Nifty Fallout reference in Bioshock

A little bird pointed out to us that during the fairly interesting though overly long developer presentation of Bioshock, there's a funny little gem in the 10th minute:

Link: Bioshock investor presentation on Youtube

When I clicked the link I got a msg saying, "The url contained a malformed video id."

*shrug*

Has it been confirmed as a deliberate reference? I wouldn't have assumed so.

euhm, Kharn, i already pointed this out in the first thread about the first Bioshock vid (ever) was posted?

That is of no use to me.

Video does seem broken, no idea why.

i'm not following what you're trying to say.

i'm saying i (and others) have already posted about the toiletboy (because that's his use here) in the original thread here when the first ingame bioshock vid was posted. hence i dont understand the need to point it out again (so longer after it was first noticed).

Someone also pointed out who the Fallout lead designer was about half a year before DaC and NMA posted about it.

I'm sorry I missed your earlier reference to this fact (I do not read every post on this forum, sadly), but it's never been newsposted on before, hence is "news"-worthy. The forum is not the frontpage, the fact that it was mentioned somewhere here does not change the fact that most of our readers don't know about it.

Though I'm annoyed that the vid is broken.

hey, thats not a bad idea. I'll make up some new signs for on all the toilet doors at work :)

It's as good as bought ;)

Not only because the developers seem to be fallout fans, but also because what I've heard so far looks like an interesting game.

I fail to see what all the fuzz is about.
It looks a little like our beloved Vault Boy, but it ain't exactly him, now is it?

On a sidenote: today, some FO fans have mailed me to report what they call "various similarities" between Vault Boy and the old geezer who is the Monopoly mascotte! This should definitely be posted on the front page.

If someone dares to say that he already pointed this out long ago, then sorry, but that is of no use to me, kiddo.

I dont think that is the vault boy. It doesnt look like him. I can bet my money on it.

the head is too big, the nose and the smile are not depicted as in fallout boy

the only thing that resembles are the legs, but then again that is a wide spread stylization.

of course it's not the same...

if not, Herve would probably be in court already to make a fast buck.

no, it's inspired upon the VaultBoy, or at least has the same roots as the VB. knowing the devs of Bioshock, it really isn't hard to believe.

All these non-fallout-but-could-be-referenced-to-fallout-things do is creating a bad atmosphere at nma. I bet that was the initial intention of putting that sign there

I agree.. you must be blind if you dont think thats the bault boy.. and thats its a reference to fallout. what else could it be?

what else ? perhaps rference to 50's style, some retro stilisation to add to the mood ... just like vault boy in fallout ;)

For some reason I highly doubt that.

I noticed the similarity between the Vault Boy and the Monopoly guy earlier this year and thought I had found something new. Then I did a search for Monopoly here and found a Boyarski quote where he freely admits to ripping the Monopoly cards and character idea.

I also saw something similar in a coin-op game from the 80's (or early 90's) called Speed Rumbler. Look it up on the net if you want to see a manga vault boy that pre-dates Fallout. :)
