old and telling him to show daddy XD

I ended up playing a Vigilante Route, but didn't really do it silently. Mostly just ended up wiping out the casinos and bars. The Bishop one had to be the most entertaining I suppose. After making love to his wife we fought. Power Armor makes things a little difficult for my opponents.

Not really related to this but I ended up running into a problem later in San Fran.

I can't seem to harden my power armor because I killed the Huboligsts, though as far as I am aware the guy who does it is not suppose to care all that much and be willing to do it for you.

Killing all of New Reno's Bosses results in absolute missery for the settlement.

I worked with the Wrights because none of their missions gave me negative karma and they seemed alright to me.
