No really, no mandatory install on PS3

In spectacularly redundant news, Joystiq for some reason felt it necessary to recheck the mandatory install news.<blockquote>"The answer to that is no, there isn't," Bethesda marketing guru Pete Hines recently told Joystiq concerning Fallout 3 on the PS3. "That doesn't mean we don't use the hard drive, just that it does it in the background as opposed to a large, upfront install." As far as how much hard drive space the game will require, the exec wouldn't say exactly. Hines did mention that the RPG will require "a similar amount" of HD space as Oblivion, making us expect to fill up the PS3's juicy interior with about 4-5 gigs of atom-splitting data when the game ships this fall.</blockquote>Link: Fallout 3 just says no to mandatory install on PS3.

AFAIK, Bethesda's primary development platform is the Xbox 360, which still uses DVDs for their game content, so 4-5 GB is a full installation. :P

Hey, I hooked up a printer to my PS3 for a reason!

I can't remember what the reason is at this moment, but I'm sure it's important because I can now print stuff from the bathroom!

Not owning a console, can anyone tell me why anyone would care about having to install a game?

I think it has something to do with cutting back on the download time.

Don't worry, it's just Furioso, you'll get used to him. Friendo.

To clarify.

The PS3 is not in my bathroom.

What I'm saying is that using my wireless keyboard and mouse, I can print stuff using my PS3 even when I'm sitting on the john.

It's not exactly life-changing, but it is funny.

Well, some PS3 games install a cache of data onto the system's hard drive. It cuts back load times slightly and also helps with the whole stability issue.

On the flip side, some people are angry over the fact that more and more PS3 games are requiring 4-5gb installs. I imagine those folks bought the 20gb model and are quickly running out of hard drive space. At least the PS3 is easily upgradeable, though.

Yeah, took me twenty minutes with a screwdriver and now my PS3 has a 120 GB hard drive. Even if I didn't upgrade the drive, there's nothing to stop you from deleting the installed stuff when you're done with it and freeing up that space.

Yeah, but people are lazy and complaining is easier than trying to actually fix the problem themselves.

20gb

Lol, i never knew consoles where so "small" in the bedroom department, now it makes sense.
If you think that's bad, the Wii has 512mb of onboard flash memory and no hard drive support, only SD card support, which is capped at 4gb.
