New Witcher 3 Trailer

Got Witcher 1 for free. Played 2. Really Like 2.

Should I bother playing 1?

If you have 30-50 hours to spare, yes, it's really good. I liked it more than the sequel, but both are great. I think a lot of 3 won't make sense without 1, at least towards the end of 1.

That's cool.

Anything I should know when I start it up? I ask because I've never seen anyone talk about Witcher 1....ever.

I tried replaying it recently. I couldn't get over the slow pace in uninteresting locales with such a terrible combat system. I liked the game the first time around but I skipped to the sequal immediately.

And now I'm having the same problems with the second one. The combat really isn't much better.

maybe you will like the third game then ...

A new trailer? Good, bad, kickass? You decide!

it looks and feels very promising, still one more year to go. Is it just me or does it seem like the Witcher team is a huge fan of LotR and Game of Thrones? Pretty much impossible to miss some of the references in their games - Balins map? Prince Stennis? Voice Actor of Tywin Lannister the Nilfgardian Emperor? He has a great voice after all!

How did you put up with skyrim?

And those were the highpoints of the game for me (each and every one ~especially the combat); and I consider Witcher (1) among my top favorite [best] RPG's of the last decade. :)

** And the sequel really pissed me off; having omitted and discarded several of its better features ~namely losing the triple camera system, losing the ability to actually use a potion from his bandolier when needed; and trading away the [Awe inspiring] combat for manual hack-n-slash.

The Witcher 2 combat mechanics can be sometimes very frustrating, particularly when its doing something that feels like "how did that happen?", like opponents with shields blocking your attacks while they face you with their backs or while they're kneeling from exhaustion. But I always think they tried here to give it a sense or realism, fighting opponents with shields is one of the most difficult situations afterall. But at the same time the combat can be also very rewarding once you took your time to analyse the combat behaviour of your foes, and there really are not that many. I almost lost my mind the first time I fought a Spider-Queen as it simply killed me over and over again, the "normal" spiders have been already difficult enough. But once I learned her attack patters though it changed from "impossible" to "a challange", and I like the fact that even later in the game such opponents could pose a threat because new armors didnt became so overpowered that you could simply shrug off the heavy blows, it just allowed you to do more mistakes in combat. As far as the fighting goes you have to keep 2 things in mind, which is a big difference to other games that have similar combat mechanics.
1. You are not invincible while performing "finishing moves". A sorcer throwing a fireball? Soldiers and Monsters hacking at your back? You might end up dead if you finish someone in the midle of a group, which gives it a sense of tactic in my opinion.
And 2. You are not invinble while dodging.

There is also a free mod called combat rebalanced, made by the person who was responsible for the combat mechanics in Witcher 2. It seems they fixed the biggest issue here, the constant need for rolling around. Geralds now performing rather a pirouette, and it improved the already great animations.

Like I said, the combat mechanics are very frustrating, but once you took your time get in to it, its pretty decent. Better then Witcher 1? No clue. That is a matter of taste in my opinion. They have different principles in mind. Because the combat in Witcher 2 depends a lot more on your own skill and obersvation, while the Witcher 1 was closer to the skills you chose.

Skyrims hardly a game with a very deep combat mechanic.

Well it has a better combat system than the Witcher 1, but if I'd try replaying it now i'd be bored by that too.
